Napoleon and Illya: Two sides of the same coin. The same really dorky coin.
Proof that Napoleon Solo is a huge softie that actually deeply, deeply cares about people, no matter how shallow and charming and cavalier he pretends to be:
Illya’s watch. I mean, come on. Napoleon interrupts an urgent time-bound mission to deliberately recover Illya’s father’s watch for him, because it matters to Illya. There is literally no tactical or rational reason for Napoleon doing that. He just does it because he cares about Illya. Because regaining the watch would make Illya happy.
Napoleon’s protective of Gaby even after finding out that she apparently betrayed them. As in, he puts his life on the line to save her.
Napoleon dives in after a drowning Illya to save Illya’s life, even though it means putting himself back in danger after neatly escaping to safety.
Napoleon refuses to shoot Illya even before he knows who Illya is, simply because it “doesn’t seem right” to shoot him. Er, Napoleon? Aren’t you supposed to be a badass killer secret agent?
Napoleon disobeys his command to kill Illya to instead give up and share the incredibly important device that his whole mission was about capturing. Like. He cares more about Illya than he does about his mission.
Proof that Illya Kuryakin is a huge softie that actually deeply, deeply cares about people, no matter how wrathful and stern and uncaring he pretends to be:
Illya is very sentimentally attached to his father’s watch, and clearly loves his deceased parents dearly.
Illya, too, is protective of Gaby despite finding out that she betrayed them. As in, he also puts his life on the line to save her.
Illya is kind to little old ladies and calls them “dear,” even when he’s breaking into their humble apartments on serious KGB business. He could just be brusque and shove them aside, or shoot them to leave no witnesses. But, no. He’s adorably considerate and chivalrous.
Illya rescues Napoleon from that horrible Nazi torturer, even though he could easily have proceeded alone, to claim the device he was ordered to claim without competing with Napoleon for it, and leaving Napoleon to be tortured to death. But, despite the fact that it would be more efficient and logical, Illya can’t do that. He just can’t. I wonder why?
Illya, like Napoleon, disobeys his command to kill Napoleon to instead share the incredibly important device that his whole mission was about capturing. Given that Illya is a goddamn KGB agent and has been conditioned by his own shame and the KGB’s training to be flawlessly obedient, that’s one hell of a rebellion. Because he can’t bear hurting Napoleon. A guy that he apparently can’t stand. Wow.
Basically, both Napoleon and Illya are fluffy Care Bears in disguise. Very flimsy disguises. Guys. Really. Guys. Gaby’s way more hardcore than either of you. Your hearts are the consistency of melty chocolate fondants.
