literally most things that people write off as justĀ ātexturesā to use in graphics are stolen & unsourced material created by artists or photographers NOT meant to be used as elements in projects without royalty payments. you can sayĀ āitās just random tumblr posts they donāt careā but you wouldnāt want someone to take your work and edit into their work so they can be praised for their beautiful style and creativity even if they just post it on social media w/o profit, would you?? so maybe if you browse pinterest or google images for pictures without finding the original source, youāre using images that youāre not allowed to use without realizing it.
you see it on here a lot especially in (i wonāt link anything but iām sure you know what i mean) those album trackĀ āaestheticsā posts, auĀ āaestheticā posts (you see these less in kpop, but where people use non-royalty free images to kinda craft a visual au), and even just rather typical graphics that have a lot ofĀ ātextureā elements. and texture packs too!! thatās often where the problem starts; people just collect images (often literal art), compile them in a folder w/o sources, then insist no one can repost those images w/o crediting the person who compiled them. what???
SO may i suggest some of my fave places you can get FREE, ROYALTY-FREE elements that are totally legal to use
creativemarket has 6 free high-quality resources (textures, brushes, fonts, etc), different every week! wow awesome i check it every week
searchĀ āfreebieā on behance. awesome stuff!!! lots of v nice templates textures and fonts
mockup zone freebies
unsplash: tons of very nice free photographs, not shitty stock photos
pexels: same idea. + they have an adobe plugin so you can get photos without closing your editor damn nice
pixelsquid is a super cool free program (again w a ps plugin that i love) with lottts of super cool hq 3d elements!
as to not make this too long: spoongraphics, lostandtakenĀ (textures galore), pixeden, freebiesbug.
Iām gonna add a few more:
Morguefile is my favorite free stock photo site
Texturemate is full of excellent free textures, brushes, and patterns.Ā
Transparent Textures actually lets you combine colors and patterns to build your own texture right there in the browser.
Hey guys! Iām a sort of designer enthusiast/hobbyist and I do my fair share of freelancing, so overtime Iāve accumulated a list as well which I would love to share with you.
Freepik has anything from textures to layered psds, icons and so much more that is actually free to use.
Unsplash is a community of photographers which provides daily content that you can use! You donāt have to credit them but you should. Theyāre amazing.
Icons8 is basically a library of icons and icon sets, they have a little over 60,000 icons for you to choose from.
The Pattern Library is a very generous project of Julien Renvoye, heās basically created a library of amazing seamless patterns/textures you can use.
So a free tool called GLAZE has been developed that allows artists to cloak their artwork so it can't be mimicked by AI art tools.
AI art bros are big mad about it.

I donāt usually do reblogs but this may come in handy for some of you.
Disclaimer: using accents is NEVER required, but it can add a bit of fun! Donāt feel pressured to adopt one if you arenāt comfy with it!
Hereās a post with examples of Irish accents spoken by Irish people on Irish TV.
Hereās a YouTube called āHow to do a PROPER IRISH ACCENTā which says the first two how-to-do-Irish links in the OP are examples of how NOT to do it.
Though not specific about why, I think itās because they donāt pick and stick to a region, and thus unconsciously default to de generric sownd av stayge Oirish.
That YouTuberās approach - concentrating on the accent of an area, in this instance North Dublin - may be more focused than DM or Character voices require. On the other hand it may be just the thing for DMāing a long campaign, especially if DM or Character wants to sound like Colin Farrell, Colm Meaney or Brendan Gleesonā¦
Indeed, since thereās another video about How To Create 100 Distinctly Different Voices, this channel might actually be just the place for RPGārs. There are certainly DnD players making favourable comments about both videos.
YMMV, of course.
*****
No matter how bad a stage-Oirish accent may be (and there have been some hummers in Major Motion Pictures Near You) I donāt think it will ever match what I heard the other night on Talking Pictures.
The movie was āThe Gentle Gunmanā (Ealing 1952) in which thoroughly English actors John Mills and Dirk Bogarde played IRA men (and brothers) with accents that⦠Um, they didnāt⦠Erā¦
Letās just say āthings needed a lot more workā and leave it there.
On the flip-side, several of the real Irish actors seem (to my ear, anyway) to have dialled things up to eleven, as if less-broad accents werenāt identifiably Irish enough for a wider audience; a bit like kitting out the Scots in āBraveheartā with centuries-wrong kilts.
The film also had a crucial action scene supposedly near the Harland & Wolff shipyard in Belfast, though it could have been filmed anywhere with industrial-area terraced houses and probably was. If anyone in that scene spoke with a Norn Iron accent - NOT the same as a generic Irish accent at all (at all) - I missed it.
Perhaps thatās just as wellā¦

