I know I normally post lighthearted Criminal Minds incorrect quotes here and I fully intend to return to doing that, but with the recent cancellations of First Kill and The Wilds I just need to vent for a moment.Β
Those shows were both phenomenal in their own ways. First Kill had really interesting characters and a super cool world building aspect that I couldnβt wait to find out more about. It fit in the queer teen angst supernatural genre so well, and itβs a show that I wouldβve killed to have as a teenager when all my friends were swooning over Vampire Diaries and debating Stefan vs. Damon. The Wilds had incredible writing and beautifully complex characters. Itβs the only show Iβve seen that isnβt afraid to portray teen girls the way they are, without worrying about making them perfect or likeable. Iβve never seen a show that allows a female to get as angry as Toni does, to act as irrationally as Leah does, to grieve and scream like Rachel does, to be stuck in childhood like Martha, or stuck in adulthood like Dot. I fell in love with all of those girls and I will miss them dearly.
An unintended consequence of all these cancelations is that they will send more queer shows to the grave before they even get a chance to rise. No one will want to watch future WLW shows that have first seasons out, because they donβt have any hope that they will get a second season! And why should they think that? The evidence clearly supports that networks and services donβt care about strong female representation, and they never will.Β
Anyways, thank you for listening to my thoughts and my rant, feel free to vent below. I will miss First Kill and The Wilds so much.Β
