Too much on her plate, that was the initial conundrum, trying to sort out what to believe and what to dismiss. It wasn’t an easy task amid the convoluted information she’d received, the truth getting lost somewhere in the chaos. Still, she wanted to believe only half of what she’d seen. Perhaps there was an innocent explanation, but her mind kept wandering back to evidence she’d found to suggest otherwise, stirring a sickening feeling in her gut, like a meal that just didn’t sit right. Suspicion only entertained her thoughts as the mystery deepened. However, she knew that only he could tell her the truth and she was bound to find it out, one way or another.
Upon inserting her key into the lock, she found the apartment door already open. Of course that meant Nick was home. Why did that thought scare her for a moment? Why did she feel desire to turn tail and find a hotel in which to spend the night? Taking a deep breath, the bunny crossed the threshold. There was nothing to fear, she convinced herself, not until she got answers.
“Nick?” Her voice seemed hollow in the entryway. “You here? I’m hoping so because the door was unlocked… Why is it so dark in here?”
Okay, great, the ruse may just hold. Nick lay on his back on the couch, a cool, damp hand-towel draped over his eyes. He’d heard the rabbit approaching as soon as she’d arrived on the floor, and had been waiting for her, although it wasn’t glaringly obvious he had been. Her call out to him was met with a quiet, pained moan, preceding a more apt explanation. “Caught a headache, fluff, sorry,” He whispered in response. It wasn’t as though he was actually suffering a headache. This was, instead, a diversion tactic which should serve rather well. Divert her attention away from the matters he knew she’d press him on, and defer and deflect as much of the conversation. The less she knows, the better, he figured. But it was only a matter of time before he would have to let her in on some of the details of his private life. He wanted to prevent that for as long as possible, for both of their sakes. In the meanwhile, at least, he was trying to keep at least ten steps ahead of her.
|It’s Complicated|
He’d been made. Earlier that day, Nick had seen his partner and friend, the renowned detective Judy Hopps, overseeing one of his private meetings. He didn’t know how much she had already found out about his other life, but he could only perform damage control when she came home. Which he had expected would be in the next few minutes. Until then, the fox had to prevent himself from panicking too terribly much about a possibly blown cover.

[A Wild Reunion]
The elder vulpine in the car could only blink and grin as he listened to Nick’s suggestion, stepping out of the car after the officer did so.
“A minute is all the time in the world for me, kiddo” he stated confidently, taking out his glock before radioing his men “We’ve been given the greenlight, boys. Zach, take the guy on the wall, Sheik, windows, Andre… Yeaaah, pick whatever, I’ll be on the front door. We only have one minute to clean the pool so keep this clean, leave the girl for the fuzz though.” he ordered with a bit of a chuckle by the end.
When Victor finally got the confirmation of their orders, the vulpine drew his glock and scurried towards the entrance of the warehouse swiftly and as silently as possible.
Once he was there, the vulpine gave a nod towards Nick to signal the timer before shooting the doorknob and rushing in.
All of a sudden there was a loud crash and seven shots could be heard as well as a loud scream from what seemed to be a little girl. Ten more seconds later, Victor came out of the warehouse, walking towards Nick as if he was just having an evening stroll.
“Floor’s all yours, officer” said the vulpine as he holstered his weapon, leaning against his SUV with his arms crossed. Deep inside, Victor had a bit of regret in showing just how smooth his hit team operated in the eyes of a detective, but then again, the other part of him hoped that Nick was somewhat impressed, if not a little bit, that even lowlives like them could move like clockwork under the right leadership.
Nick couldn’t deny, that was fast: these guys had skilll. He could only wonder where they received the training that produced that level of discipline.
“I’m not gonna lie, I am impressed,” the younger fox said as Victor approached, coming out of the building. “Now get your guys out of there and as far from the scene as possible. IA’s going to be up my ass, so we’ll need an alibi. You wait for me in the SUV, alright? I’ll call this in, move in on the ‘probable cause’ justification, clear the building, and then meet you here. What happened was we were sitting in your vehicle, watching the building, when a group of masked creatures stormed the facility. Several shots were fired, however forensics will show that none of the shots were mine. You keep your wits about you and we’ll get out of this situation without so much as a slap on the wrist.”
