This is no time for games! We only have a few hours to rig up some kind of contraption and take down the electric deer fence before dinner. Thankfully Sam came through in the clutch and made a spool with old tomato stakes, pallet boards and a piece of rebar. Three acres of fence down with plenty of time left for dinner and football.

Don't worry. This German garlic is as hardy as it is delicious. Were it motile it would probably go sledding today. Also I probably should get mulching this weekend. Virginia has a way of lulling me into a false sense of security.

Only one thing can get these cabbages to the finish line. A daily heartfelt rendition of the A-Team theme song complete with spoken dialogue.

Garlic. Delicious. So easy to grow. It has 101 uses and is fun to clean, sort and separate with the family. I love garlic so much I am going to learn to play the piano this winter and write a song about it. It is my fervent wish that everyone we know try growing garlic at home. Not everyone has space to grow a ton of tomatoes or watermelon but everyone can find room to grow garlic. Buy a few heads from the farmers market, separate the cloves and plant them in your yard, on your balcony or throughout your neighborhood as a gift to your neighbors.

Beans, beans the musical fruit The more you eat The more you sing about how awesome they are. Harvested a bushel of these beans for fun tonight and shelled them before dinner. A nice, low key family activity. If we had grown more I would harvest a ton and throw a bean shelling get together. Farming has led me to the unnerving habit of contemplating the nature of our world and the order of things. This steadfast profession must breed philosophers. Also pleased to find the ducks began laying this week.

Okra harvest / story time. 200' of okra = "The 3 Bears", "The 3 Tomatoes", "The 3 Garlic" and "Caps for Sale" (w/ nondescript Eastern European accent).

A resolute Big Rainbow that outcompeted everything Nature could throw at it. Found this on a volunteer plant in last year's hog pasture. Going to save these seeds and start an army of badass (and delicious) tomato plants that cannot be subdued by weeds or fungus.

Bringing Cedar Mountain Organics honey to the Mt Vernon market tomorrow. The great folks at Cedar Mountain Organics keep a lot of hives on our farm and are teaching us the art of beekeeping. It warms my cold, black heart to see all the bees harvesting pollen and nectar in our fields each day.
