respectfully i have been hella eyeing shayne these past couple of videos. his glasses? mustache? HAIR???? jesus christ courtney can i be u for a day?
i am fully aware that he is married in real life, but that doesn’t necessarily stop me from daydreaming. and don’t worry, i’m a rando from the midwest thousands of miles away. so even if i was delusional enough to THINK i had a chance, i’m physically too far away to commit to anything insane.
yeah. i have lots of thoughts right now. maybe i’ll write about them. idk. he just looks super hot lately like oh my god stop
shayne rolled his eyes, already obeying with a wordless reply.
you pressed play on your phone and put it down on the center console. soon after, the car’s speakers filled with hepburn’s moon river.
hardly satisfied with your feat, you turned your body toward your door and stared out the window. you were mad at him, because he ruined the moment. the sun was perfectly set in front of the both of you as you drove on the highway. mountains became more prominent on different parts of the horizon. shayne had just finished driving through the majority of albuquerque and you felt the song was fitting for the view, at least, before you started to argue about something you didn’t even remember anymore.
dream maker, you heart breaker; wherever you’re goin’, i’m goin’ your way
you hated when this happened. you found yourself remembering every argument, all forming into one giant fight in your mind. about leaving on time, about family members making the trip hard, about each other making the journey unbearable; no matter how you went about it, you two had basically fought and jabbed at one another the entire time. and the damn song you put on made you feel worse, when it was supposed to romanticize the sunset.
two drifters off to see the world, there’s such a lot of world to see
sometimes, you felt so alone. you felt trapped, because he was with you when you found out about your parents. who else could you talk to about anything? you didn’t have your mentors anymore to help with relationship situations like these. you were too old to google the problem and search for answers. hopeless moments lasted forever, and branded the edges of your memories as if to remind you that you never truly enjoyed a quiet moment.
with a sigh, you placed your hands in your lap and picked at your nails. to your surprise, shayne’s right hand grabbed your left and brought it closer to him.
“i’m sorry. i’m sorry for arguing with you right now, and for arguing so much during the trip. i picked a lot of fights that i shouldn’t have, and i didn’t mean to do that to you. i know it’s really hard, going back after so long and around their anniversary, but i love you, and i know your parents would be proud of you.”
you gave his hand a squeeze as you fought back tears; your head and body still faced the passenger window. “i’m sorry too.”
his thumb brushed against your knuckles. no words were exchanged as the song ended, and it went back to playing whatever was on his playlist.
“can you play it again?” he asked.
you nodded your head, unsure if he saw it. not wanting to break the connection, you grabbed your phone with your free hand. the song played again, and this time, your body faced him as you both silently gazed into the mountainous sunset.
moon river, wider than a mile; i’m crossing you in style someday
