An image. All of her life, she’s been striving to establish and fulfill an image. It’s what all great artists do: create a style and carry on with it for the rest of their lives. It might change, but it still validates their existence, defines exactly who they are as a manifestation of themselves. Their wants, their needs, their hopes, their dreams. For as long as Johanna Sinclair can remember, she’s been searching for that image of herself.
Born somewhere in the neck of Belfast, Ireland, the sisters at Our Holy Mother Catholic Adoption Agency found her on their doorstep one stormy evening. For a couple of years, up until she was about three, Johanna Sinclair - known simply as Johanna at the time - lived in the adoption agency. Once she turned into the size of a toddler, the adoption agency that had taken her in moved her into a home for her certain age range - a daycare of sorts. Johanna lived there rather peacefully, getting along with the other kids quite well in spite of her generally meek exterior.
At the age of seven, she was chosen as one of the ‘special’ children to be transported into America in hopes that she would be adopted there. None of the couples in Belfast took much of an interest to her and other quieter children in the adoption agency.
Johanna didn’t see much of a success in America, either. She ended up living in a foster home for the rest of her childhood, with nothing to keep her company other than her art. She would spend the majority of her time cooped up in her bedroom painting the days away or reading magazines, slowly becoming obsessed with obtaining a certain image.
The way Johanna thought was, the only reason why she didn’t interest any of the parents that came along, was that she was too plain. If she had aspired to be like the girls in the magazines or the girls in the shows she watched, she’d be interesting. Her teenage years were spent mostly striving to achieve perfection, but with her status as a foster child, that was difficult to reach.
So she often spent her teenage years pretending to be someone she wasn’t. Someone rich. Someone who belonged to a family. She created a false identity in Johanna Sinclair, finally branding herself with a last name and an image. Dark hair, blue eyes. She wanted to be enigmatic, interesting - funny, but wistful.
Johanna made a lot of friends. Although she was still a bit on the loner side, she found herself becoming more recognized with the clothes she wore and the person she tried to be. She was a chameleon, adjusting her personality according to the people she was with. Overall, she didn’t just create one image, but she created multiple.
And so to this day, she still pretends. Once she reached eighteen, the foster home she belonged to was no longer able to house her, so they sent her off into the streets to find a home. She currently lives in the same shoddy apartment she found when she was eighteen, in the heart of a big city where no one really knows who she is.
