“Girls, don’t run! Girls!”
Upon the arrival of Dr. James Potter to the small Polish city, the habitants had raised havoc in trying to meet the the young lad who like them created chaos in being one of the youngest doctors now in days. At sixteen he had helped a war solider who was rushed back to the English empire. Being told the wound was too grave, the man was given little hope of saving his limb. Once being notified of such, Dr. James Fleamont Potter had taken the next fairy to the certain location. Wherever he resided, James had worked up on a concoction that allowed for temporary anesthesia. Working his craft at arriving in the location he had saved the man’s limp from amputation and infection— causing for his name to be spread through the country and eventually the continent.
The girls from Elizabethan Academy had heard of his presence at the school. With teachers whispering about his presentation and nurses giggling amongst themselves that he, a prestigious man was going to help and teach them how to use new medicine; the girls found it upon themselves to be the first ones at the auditorium if they wanted a great view of the tall handsome man (or at least that’s what they were told.)
“[y/n] come on, leave the book. It’ll be just an hour.” Lady Nowak was the daughter of Sir Nowak, a well known accountant that due to his great character and personality was allowed into the world of higher class and held many options of spouse for both his daughters and sons. Given to her father’s reputation, Adeline or Nini held herself way too high, looking down on anyone she cared little for or didn’t find suitable.
[y/n] contrary to her close friend came from a family of aristocrats. Her grandfather being a well known one with such title, leaving his land, money, and businesses in the name of his children. Her father being the oldest had obtained two of each of those things mentioned, leaving for his own children enough for them and following generations. That is due to only having a son and two young girls, [y/n] the last one.
“Nini, I’m in the least interested in medicine.” She’d try to protest against her friend who kept on pulling on her sleeve. “It’s fine! Just go with me!” Nini herself didn’t care for medicine nor her studies, but her father had forced her to at least study a subject of her choice. The main reason as to why she was going, was obviously the will to look at the man they all claimed to be as handsome as Adonis, if not— then his competition.
Huffing with annoyance, the blonde strutted closer to her house guest. “Come before I tell father you leave bed after bedtime just to stay in the attic.” Stupid child, that was an empty threat [y/n] had allowed Nini to obtain just for the fun of it. If Nini was to tell on [y/n] her father would simply laugh it off, knowing [y/n] did so for not only her amusement but study choice. “I guess if that’s the case, then I must go,” [y/n] sarcastically sighed, closing the book she had her nose buried deep in. See, Adeline herself wasn’t that bright and if given some sort of extortion, she wouldn’t question its validity. She would simply smile it off in mischief and agree to use it against anyone. Even if she made a complete fool of herself.
Maybe, just maybe it was curiosity to see if this man was just as beautiful and smart as many gave out to say. So as both girls walked to the auditorium with small talk (Nini trying to imagine how handsome he was), both girls entered through the large wooden doors that led them to the fifth box. Like every other spot, the chairs there had become taken resulting in them to stand on the sidelines just to barely see the young brunette that had started his presentation not that long ago.
“Even if you’re told that professional medicine must not be for you, remember that if you tell y-“ That’s all [y/n] could care to listen to. Sure she hadn’t looked at him nor given him the chance to speak of his wisdom, but when [y/n] is dragged to places against her will when she could’ve perfectly spent it in the comfort of the Nowak’s garden reading Brontë novels, then there resides a problem.
Nevertheless whilst [y/n] found herself inattentive, James felt his intestines grumble and poke at his sides, eating away the layers of meat, fat, and flesh to simply escape their misery of nervousness. James himself was never a shy man. He could speak through his elbows if possible, but when the main reason as to why an auditorium is full of young women just to see his pretty face but not about his work, then what was the point of trying to pour his heart out if few to none where listening.
James knew if he suggested the idea of having them ask questions, it would result in many inappropriate starter ups that he had no energy to answer after his long ship ride to the city. With a sigh, he continued his talk until the hour he had came to an end.
Dreadful, really. [y/n] herself had perhaps finished a good amount of pages from her book by the time he was done talking and heard the rowdy girls unnecessarily applauding for his hour long babble. With a soft smile that though couldn’t express his frustration, he looked up the boxes just to see more girls look at him with heart-shaped eyes— like the ones in drawings made in the newspaper to advertise fake love potions.
