‘SMV Engineers’ is ‘The Engineer’s Choice’ for ‘Outstanding Concrete Structure of Surat’ by ICEA & Ultra Tech Cement Ltd.
It is our pleasure to announce that the award has been conferred to SMV Engineers for ‘Outstanding Concrete Structure of Surat’ for the year 2017-18 in the category: ‘Individual Dwelling Residential Unit’ for Mr. Janak Mistry Bungalow”.
This 8000sft private residence is with exposed concrete and steel work. The house features a floating multi-purpose room and hanging box structure. SMVE used structural steel and composite members to achieve architectural goals and to optimize the design. A BIM model was developed to show structural concept and to identify conflicts.
Westin Hilton Head Island –Resort and Spa Expansion
The project Westin Hilton Head Island –Resort and Spa Expansion is located on the beach Town of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, United States
This 6000sft expansion consists of double storied 163ft long community hall. It‘s elevated first floor is framed with steel-concrete composite beams and deck system supported by RC walls and columns above beach level with sliding glass walls offering unobstructed ocean view.
Roof framing is designed with double pitched exposed HSS framed steel roof trusses supported on steel columns. Lateral resistance is provided using ordinary moment frames. SMV provided engineering design using state of the art analysis software. Project has been successfully constructed within timeline and currently in use.
New Toyota Dealership, WA, USA
(A PSM Project)
SMV is delighted to showcase construction progress time-lapse video of non-traditional concrete tilt-up wall panel construction of one of the largest Toyota dealerships on the West coast of US. This 93000sft facility, which SMV helped design has successfully finished construction.
THE SIGNATURE, GIFT CITY, GANDHINAGAR “Ring the Bell” Our Honourable Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi inaugurated India’s first International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) designated tower‘The Signature’ building along with International Exchange India INX on 9th Jan, 2017. SMV Engineers acted as a Proof Check Consultant (PCC) on behalf of Halvorson & Partners of USA to review and approve the structural design of this project. It is exciting for the SMV Engineers to be part of this prestigious project.
ONE OF THE LARGEST COLD STORAGE FACILITIES IN THE USA
(A PSM Project)
This project is one of the largest automated storage and retrieval systems (ASRS) projects in the USA. SMV helped provide detailed structural design and BIM for this project.
Three components of the projects are:
1. High bay cold storage - this area is 139’-0”tall single story with a plan area of 157,000sf providing 2.17M cubic ft of cold storage. The structure is supported by ASRS racks. A low Oxygen facility maintained at -5deg F.
2. Low bay picking and dispatch cold storage - this is a two story steel structure with 60’-0” height and plan area of 125,000sf. Special steel concentric braced frames are used to resist seismic forces. The composite floor is designed to support 250psf live load.
3. Offices, Technical support and Battery charging buildings – These are multi-story steel structures.
The final design is delivered through a Revit model. SMV coordinated the model with other disciplines throughout the design phase.
SMV provided complete design documents and helped during CA work.

New Toyota Dealership, WA, USA
(A PSM Project)
This is one of the largest Toyota dealerships on the West coast of US. This 93000sft facility, which SMV helped design, is under construction.
SMV is delighted to showcase construction progress photos with stages of tilt-up wall panel construction:
1. Preparing the tilt-up panels for concrete pour.
2. Finished panels.
3. Erection of the tilt-up panels.

New Toyota Dealership, WA, USA
(A PSM Project)
This is one of the biggest Toyota dealerships on the West coast of US. The facility includes car sales, delivery, car display, full service, quick lube, car wash, parts, offices, support and a cafe with a total area of over 93,000sft. The structural system consists of load bearing tilt up concrete panels, steel frames and open web steel joist for roof. Mezzanine floor is framed with steel concrete composite floor. Seismic resistance is provided with a combination of tilt panel shear walls and ordinary steel moment frames. Revit is used to provide detailed BIM and construction documents. SMV helped throughout the project with design and BIM.
‘DARIGOLD’ Dryer Rebuild WA, USA
The project was carried out in two phases. Phase 1 consisted of vertical expansion and seismic up-gradation of 7 story steel framed Dryer with precast cladding. SMV was involved in thorough conditions assessment of the existing structure before commencing work on the vertical expansion of the steel and precast structure. Expansion and retrofit, including foundation work, was carried out with most of the equipment in place.
Phase 2 consisted of 20,000 sft expansion of an existing warehouse. All elements of this structure have been designed as precast members i.e. wall panels and double tees at roof have been designed considering the dual action of lateral force resisting and gravity load bearing system. SMV provided complete design documents and provided support during CA work.
Staybridge Suites, WA, USA
SMV helped PSM Engineers in providing structural engineering services for this 120 room hotel with total area of 1,35,000sft. Hotel includes full service meeting, fitness and recreational spaces including indoor swimming pool. The building has a combination of four wood stories above the main concrete level and three wood stories above two concrete levels. The whole site is underlain with two stories of underground parking garage. SMV was involved from schematic design to the completion of the project including construction administration.

