Various Powers of Mermaids 🌊

Weather Magic - whether it’s because a mermaid was captured and inclement weather dooms and follows whoever took them, or simply a power the mermaid has, this is something that happens often in mermaid lore. the weather and mermaids are almost intrinsically tied to one another. (ex: Sea Mithers, Ningyo, Cecelia)

Disguise - many mermaids have the ability to disguise themselves as something appealing to humans, or to hide themselves from humans entirely. the ability to transform comes in many shapes, from a cap or coat to mystical powers.  (ex; Melusina,  Merrow, Finfolk, Ceasg, Selkie)

Enchanted Voice - perhaps the most famous quality of a mermaid is the voice, as throughout mythology they are known for their beautiful singing. it is also a common theme that their voices can bewitch the listeners, though sometimes for less than virtuous reasons. (ex; Siren, Merrow)

Drowning - drowning can be interpreted in both the physical and metaphysical sense, to drown the spirit of a person and surround it with negative energy that is hard to rid.

Granting Wishes / Prosperity - just as a mermaid might curse varying types of doom and damnation and bad weather on those who harm or threaten them, there are those that will bless those kind to them, often with wealth and good weather. (ex; Ben-varrey, Ceasg)

Prophecy - some mermaids, though less heard of, may even prophesize the future for a human, though their reasons for doing so are often unknown. (ex; Siren, Amabie)

Crying Pearls - though it is little more than a curiosity that pops up in lore, the idea that mermaids are able to cry tears of pearls is present, though its purpose or reason is unknown. (origins in chinese lore, but doesn’t refer to any specific kind of mermaid)

In the early 1800s a man named Little Jon lived in this so called earth cabin (swe. ‘backstuga’) located in southern Småland, Sweden. An earthen cabin is built partially buried in the ground, in this case there’s three walls of stone and one wall made of wood. In Sweden earthen cabins was common in the forests from the 1600s until the late 1800s. Link

Peter Lik

The artistic quality of Peter Lik’s work is a topic of a lot of discussion in the art world. He is a photographer that has created his own market to sell his photographs in a very successful way, something the art critics and galleries despise. Probably because the only person making money from his photographs is Peter Lik. Art is a very lucrative business and regardless of what I think about the quality of Peter Lik’s work is ironic to see the same people that decide to consider a literal pile of garbage a work of art (because of its insightful social commentary) or artificially inflate prices of their preferred artists insulting the work of Lik because of its lack of artistic merit. My favorite quotes of the news articles seem that imply that everyone that buys (or even likes) his work is stupid, because it will have a low value in the future and consists of “oversaturated” landscapes meant to not insult anyone. 

The moment when you buy into the idea that art’s value/worth is determined by a precious few that control its ultimate reselling potential you should shut up about anyone else calling their work art and selling it for whatever price they want. To my US followers

Please take the time to sign and share this petition. I don’t usually do the political thing, but this is something that needs to be changed. I got blindsided by this like many others when I got out, and it helps no one as it stands.

This is my husband, and he's being withheld VA benefits because he accepted separation pay. He's a disabled vet and lord knows we could really use the payment they'd be offering us, but he will not receive it for another 2-3 years.

He was forced out of the military due to a herniated disk. He was temporarily walking with a cane, and was harassed by someone who outranked him. He was called a liar and a faker when he refused to stop walking with the cane to take his PT test. THEN the military helped him build a resume that guaranteed he wouldn't get hired because they contracted that out to a civilian who didn't care about their job.

THIS IS NOT OKAY. If we can make a difference with this, then maybe it'll save other people the frustration, humiliation, and trouble.

Charities/organisations to avoid:

PETA: They’d rather spend their money on publicity campaigns than on the animals in their care. PETA killed 73.8% of the animals in their care in 2015 (x)

FCKH8: Is a for-profit company that exploits oppressed groups for money. They’re also wildly uninformed, and spread misogyny, cissexism and bi/panphobia, as well as stealing their posts/designs (x)

Autism Speaks: They spend most of their money on researching a way to eliminate autism, heighten the stigma against autism and don’t have a single autistic person on their board (x)

Please support other, better charities, and feel free to add any others you can think of to this.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure: CEO makes insane amounts of money, they deny a lot of requests for wigs/help with treatment/etc., and have attempted to sue other charities that use the color pink as part of their anti-breast cancer campaign. ( x x x )