Yet despite having all eyes on him, he found ones that didn’t even bother to flicker to see what all the commotion was about. They scanned the worn out yellow pages of the wool hardcover and ragged edges of the pages held by soft looking hands. Her face seeming unbothered by anything and everyone, and the curls at her front falling softly against her forehead. “Thank you, please…” As he continued mentioning his gratitude, from the corner of his eye- he could still make out the uniform clad figure that despite demonstrating her overly noticeable border, remained in the auditorium waiting for it all to be finished.
“Do any of you girls have any questions?” The way his chest collapsed at the sound of a mousey voice behind him, grabbing his shoulder to keep him in place and her wretched breath fanning against the nape of his neck, traveling to his nostrils. James held his breath as he turned to look at the older woman standing to his side as of now. [y/n] like him hated that comment, head aching and a harsh anger in her chest wanting to leave but knowing she couldn’t leave campus without Nini.
It didn’t take long for the students to raise their hands and demand his attention. Just by looking at them he released a groan not audible at all due to the loud chatter. “A few could do…” He’d softly comment, fingers interlocking behind his back as he walked back and forth answering the questions of those he chose only to be annoyed remembering how he had in depth talked about said topic. Not only that but most of the questions were out of context or simply made no sense, sure he was extremely thankful to those handful who actually listened for the sake of medicine and to those: he would remember.
The amount of hands didn’t seem to decrease and [y/n’s] patience itself was running thin, even though she paid very little to no attention, there was something she had been thinking about for a couple of weeks due to the news of how this ‘cure’ was massively increasing in the states. It seemed to even be a great new fascination in Europe itself in order to treat yellow fever patients. So as her gaze shifted towards those behind her and those with their hand up, [y/n] sighed softly before taking the opportunity to raise her own.
Many of the girls around her had their hand up in hopes of having answers to their nonsensical questions. Sure they’d scowl at her annoyed that one more would add themselves to the queue but what annoyed them most was how she had not paid any attention to his talk and the idea of letting him pick this ‘snob’ of a girl (the consequences of not wanting anything to get between your studies) would simply make their blood boil.
As always, what’s more satisfying than watching other suffer from anger?
James had grown extremely tired of the same repeated questions. The ones you write down in essays when you’re trying to both sound smart and make your paper lengthy. He considered cutting them off halfway if he begun to recognize the question or know the answer has been said before, so with another sigh as he looked up to see the same neutral expression as before have their hand raised, a smile crept upon his pink lips, teeth slightly showing.
“Yes, do you have a question, uh ma’am with the book in hand?” James’ cheeks begun to burn up hating how excited he had become with just the idea to hear your voice. Perhaps it was a generalized guess, but James believed you would be smart about your question and not ask how the anesthesia worked or how to sew up deep wounds. So as everyone in [y/n’s] box noticed no one but her had a book at hand, low groans and glares were directed her way. (Not like she cared either, she could tell he was starving for something new.)
Nodding as she held the book with both hands now, [y/n] opened her mouth ready for words to spew out- trying to ignore the hundredths of eyes laid on her. “Through the decade the practice of bloodletting has increased spreading through the European nation. Do you like many other doctors believe it's beneficial to those who are ill or like the other half, believe it’s not an ideal practice?” It was a simple opinion based question nothing as intricate but rather more different from the ones he’s been getting.
James didn’t have to smile with his lips to demonstrate how satisfied he was with that question, his gleaming eyes were enough to show all his emotions. “What a great question! Ah… yes great indeed. Given that this is opinion based, personally I believe it’s not efficient nor sanitary. There runs a high risk of excess of blood loss that can result to death and if utilizing unsterilized tools then infection is a major result. Splendid! What’s your name, dear?” Raising an eyebrow, [y/n] tilted her head slightly, staring him down further more. “[y/n], sir. [y/n] [y/l/n].” It wasn’t harsh nor soft, neutral as always. “I-I’d like to add that the tools utilized aren’t always the ones risking infection. Proper bandaging, clean up, and sanitary conditions of the ones performing it can also lead to the infections to occur. If leeches are being used, one has to make sure they’ve been grown in hospital facilities since brith and not simply swamp water leeches.” James’ eyes glimmered in the gas produced light, enamored by this girl’s knowledge and uncaring reactions to his own.
“Quite impressive, miss [y/l/n]. Is it possible you’re pursuing a career in medicine?” Her low chuckle and confident shake of head gave him enough, but even so she spoke. “Oh no, I’m far from interested in medicine. I couldn’t bare being exposed to diseases or let alone pestering patients claiming a self given illness… sorry, doctor— but my care for medicine is none existent.” Granting him one last glance, [y/n] collected her book once again reading where she had left off, leaving a concentrated James looking up at her, fingers rubbing at his chin as he tried to study her, but what could he possibly study when all he could think about was how interesting she was.