He velcroed on a tactical vest and retrieved a shotgun to breach the building with from the rear of his personal vehicle, then pulled out his cell phone and dialed the station. They picked up on the second ring, and Nick explained the situation in urgent, concise terms, “This is Detective Nick Wilde, Intelligence, reporting multiple shots fired in a location believed to be the whereabouts of a missing person. Responding officers be advised, officer on scene is plainclothes.“
To play up the role, he approached the door cautiously, checking all sectors as he was the only one to do it for him. Normally, with a partner, one would get a slight amount of cover by two sets of eyes and weapons scanning the possible sectors and corners, however, this time it came down to the sly fox by his lonesome. With a firmly-placed kick, he knocked the already-shot out door in and shouldered the shotgun. “ZPD!” He called out and entered.
A few minutes later he exited, shotgun slung over his back, holding the young cub as several other units arrived on scene. After a few words with said units and handing the girl off to another squad, he approached Victor’s car, gesturing for the elder to exit the vehicle. He could tell already that the hellish amount of paperwork in his future would be keeping him up all night, and probably well into the next morning.
“Yeah, but…I need a broom to clean up the place.” He told his double. “Look, man…I don’t know what to tell you.” Nick sighed.
“You know what, I think if we just split up and meet at my place, we should be fine.” Standing up on a nearby stool, he fished a collar out. “Try this one on. It should be big enough, but don’t get mad. It can shock you.” he warned.
“Sounds good enough. All I’ll need is an address and I’ll get there,” he said, folding his arms.
He grabbed the collar and examined it. “Is there any way to deactivate it, or shut it off? Before we put it on, it might be nice to know how to take it off, ya-know?”

Ascending to the rank of detective had put a lot of experience under Judy’s belt, dealing with many situations. That said, when they got the call, she felt a shudder run through her, knowing that it was very serious business that she and Nick were about to step into, a school shooting being something she’d never had to face. The details were still sketchy, as dispatch had only given them minor ones at best, leading them to figure out the rest as they were to be first on the scene. Whatever the situation might have been, Judy had to detach herself from things and follow protocol, which was easier said than done.
Nodding to her partner, she steeled herself to the task given her and roared up out of the place they’d been parked, spraying dirt and rocks in the wake. It was obviously going to be anything but routine when they arrived and Judy knew she had been trained for this sort of situation, but that didn’t mean she was ready to face it head on. In a best case scenario no one would get hurt, that was not the case here. Other than keeping her eyes on the road, Judy wasn’t one for much conversation, given the gravity of everything and before she knew it, they had arrived on the scene.
Chaos was the most fitting word to describe the school, panic seizing both students and teachers alike as many had gathered in the parking lot as they pulled up. Beyond the door to the high school, nothing more was known, the location of the shooter or shooters cloaked in mystery. There were rumors flying through the faculty and student body gathered on the street, hearsay about where one had seen the perpetrator or another one had witnessed a gruesome scene that video games and movies hadn’t prepared them for, Judy’s heart aching for each and every one of the innocent lives shattered by the event. The press had begun to gather as well, making more of a circus out of the almost war-like conditions.
Violet eyes, trying not to show fear, turned to her partner. “Hand me the vest and a gun and let’s assess the situation.” There was a little more confidence in her voice than in her stance, a nervous shudder running the length of her frame. “Are we going in or waiting for backup to handle this mob out here?” No one else could be allowed to enter the school and they needed quality control, barriers, if mainly to keep the prying press out of the line of fire. Was she ready to enter that building? The large front doors loomed like an unwelcoming beacon to a layer of hell no creature should set foot beyond. However, Judy knew there could be more casualties inside and breaking into that hell was the only way to save lives and bring an end to the whole tragedy.
Trying not to focus on the wailing students, huddled in groups, praying, cussing, or just looking completely lost, the bunny kept her attention on her partner, an exasperated sigh leaving her lips.
The feeling – of not wanting to speak – was shared between them. Nick was nearly silent the rest of the way to the school, breaking the silence only to shout out ‘Clear!’ at every intersection along their way as they sped along, the call stating that there was no on-coming traffic that could pose a threat to them. No, the threats they would face were soon to come.
