Slush puppies week 2021 Prompt: Dance
Got unexpectedly busy so only got a drabble for today. Longer fics will continue tomorrow.
The night air greets Marrow as he opens the balcony door. For anyone other than a native Atlesian, it would be uncomfortably chilly, but for him it feels like a blessing after a long and stuffy meeting.
Weiss is watching the city below, her arms crossed over the railing. Her long, white hair is loose, falling softly over her shoulders instead of the usual braid. Marrow watches as the colours of the northern lights softly change her hair colour each passing moment, the colours an endless dance of green, blue and purple.
He walks over to her, his footsteps softened by the thin layer of snow on the floor. She doesn’t react, as he leans over the railing, mirroring her posture. They stand there for a while in a comfortable silence, neither acknowledging the other just yet. He takes in the sight of Atlas below them. The city’s cold blue lights a stark contrast to the soft oranges and browns of his home in Mantle.
Eventually, Weiss turns towards him and extends her hand to him. He takes it in his own, his dark skin contrasting perfectly with her ivory, and presses a gentle kiss onto her palm. He can feel her smile. Marrow straightens up again, her hand still in his. She has never looked more beautiful in his eyes. She steps closer and drapes her free hand over his shoulder. He drops his own to her waist.
Dancing has become something of a tradition between them. It helps him relax, and he knows Weiss has always enjoyed dancing. They start slow, softly swaying to imaginary music. She lets him lead, step forward, step backwards, another forward... He twirls her around and a peal of laughter escapes her lips. Their pace quickens until it feels like they’re flying over the floor.
They continue dancing for a while, both enjoying the activity and each other’s presence. Only the moon and the northern lights bear witness to their dance. No one else even knows they’re here. Far beneath them, Atlas is bustling, tiny cars filled with tiny people hurrying home to their loved ones. But they’re insignificant to their story. For Weiss and Marrow, time might as well be standing still.
They come to a sudden stop, both breathing slightly harder from their waltz, small clouds form from the hot air escaping their lungs. He lifts his hand from her waist and frees the other one from her hand, Weiss looks at him questioningly, but the look disappears quickly as he places his hands on her cheeks, cradling her face and leans closer. Her eyes meet his, light blue on teal. Their breaths mingle in the short distance between their lips, each cloud of her breath feels like a gentle kiss on his face. Her eyes flutter closed. Everything is perfect in this moment. Weiss leans in to close the distance...