Clearing his throat and tearing his gaze from her, James smiled politely at the girls who had become silent throughout their minutes of conversation, intrigued by what know-it-all [y/n] shot his way. “I’d like to leave it off with that great question, I’m truly sorry to those who didn’t get to receive an answer, but I’d like to soak in such great thoughts.” He was obviously trying to gain [y/n’s] attention through the jealous glares of her peers. It was nothing she couldn’t answer with a roll of eyes as she kept her focus on the novel.
“Girls, please make sure to walk out safe- Girls! Girls be careful going down the stairs, please!” Poor, professors being ignored and the majority of girls made their way out of the building just to go back home. Adeline and [y/n] themselves waited until the box was cleared up so hoards of girls wouldn’t get hurt. The chatter of other girls coming to no importance to the [y/h/c] headed girl who kept trying to finish reading her book, that is until she heard the girls start to squeal and a strong presence stand in front of her.
As her head remained low and her expression of frustration was only seen by the book in-front of her, [y/n] slowly moved her book just to see the pair of blue eyes who had stared at her earlier. “Oh, it’s you…” She wasn’t trying to hide her words. With a nod, [y/n] straightened up to properly greet him. “I saw you reading throughout the whole presentation and just wanted to know what it was that you’re reading…” James tried to keep his composure like her or at least seem uncaring like her.
[y/n] showed him the cover of the book with a smile, “Quite childish, pardon me.” It was the works of Cervantes ‘Don Quixote’ after her parents made her study in Spain for a good while, she had created a list of popular Spanish books— book she wasn’t really allowed to read until now. “Oh, no! It’s rather magnificent. I see you’re reading an original Spanish version… um, I’ve actually read a German version but it came nowhere near the original.” Nodding at his words, [y/n’s] annoyance had shifted to that pleasure knowing someone was willing to talk about literature with her. “I agree! The English version in itself is nothing compared to this… I do hope I caused no offense with the lack of attention, in fact I was dragged here.” [y/n’s] eyes shifted to Nini who like the few girls that remained, only glared at her,
“Ah, so you had no plans on coming?” James was teasing as he held a playful smirk on his face, not counting on you to be even more blunt. “Of course not. Now, if you excuse me I’d like to go home. I’m hungry after all.” James smirk didn’t falter, a chuckle left his lips when nodding and moving aside to let her pass. Watching her every move from pulling Nini’s hand to walking out of the box.
How lovely to never know what she’ll respond with.
It wasn’t a long walk until both girls had arrived home, causing for Adeline to slap [y/n’s]arm and pout at the girl whilst making her way upstairs. “How is it fair that you who didn’t care at all for him not only got a questioned answer but made him go all the way up to the box just have a conversation that you cut short? It’s honestly not fair!” There was no way [y/n] was phased by her stupid tantrums, in fact she tried hiding the smile that resided behind her book and if it wasn’t become Mrs. Nowak came into the picture, she would’ve silently laughed it off.
“What’s wrong with her now?” Her mother questioned, untying the apron she ported demonstrating she was making dinner. “Please ask her during dinner.” Mrs. Nowak shook her head knowing [y/n] loved seeing Adeline get riled up over dumb things and this time, it was one of them (or so it was believed, it was simply the start).
As dinner had commenced and the chatter between the family continued, Mrs. Nowak remembered what had happened earlier when the girls arrived home. [y/n] who as always was reading her book on the table (almost done eating) and Nini who kept asking for things to her father; the older lady cleared her throat sitting up straight to look at her daughter. “Could you explain you earlier tantrum? Including that slap to [y/n’s] shoulder,” [y/n] tried to pay no attention but could feel her face muscle trying to form a smirk.
Adeline had an expression of feigned regret, that is until she slightly turned her head to see [y/n] fighting off her smirk. “It’s her fault! [y/n] didn’t even care for the presentation and Doctor Potter gave her all his attention! Attention that she even ignored.” Knowing well the other three were looking at her, [y/n] made sure her smirk never revealed itself. Placing her book down, the girl turned to a bratty Nini. “Maybe if you would’ve let me stay in the courtyard whilst you went to the presentation, then this wouldn’t have happened.” Shrugging and getting her book once again, Aleksy who enjoyed seeing Nini become angry, released a loud laugh just seeing how nonchalantly [y/n] responded to his sister’s acclamations.