THE SIGNATURE, GIFT CITY, GANDHINAGAR
This 16 storey, 3.75 lakh sft commercial building, is located on banks of Sabarmati in GIFT (Gujarat International Finance Tech-City), Gandhinagar, India. This reinforced concrete structure, on a raft foundation, has a podium slab over an underground parking basement. Centrally located shear wall core is used to resist earthquake loads.
Team of SMV Engineers and Halvorson & Partners have been appointed by GIFTCL as Proof Check Consultant (PCC) to review and approve structural design of this project. Our team carefully evaluated structural design and drawings by developing independent structural model and checking critical element designs. We guided the design team in addressing critical structural issues concerning safety and performance of the building. Interactive and comprehensive reporting resulted in achieving challenging schedule and timely completion of the approval process.
WORLD TRADE CENTER, GIFT CITY, GANDHINAGAR
SMV Engineers along with Halvorson & Partners of USA have been appointed by the GIFT City as a Proof Check Consultant to peer review and approve structural design of this 1.35 M sq ft mixed-use project proposed in India’s first smart city GIFT (Gujarat International Finance Tech-City), Gandhinagar. The project includes four towers per photo resting on a common podium with 2 underground parking levels.
Meeting challenging schedule, our team carefully evaluated structural design and drawings and guided design team in addressing critical design issues concerning safety and performance of the structures. Our interactive peer review approach and comprehensive reporting resulted in timely commencement of the construction.
Extending our International Horizon to Saudi Arabia
SMV will provide structural engineering services for Technology Incubator and Accelerators Complex in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia through PSM to our design partner H+P. This 385,000 SFT Complex will have two levels of underground parking with 5 buildings with varying height up to 8 stories above podium. SMV will also develop full BIM for the project.
Are we prepared for 7.9?
The Earthquake images show devastation in Nepal and India. Thousands of people lost their lives and many more injured; huge financial damage to the economy of Nepal; complete collapse of important monuments and heritage structures of Nepal. In such a Scenario are we ready as a nation, as a state, or as a community for a big disaster like 7.9 earth quake?
Many Structures in India are “non-ductile “structures e.g. brick and stone masonry structures. All structures built before 1970 are also very susceptible to severe damage even in smaller shaking. To understand importance of preparedness, take a case of Haiti Earthquake of Jan, 2010 (magnitude of 7.0) & Chile Earthquake of Feb, 2010 (magnitude of 8.8). Death toll in Haiti was 2.3 lakh where as in Chile it was only a few hundreds even though intensity of the earthquake in Chile was way more than Haiti. A simple reason is that Haiti was not ready for an earthquake, while Chile had learned from its past earthquakes and implemented proper mechanism to reduce the impact. After earthquake in 1985, Chile developed stringent buildings codes addressing seismic design and implemented it be awareness and enforcement. Chile also developed nationwide awareness about earthquakes. Haiti lacked all of that.
We are reactive to situations but not proactive. When it comes to disasters, we have to be proactive as individuals, as communities and more as a country to be prepared to face them and to minimize their impact. Some simple actions could be:
Make people aware about earthquakes, its consequences and how to be prepared.
Make building codes address building performances during and after earthquakes and enforce them strictly.
Retrofit existing important structures such as hospitals, schools, emergency shelters continuous operation during seismic event.
Design all new important structures for continuous operation level.
Strengthen monuments & heritage buildings.
Improve and strengthen infrastructure.
Implement program for removal of old non repairable structures.
Setup public private partnerships to implement changes.
Earthquakes cannot be prevented, but past earthquakes data can help our structural engineers design better structures to lessen the impact of earthquakes by saving lives and ensuring continuous operation of critical facilities to ensure help after earthquakes.