Before the car even skidded to a stop, Nick had forced his door open and stepped onto the black pavement of the parking lot. He promptly proceeded to the rear and opened the hatch. Vest slapped on and assault rifle strap slung around his shoulder, he prepared a light utility belt so that he could communicate with the other units coming onsite. Likewise, he prepared a smaller belt for the rabbit, who was currently keeping a watch on the scene developing before them. The fox tossed the vest to Judy first, then handed over her rifle and belt. “We don’t have time,” he hastily responded. “Backup will deal with the mob, and the press knows what to do. If they enter it’s their funeral. We’re first responders, let’s move,” he said, and took point, moving towards the oak front doors.
A large, diverse group of young students huddled together near a wall outside the front doors, separated by species, years, social class level, and amount of blood-soaked clothing they bore. But they were all alike in the same horrified and shocked expression on their faces. Nick paused before entering the school, allowing Judy to stack up on him, but his main reason was to triage some information. “Did you get a look at the shooter?! What do they look like?” He asked the students with a tone of panicked urgency.
“Dark.”
“Clad in dark.”
“Black clothes.”
“M-mask.”
The fox also gathered that the shooter was also a little taller than he was. He reached for his radio and pressed the transmitter. “23-09. Shooter is believed to be dressed in dark clothes and a mask. No visual, though we’ve got a crowd of survivors out here, and media is on scene. Proceeding inside building.” Comms off, to Judy, “Watch my six.” As he neared the door, gun raised at attention, a group of students burst through, screaming. “Get out of here! Run! Run!” The fox directed these new survivors. At least those kids were safe for now.

“You say one more word and I’m gonna blow a hole in your fucking head before dragging you down to hell with me,” and it was obvious now – this time the rabbit was serious. The game was over, this guy was clearly unhinged and a potential danger to far too many. “You shifty mother fucking fox,” Judy snarled, her eyes rolling, “You don’t call the fucking shots here. You put the gun down first. I’ve let you talk out of your ass for far too long. You put the gun down and I won’t shoot you, and that’s the best offer you’re gonna get.”
She took a small step forward, the zipties in her pocket coming to the fore front of her mind, “How old are you, Shifty? Too old to be playing innocent, but sure, I’ll spell it out for you.” It was more for her sake at this point – if she could drive the knife in deeper she would, over and over until this idiot got the clear picture, “What they did was in self defense too, fox. You talk a lot of shit like you know what you’re talking about, so how’s this – probable cause. You heard of that one in your penny detective novels? Reason one: your collar is gone. It’s the one thing keeping everyone else safe from you preds going savage. Why would you take off your collar unless you were going to do something crooked? So if you wanna play the morality card let’s play the morality card – by killing you we save thousands of strangers whose lives are far beyond a no good bastard of a fox. Who knows who you’re gonna steal and swindle from next? Who knows how many bunnies or other small prey mammals you’ve gutted – for self defense, sure. ”
Judy shook her head, her face hardening with hatred and frustration. Truthfully… she was scared. He knew her name – then again, anyone could have. She was the first bunny officer, the one who never took a break, “Why do you keep talking like you’ve got some kind of point to prove? I’ve never met you, Fox. I’m gonna say it one more time cause you seem a bit slow – you wanna prove you’re more than your species? Put your gun down and I won’t shoot.”
He laughed, softly, yet sadly. “Here’s the best that I’m going to offer you,” the fox of deteriorating will said, succeeded by a soft *click,* and *thump,* as he ejected his magazine onto the ground. “It’s got one .40 caliber round chambered, and it is capable of firing without the magazine inserted. It also has a hair-trigger. With all this racist talk and hate you’re spewing, I don’t think I can lower my weapon, for my own safety. A bullet of this caliber travels at two and a half kilometers per second. Much faster than the speed of sound. If you shot me, it would kill me way, way before I could turn and shoot you. It’s not like it is on TV, although I’m sure you’ve got lots of experience killing innocent predators, so you are probably more than familiar. However, with a trigger like this, and with my dying brain sending signals to every area of my body, there’s a decent chance I could tense up, and, my gun still trained on you, take you down with me. I gather you already know this, and decided you’re willing to take that risk, and I’m sorry you’re willing to die for someone like me. But it doesn’t have to come to that. If I was this determined on killing you, or even doing anything worse to you, don’t you think I would have shot you already?”