“Adeline, please. Don’t make such big fuzz over a pretty boy. Doctor James in only here for a few months until the school year finishes. Don’t make him uncomfortable like the other girls already are.” Mr. Nowak himself wouldn’t want his daughter to be in the midst of rumors for being a pestering unwanted clingy girl. “It’s just not fair at all! [y/n] was extremely rude towards him and still he tried making conversation with him.” A pout resided on her thin lips and her cold arms crossed in front of her chest. “Is that so, [y/n]?” Mrs. Nowak turned to the girl smiling at the current adventure Don Quixote was having, ignoring the pesky buzzing coming from Nini’s mouth.
“Huh?” She’d question looking up with a soft smile, making Aleksy chuckle at her response. “Where you being rude to Doctor Potter?” Mrs. Nowak despite being strict with her children and trying to not be as harsh with [y/n], would always choose her children, so if something was bothering either of them concerting the young girl to her left, then of course she’d point fingers.
“Being blunt and honest about your thoughts on medicine and frustration on being dragged to something you’re now being attacked on, it’s rather not considered rude, Mrs. Nowak.” The older lady watched as [y/n] went back to her book, hating how every time something like this came, [y/n] was in no way caring for the thoughts of others. In reassurance, Mr. Nowak shot a glare to the young girl. “What have I said about honesty, [y/n]?”
“To not express it if it offends.”
“Well?”
“Forgive me but it was well obvious Doctor Potter felt no sense of offense. If he was then his facial expression would demonstrate it but his glimmering eyes were up for either a challenge or simply enjoyed the honesty to know I wouldn’t waste his time like he wasted mine.” Both Nini and her mother looked at each other before turning to the head of house who behind his glass of wine held a simple smile. Unlike his father, Aleksy blew a playful kiss her way to show how much he was enjoying these times.
Clearing his throat and pushing his chair back to symbolize the end of this dinner, Mr. Nowak coughed looking at them all. “A reminder that a welcoming ball for Doctor Potter will take place next Saturday. Start preparing for the night, and no [y/n]— you can’t stay home.” With a huff, she continued her reading.
The leading events to the ball were nothing but boring and routinely. If this ball was to change anything in this boring city, then hopefully it would be the entertainment within. So as both girls help each other with their hair in the coach, Nini idly talking of how wonderful it would be to be asked to dance.
Even if she wasn’t mentioning names, it was evident Nini was referring to Doctor Potter who became Aleksy’s medical school professor. At those news, Adeline kept on bothering and begging her brother to let her attend at least one class and be his assistant partner until he officially attained one, but knowing well what she was up to— Aleksy would decline her please and ask [y/n] just to bother his sister. Always received with a: “I don’t care.” From [y/n] who only wanted to be left alone whilst writing down her annotations.
“I’m sure you’ll get asked, Nini.” Smiling [y/n’s] way, the blonde looking straight forward as [y/n] fixed the pastel green gown that she had received not long ago. The sleeves of the dress puffing out and the train of it long not long enough to be stepped on. At least it wasn’t as uncomfortable like other dresses she’s worn so as long as she doesn’t find herself dancing, it’ll all be fine. Not like anyone was to ask her to dance.
At least that’s what she thought. Throughout the night [y/n] had politely decline everyone that asked to dance offering them a chat before pretending like she wanted to talk to someone important. That’s how the whole night went on, [y/n] avoiding everyone, some chasing after her, Nini dancing with those who asked but not satisfied knowing none of them were James. James that through the night of talking with aristocrats had kept an eye on her ever since she had arrived.
James had heard of how Lady [y/l/n] came to the city as a guest to the Nowak's whilst her father and mother administrated business they’d place in different countries— their most successful one in New England. Knowing so, he was aware that if her status was as high as claimed then, it’d be possible to see her everywhere he went. Righteously so, the moment she stepped foot through those wooden doors, his eyes never left hers and his blood only boiled when he saw anyone approach her. It was surprising how he came to be this way. Wanting to know everything over a young girl who cared very little for him or anyone around her.
It didn’t mean anything, so be it— if he had to chase after her for just a glance, then he will.
