Grace explaining sheepishly to Eridian linguists that the reason he uses different pronouns for Rocky than for the rest of the population is that he reflexively defaulted to assigning Rocky the same grammatical and social gender that he himself uses, in a way that has historical precedent but in modern English is considered somewhat chauvinistic and backward, and he's not proud of it but also the habit is pretty deeply ingrained now and unless Rocky objects it's probably easier to just keep on as he has been...

and immediately being informed lol. lmao. do not even worry about it. you have no idea what kind of buck wild grammatical constructs Rocky has invented for you. everyone else addresses you as foreigner/scholar. they're somehow managing to refer to you as their sibling, ward, and semidivine culture hero at the same time every time they talk about you.

WIP Wednesday

“You’re allowed…to be…angry…Ryland…” she whispers, voice ragged and words melting together at the edges.

“M’not angry,” I mumble, trying to force myself to believe it. Really, I want to punch a hole through the heart monitor for the headache it’s giving me. I want to burn this hellish hospital down with me in it. I want to rip the cancer right out of her blood and torture each one of those fucking cells killing her. “Don’t worry about me, Mom.”

Despite all of the pain and the drugs and the horrific speckles of bruising, she smiles at me. It’s not a happy smile– doesn’t quite reach her eyes the way it should. “That’s…my job…”

Her eyes slip shut, strength fading. I watch the monitor in fear. It spits out the same data it’s been reporting since we got here. I take my glasses off, quiet and slow as I set them on the table. I bow my head until her knuckles brush the bridge of my nose, hand still clasped in both of mine.

“Don’t leave me,” I beg her sleeping form. “I don’t– I’m scared– I-I can’t—” The tears pour out of me, a burning sting of anguish rising up to the surface until it’s the only thing that exists. 

I barely notice when the doctor walks in, expression carefully schooled in a practiced display of professionalism.

“Respectfully, you need to leave. Now.”

I can’t let this happen. I can’t lose him, too—not after everything that’s already been ripped from my grasp. If I fail now, I’ll probably be dead from the force long before it takes him. The last thing he’ll ever know is that I abandoned him, too. 

He’s lost so much already. 

My finger finds purchase under the nearest clasp, and I flip it up. My vision is tunneling, but I have to reach that second switch, have to pull the lever, have to get us out of the mess that I caused.

Alright phm people! Sickfics in space where grace gets a cold don't actually work!! Because there are no other humans up there to give him a cold! I'm not gonna shit on your parade because I'm just not gonna read the fics so it's not my business. I just want to bring up an interesting idea to you:

War of the world type situation, where the eridians are giving grace a disease his immune system has never even heard of before! So it's a race against the clock situation to try and find a way to fight back against the disease before Grace just dies horribly. If you nasty it can happen on erid and Rocky can have a "not again" style trauma response to Grace getting weaker and weaker.
