Introduction
In the sterile and pretty boring, besides when it's holiday, halls of Westbridge Science Division tension wasn't unfamiliar. In fact, it always seemed to hum just beneath the surface. On one end stood Dr. Malcolm Whitlock - a silver haired, firm and sharp eyed man whose second language was sarcasm and a great bunch of mockery. He was respected, feared and sometimes outright avoided for his blunt tongue and so said sarcasm. But he didn't care.
And then there was prince charming, at least that's what the nurses called him. Damian Hart - the lab's golden boy. A charming young man who was hopelessly flirtatious and had a smile that made the nurses swoon and an ego big enough to fill the research wing. Where Malcolm saw discipline, Damian saw mischievous opportunities; where Malcolm valued silence and the quiet, Damian filled it with his confident banter and quick remarks.
The two men were opposites in every damn way possible - one grumbling and muttering into his black coffee about wasted time, the other leaning on lab counters, flashing his signature grin in a 10 miles radius. To outsiders, the dynamic was almost comical, no... It was comical. The grumpy, not old but older, scientist forced to endure the antics and schemes of the cocky young upstart. But beneath their clashes lingered something unspoken. Malcolm Whitlock carried the weight of years that Damian couldn't begin to imagine, secrets he guarded, and would never slip. And if Damian ever suspected there was more to Malcolm than sarcasm and black coffee.. Well, then he'd have one hell of a surprise.

Butter knives and wrinkles.
It was a cold morning, sprinkled with early morning snow. Signalling that the winter was just around the corner. One of those mornings you wished you could just lay in bed all day and do absolutely nothing. Sadly, Malcolm couldn't do that for multiple reasons, and one of them was work. And so he was. Working, well, not at the exact moment. Right now, he was standing by the printer waiting for it to do its job and enjoying the calm moment he had to himself. Which he knew would get disturbed any second now. It always did, and it was always by one specific man.
And as if right on cue- like clockwork set to maximum irritation and most definitely headaches and migraines - the lab door swung open with a cheerful whoosh and a familiar voice broke the silence. βMorning sunshine!β Damian said as he strode into the room, all bright eyes and blinding grins. He shrugged off his coat like he owned the damn place, which, he didn't, and enjoyed himself for a moment. βYou know-β He began, knowing damn well that Malcolm was already fed up with his bullshit, βmost people say that coffeeβs the best part of the morning. But I reckon it's my voice cutting through the silence like a warm knife through butterβ. βIf you were butter-β Malcolm muttered, eyes fixed on the printer as though glaring would make it finish faster, βthe entire lab wouldβve gone rancid by nowβ. Damian didn't hear him, and Malcolm didn't care. That just meant he wasn't about to endure another round of βbicker and headachesβ. Damian sauntered to the window and threw a wink at the passing nurses. Same damn move, same damn reaction. Malcolm's jaw tightened, his eyes darting up to the ceiling for a brief second while Damian did his thing, his same damn flirty routine that seemed to have every young female employee in the building swooning. He had to admit it was getting difficult to fight the urge not to punch him in the face. As Malcolm gave Damian a sidelong glare, he thought about how they should nail a sign to him saying βflirt with extreme caution - May cause heart palpitations and severe bouts of idiocy-induced attractionβ.
The sound of the printer finishing up pulled Malcolm back to the task at hand. As he collected the freshly printed documents, he silently scolded the printer for taking too long. Damian watched Malcolm cross the room, his frown deeper than ever. The man always seemed so bloody serious and tense, like he was perpetually grinding his teeth or had a stick shoved up somewhere unpleasant. βYou know, you're gonna get wrinkles if you keep making that face, Docβ he said teasingly from his stand by the window and crossed his arms over his chest, the action making his well-defined biceps flex and stand out even more. βRelax old man, try vibing for once ~β his voice smooth and face plastered with a cocky grin. Unnamused Malcolm sorted the documents inside a folder before he spoke "I've got a name, Kid-β He jammed the folder in the drawer with the rest βbesides, you've got work to do so get,to,it.β His tone was warning and eyes sharp, and he was most definitely fed up with prince charming over here. Yet Damian was unfaced by the tone and glare. He was used to them both. βI know your name Mal-colmβ. He purposely dragged it out, just for shits and giggles, and because he knew it would tick off Malcolm. βI just prefer the dramatic tension of not using it. Adds mysteryβ He winked and rolled his shoulders like he had all the time in the world. βAnd about that work..β He muttered as he sauntered over towards his station - it was more of a smooth and nonchalant glide - βIβll get to it.. right after I make sure nurse Clara doesn't need any help with her reports and samplesβ.
Malcolmβs eye twitched, just slightly, but Damian caught it nonetheless, and his grin widened while Malcolm's brows only seemed to furrow further.