Seeing as she stood next to her blonde friend looking his way, James tried not to roll his eyes at the sight of her. “Excuse me for second…” He’d politely tell his companionship, striding towards [y/n] who kept looking at the dishes of food granted by the hosts. “Do you think their creme cheese shrimp is good?” [y/n] asked Nini who was jumping from excitement the moment she noticed James walk their direction. In moments when Nini was about to scold her for thinking of food, James had beat her to it. “Perhaps try the salmon crackers with creme cheese and caviar.” His husky voice made the [y/h/c] girl turn to look at him, having a piece of bread already in her mouth.
Adeline’s excitement began to falter seeing the young man smile towards her best friend’s way. [y/n] herself though was having a thrill, enjoying his persistence. “I don’t eat raw fish nor fish eggs.” Her voice soft as she took another bite of the bread in her hand. “Are you enjoying yourselves, ladies?” It would’ve been painfully rude to ignore Nini’s existence. “I will if I’m aloud to eat in peace.” [y/n] mumbled looking at the floor beneath her. Adeline nudged her friend making James chuckle lightly. “Lady [y/l/n] you’re so lucky I enjoy your persona! Would you mind giving me this dance?” His hand begun to stretch, a smile prominent on his plump lips, and his eyes bright enough as they stared into hers, believing he had finally gotten through her.
“What part of I want to eat in peace wasn’t clear, doctor?” His head tilted, she was even more blunt that their first encounter but even so his smile never changed. “I’m sure my friend here would love a dance with you. Isn’t that right, Nini?” Adeline didn’t even try to conceal her agreement, smiling at how his gaze turned to her, she failed to see his expression showing terror, but like the gentleman he’s to be, he took her hand in his— taking her to the dance floor in which they begun the ballad.
[y/n] had not only become annoyed by the guys that kept asking to dance even though she denied all of them, but by news she had received earlier that day. They weren’t entirely unpleasant— in fact she adored the idea, but what she didn’t appreciate was the way her parents just treated her like a rag doll and decided her whereabouts. “Don’t you think it was harsh?” Looking up from her sitting position, [y/n] stood up to greet her host. “Mr. Nowak…”
Chuckling he took a piece of bread from the table as well. “He’s only trying to be friendly [y/n].” Shrugging, she ate the last of her piece. “Even so, he’s getting in the middle of my feast and streak of rejection.” Looking towards his direction, [y/n] smiled seeing how miserable he looked whilst Nini talked his ear off. “Would you reject me if I ask for a dance?” Seeing his hand stretched out to her and a pout form on her lips, she shook her head. “I suppose I can’t deny you.” Taking his hand into hers, the two joined the dance floor, in sync with the others.
“[y/n], I adore my daughter but it’s convenient you’re the one who becomes closer to him.” As his hand rested on her hip and other held her hand, Mr. Nowak looked at the way Nini kept talking with the Doctor. “Why would you say so?” [y/n] questioned, the dance moving making her turn to see the unpleasant interaction. “I don’t want Adeline to have everything so easy without trying. We made the mistake of letting our children be spoiled but at least Aleksy is working hard to continue his studies and become a doctor of himself. Nini… Nini is just attending school until she can marry anyone who’d care for her. I just want her to continue an easy boring life— that’s what will happen if she tries to pursue Potter.
Laughing at his comment, [y/n] tilted her head looking at the man she danced with. “Are you setting me up for a well knit life, Mr. Nowak?” Her eyes comically closed as she laughed, her grip tightening a bit. “Is that so? I don’t think you want to do that.” Swallowing the lump in his throat, the accountant shook his head. “Of course not, dear. Both you and Potter would most definitely have an interesting life together. Do you really see him putting up with your snarky remarks all the time? Of course your smart mouth won’t even let him try and raise his voice at you. Don’t you think that’s exciting! Your life won’t be typical and arranged like everyone else’s in this room. Just look around, misery and hypocrisy. Don’t you think it’s tasty?”
That’s what drove her to Mr. Nowak, his mind was twisted by the desolation and despair. His advice always drove [y/n] to feel the rush of liberation, and his kindness kept sanity within her knowing that at least someone encouraged her strong stance and will to continue her own path. “Now do me a favor and go dance with him, dear.”
Bowing to each other as the dance was over, [y/n] strode to where Nini and James stood. The excitement and euphoria Nini was feeling became disgusting and obnoxious to [y/n], compared to James’ distress and frustration that she still kept him standing in the middle of the floor knowing well she was up for another dance.
“That was wonderful, Doctor! Where did you learn to dan—“ Nini had no chance in finishing her sentence as [y/n] stood beside her. Strong and determined, the girl only stared at him.
