"And just what tasks do we have left to complete?" The Tarnished asked, speeding up to walk by Varré's side. He flashed his teeth in a grin and stared at the empty expanse of the bridge in front of him. "Here I thought that we might finally have a moment's rest at our home." While his tone was light, he felt as if he might rip out his other eye if Varré wanted them to do much more. He had already been thrashed by a demigod and gutted by a silver copy of himself. The last thing he needed was for Varré to send him off to get run through again, there was only so much his poor body could take. "I thought I might see if the nobles still retained their skill in battle." Varré stopped near the edge of the broken bridge. "Who better to test their blades against than my dear hound?" "You're hysterical." The Tarnished leaned against a crumbling pillar and raised a brow, hoping to encourage Varré to tell him what he actually had planned. "Relax, lover, I have little interest in putting you in harm's way." Varré's golden eyes were obscured beneath the darkness of his mask, but the Tarnished could just barely see the way they rolled. "I think you'll find my plans most agreeable." "And they are…?" Varré moved in close and brought a gloved hand to the Tarnished's neck, thumb trailing along his jaw. "You said it best yourself, it's imperative we test just how leashed the mimic tear is." The Tarnished's breath caught in his throat as he felt Varré's lips press against his pulse point, realization dawning on him. "Are you certain about this?" He asked after a moment passed and he regained the smallest amount of composure. While he didn't mind their proximity to Mohg, he just didn't trust that it was safe to be so vulnerable with the mimic tear. "Has a summoned spirit ever turned blade against its master?" Varré asked in turn. "There's no reason to believe this tear would be any different."

I know it's a popular theory, but I could never get behind the "Varré is the specific individual who killed your maiden at the start"

I can get behind that he told another Tarnished to kill a maiden to continue with their trial, but not only do they have to get to that very distant area off the map where you need a specific teleportation to go back to as there is no grace there. You also have to hope the scion doesn't jump you while over there. It's one of the open ended Elden ring things but it seems funny to imagine Varré going out of his way to pin point a maiden on an isolated island, kill her, get off the island and hope the sucker now without a maiden will wake up get pass or survive the scion, some how find a way to traverse down safely, swim to land get into the tomb, go through all that just so you can be the first one they meet when they wake up.

It would make sense to me if there was anything else that pointed to Varré besides him being the first guy you encountered.

Obviously I'm not saying he wouldn't do it. Given the chance to cut connection to the golden order would be his bread and butter, but the whole point of the trial is that you cut your connection to the two fingers and greater will by killing your own maiden. He only makes an exception for you because you happen to be maidenless at the time and prove that you are strong enough to take on a Demigod regardless of your set back, that makes you a useful and strong candidate as a knight for the Mohgwyn Dynasty.

Would love to hear others thoughts on this of course, but it's just something that has been on my mind. Perhaps there is something I missed, but as far as I'm aware, I couldn't find anything

There’s a significantly more likely scenario as to who killed your maiden (if she was ever even meant to be *your* maiden to begin with) right at the start, and it’s the giant fucking grafted Scion who’s trying to kill you

Godrick wants tarnished to graft, so he probably sends his scions out where they tend to wake up to cut out the whole waiting for them to arrive at Stormveil thing

Varre totally would kill someone, but there’s no logical reason why he would have killed this specific person! Not when there’s not even a clear way for him to have both gotten to the chapel of anticipation and left it

honestly i love masks but its not as fun to render as a face- also kind of annoyed the blood stuff kinda covers the rendering i did on the cloth but i cant be bothered rn, i need a nap

How much weight do you give Varré's mask? I'm always unsure myself but I do see many give it a big deal when he takes it off or a reluctancy to remove it in front of others. Obviously it's a part of his character design and a source of appeal for many being a soft near expressionless face, so taking it off feels like taking off a recognizable part of him.

It's surely meant to be a bit like a plague mask of some type, blocking diseases from being coughed up on their faces? Or it's to prevent them from being "targeted" outside their "work", so they stay faceless and nameless to the public at times?

No matter, I always enjoy any characterization of how others write/approach his mask. My personal is he's fine with others seeing his face, but he gets a bit of a kick out of seeing others bend over backwards and make a big deal out of it. He would tease them about how much they are willing to do just to see it like a reward. Eventually he might show them if they prove themselves worthy. He will also lift it with ease and no big flashy deal. The kicker is he hates leaving it off for too long. He's surprisingly expressive and he's used to people trying to deduce from his body language and words what he really means, that he forgets how easily he gives himself away with his face.

That's my personal take of course and would love to know others thoughts!

I also really roll with the idea of Varre being really expressive under the mask! I tend to headcanon that being a large portion as to why he keeps the mask on all the time, because he really hates the way his face makes him so easy to read. I think he really relishes the way that when you’re unable to see his face, you can never really get a good grasp on his actual thoughts

Another thing I think is that he really hated the mask at first and it took awhile for him to really begin to appreciate it

Back when mega absol z launched, I saw its Pokédex entry and was struck by how varre it was, so I’ve been mulling over this pokemon trainer varre concept for awhile

He supposedly works at a pokemon center, but I wouldn’t trust him