This link is to the RTE show āTodayā; Iām pretty sure itās available world-wide; if so, the link for this edition is good for 30 days from today, 12 January 2023.
The show features pharmacist Dónal OāSullivan giving advice on avoiding colds, flu and worse stuff, starting at 0:05:00 and delivered in a splendid example of a Cork accent*, which is notably different to what most non-Irish people expect an āIrish accentā to sound like.
* His accent and speech patterns are distinctive enough that they may be specific to a particular district of the city or region of the surrounding countryside. I donāt know, but someone else mightā¦

And then of course thereās always the acshent, what acshent? approach of Sean Connery, who played a British secret agent, a Berber chieftain, an Irish cop, an Ancient Greek king, a Lithuanian submarine captain and an Egyptian-Spanish immortal in ekshactly the shame voish.
Nobody argued with him.
And nobody - if theyāre wise - will argue with their DM, either.
Becaushe great big rocksh or wandering monshtersh can drop from shuch unekshpected playshesh, and shaving throwsh donāt alwaysh work if the DM ish feeling out of shortshā¦
i hate that every time i look for color studies and tips to improve my art and make it more dynamic and interesting all that comes up are rudimentary explanations of the color wheel that explain it to me like im in 1st grade and just now discovering my primary colors
āred and green are opposites š„°ā cool now how do i paint a tree with pinks and blues without it looking like a childās finger painting or incongruous blobs of rainbow vomit
ok i canāt explain it very well but im looking for tips and techniques for rendering art like
with specifically the highlights and colors being hues that compliment each other, donāt distract from the scene, and make it more interesting/visually appealing
is it too much to ask
gonna drop some sources I have saved on Pinterest! I don't know if these all link back to the original sources so apologies for that
cohesive but still contrasting
This kind of talks about color and composition
This is a bit about landscape specifically
Values & composition
Contrast in composition
Balance in colors & values
This one's more for palette building but I think it's useful and can be applied to the other ones
Cohesion within compositions/lighting
"Chromatic fringe" - I also see people using this with shading, they bring in a transition color that is a different hue than the base color or shadow, it makes it so that less vibrancy is lost and it doesn't get muddy!
This one specifically has a lot of process behind the style of painting you're looking for!
Also one of my favorite artists who makes bright and colorful art like this is Not Sorry Art on TikTok & YouTube, her website is here and it's<3 my fav. She has some videos where you can see her process
With the oranges painting you put as an example, I noticed they painted the lighter values more toward yellow - they also exaggerated the hues of the undertones of the photo, so I'm guessing they either did it in their head or bumped the saturation up to get a closer look! I really love these paintings you shared and I definitely share your desire to paint/draw like that :)
thanks this is super helpful! /gen

listen, this post is about Martin Blackwood specifically but if you struggle drawing fat characters and would like to improve and learn to actually draw fat people instead of just making characters skinny i have a couple of resources:
Morpho: Anatomy for Artists by Michel Lauricella - You've probably heard of this book and for good reason, it's relatively affordable but there is a drive link to scans you can dm me for if necessary.
fatphotoref - This is an Excellent resource started by a fat queer artist and run by volunteers. It is password protected, you can dm me for it (I'll only share with ppl who post original art on their blogs, I don't want to lead trolls to this site)
Another resource for the post! MagicPoser, the phone app, allows you to adjust body type on their most recent models! So you can make a fat 3D doll to pose however you'd like. Reference photos with fat models are pretty difficult to find in the perfect pose sometimes, so this is a super helpful tool!!

Skip Google for Research
As Google has worked to overtake the internet, its search algorithm has not just gotten worse.Ā It has been designed to prioritize advertisers and popular pages often times excluding pages and content that better matches your search termsĀ
As a writer in need of information for my stories, I find this unacceptable.Ā As a proponent of availability of information so the populace can actually educate itself, it is unforgivable.
Below is a concise list of useful research sites compiled by Edward Clark over on Facebook. I was familiar with some, but not all of these.
ā
Google is so powerful that it āhidesā other search systems from us. We just donāt know the existence of most of them. Meanwhile, there are still a huge number of excellent searchers in the world who specialize in books, science, other smart information. Keep a list of sites you never heard of.
www.refseek.com - Academic Resource Search. More than a billion sources: encyclopedia, monographies, magazines.
www.worldcat.org - a search for the contents of 20 thousand worldwide libraries. Find out where lies the nearest rare book you need.
https://link.springer.com - access to more than 10 million scientific documents: books, articles, research protocols.
www.bioline.org.br is a library of scientific bioscience journals published in developing countries.
http://repec.org - volunteers from 102 countries have collected almost 4 million publications on economics and related science.
www.science.gov is an American state search engine on 2200+ scientific sites. More than 200 million articles are indexed.
www.pdfdrive.com is the largest website for free download of books in PDF format. Claiming over 225 million names.
www.base-search.net is one of the most powerful researches on academic studies texts. More than 100 million scientific documents, 70% of them are free
