That last, eighth year your thoughts come and go in a shell-shocked haze, but the slit is the one that stays the longest. 

The slit itself is a small thing. One jagged edged cut placed neatly in the bottom left corner of the Runespoor hunting tapestry, fraying threads curling ever so slightly. You don’t remember how it looked before the cut -the tapestry corridor’s charm had worn off sometime around the start of your second year- but you’re sure it must have been alive with tiny woven wizards rushing excitedly in search of their quarry. 

You pass it on your way to Transfiguration and some heavy, unidentifiable emotion settles in your chest, maybe something a little too close to guilt that makes you slow your pace every time.  

Of all the infractions against Hogwarts(and her children) committed in the Battle, it’s one of the smallest. A stray diffindo, maybe, from one of your fellow students. You’re not an expert but it looks repairable. Nothing to concern yourself about, especially not with all the worse things that have happened.

You still linger.