“If we both lower our weapons on a count of three, perhaps we can start de-escalating this situation. Isn’t that something you learned with the ZPD? De-escalation? I know I sure did. I’m not going to let you overpower me, either. You don’t seem to remember, but I was trained in the exact same hand-to-hand combat you were. Hell, I was given the exact same training you were...heh, maybe not the stereotyping or the racial discrimination part, but I guess your academic instructor was different than mine. I promise you, I’ve been shifty in the past. I’ve pulled many pranks and hustles and I’ve stolen. And then I met this bunny out from the burrows, met her in the city. Her name was Judy Hopps, and she was the first bunny officer in the ZPD. I didn’t think much of her at first, I thought she’d fail, that she’d get crushed, just like her dreams of making the world a better place. But I was forced into working with her, and eventually she taught me how to see the bigger picture. Taught me that we’re not just our species, that we’re not what society expects us to be. Convinced me to join the police. Heh, never thought that would happen. I’ve pulled a lot of shit in the past, but I’ve never, never impersonated a cop. This is the real deal. And, if we lower our weapons, I can replace my weapon with my phone, which has photographic evidence that corroborates ev-ery-thing I’ve been saying this whole time. Please, officer, just consider it. Now I’m going to count to three, and we can both slowly lower our weapons, re-holster them, and we can figure this out,” he said, calmly, dropping his line-of-sight but keeping the barrel pointed in the bunny’s direction as he began lowering the weapon. “Now, three, two...”by one the weapon was still pointed, but nearing his side. At least he was dedicated. If he was to die tonight, he could at least die with his integrity intact. But by this point, he was ready for this charade to end, one way or another.
|Deviant Behaviour|
The shit this fox had the audacity to spill made Judy almost unload on him out of spite. She was tired, and growing ever angrier as he continued to spout whatever nonsense he did. She laughed bitterly, though it sounded more like a bark – anything to make this guy shut up, “Mighty strong case of projecting, you fucking lunatic. Did you miss your rabies vaccinations? One of the most eloquent crazy mammals I’ve ever met, I’ll give you that. Put. Your. Fucking. Weapon. Down. You don’t wanna shoot me? Prove it, fox.”
She felt uncomfortable, because his comments hit close to home on some occasions. This fox had no right questioning her morals. Judy shook it off best as she could; he wanted to get into her head so she’d let her guard down. Never trust a shifty fox, “You shot down two prey, predator.” She shot back cruelly, standing still with her gun trained to the vulpine, though her form was a buzz with energy, ready to snap towards action as soon as the need arose, “I am serving and I am protecting innocents. Who knows just how many more you’ve killed in your fucked up delusions? You got what you deserved. I’ve never met you before; do you honestly think I’d lower myself to rub elbows with one of my natural predators?”
The name Delgatto rang a bell somewhere or another, and as she spoke it finally came to her, “Juan Delgatto. Tiger, male, arrested for armed robbery and petty theft. Further investigation proved suspect in a long chain of distribution of illegal narcotics. Currently serving ten years.”
Clearly this wasn’t working. Time for plan B. “Wow, I really gotta find out what kinda stuff you’re smoking. I’ve collabed with Narcotics a bit in the past, but never, and I mean never have I seen someone so delusional. You take a hit in the evidence locker? That’s not like you Judy, come on,” he chuckled, albeit grimly. “Now, like I recommended, why don’t we both take a deep breath and lower our weapons. I’ll lower mine if you lower yours first. But I’m not stupid enough to lower mine and let you keep yours trained on me. Not after the shit your two compadres just pulled.”
He paused, but only to gather more words to spit. “I dunno if you remember, but when your hitmen picked me up on the streets tonight, I wasn’t this bloodied up. They were trying to kill me, and for what? Because they could? What I did was self defense. I wouldn’t be alive right now if I hadn’t killed them. It was me or them, and you can’t expect me to put these two strangers’ lives ahead of mine, when they’re trying to kill me, can you? Unless something else is skewed in your little universe, murder is still a crime. At least I can account for every criminal I’ve killed. Each one I shot was a kill of necessity. They had guns and they would have killed me and my partner if I hadn’t pulled the trigger. Can you and your guys claim such accountability?” “Fucking cheese and crackers, you’re clearly not my Judy. You’re not my partner. My partner wouldn’t do this. I don’t know what they did to you in one night, but they fucked you up bad. If there’s any shred of you left, I’ve gotta ask, what do I need to do to bring you back? How do I prove to you what I’m talking about? How the fuck do I get through to you? Because this ain’t you, Carrots.”
