Ayame’s annoyance dies down as he pouts instead. “Whatever, I don’t expect you to understand anyway. I’d say it’s nice to be back but I’d be lying.” Not that he’s ever had a problem with lying. A sigh, “I can’t seem to get a single project done before winding up back here, and it appears my last place of employment just up and disappeared!”

“Gross.” Is his complaint for the moment. Then, “Where do you suggest? We can’t go to the kappa thing now, he’s liable to take a bite outta you, wormly as you are.”

“Grosssssss?!” There’s high offence in Ayame’s tone and then he’s coiling around Badou’s arm.”You’re so rude! I’m a ssnake not a worm! What were you planning on doing with the kappa’s anyway?” He huffs and it comes out as a hiss. “I don’t know, indoors somewhere. There’s no telling when I’ll change back.”

“It’s not that simple, but I’m glad you think it is. I’m good though, I never needed a birthday then and I don’t need one now. Besides, aren’t birthdays for kids or something? A little too late.”

Eugene spent over twenty years of his life without a birthday, he didn’t mind a few decades more. Besides, as much as Eugene loved the idea of celebrating himself… well this just wasn’t something he found much value in declaring for himself. He’d celebrate other’s birthdays as they come, but as for himself… well he’d just celebrate his life through theirs.

But the topic is easily dropped in exchange for something much more…

“… You know, I’ve been here for like five months of hell and that’s the weirdest thing I think I’ve ever heard. Congratulations: care to explain?”

“Oh I see.” Well, he tried. It didn’t seem like an easy topic and really he couldn’t imagine not celebrating his own birthday, because of course Ayame’s birth had been a gift tot he world. It didn’t matter if only two people came for the celebration, it was always a big one.

“Really?” Ayame questions the fact that this was apparently the weirdest thing this man has heard. “You must not be hanging out with very interesting people.” In all honesty as someone living with the curse it seemed so mundane compared to the people in the city with much more useful lives and abilities.He perks back up and smiles as he opens up his arms. “It may be more fun to show you, could I get a hug?”

You had just decided to curl up for the night, unable to focus on your studies due to the thoughts running through your head. But just as you were unable to focus, you were unable to sleep as well. You think back to the day that you met with Ayame for the first time in this city, likely the first time he’s seen you in months. And that’s what you did. You snapped at him, and between the lines told him that you didn’t want to hear anything about relying on others too much from him. 

It hurt him like you wanted it to. You didn’t think before you burned that bridge. 

Not long after you slip the note under his door though, there’s a knock on your door. You turn over to see him standing there. He asks if you can talk, and part of you wants to say no. You’ll just say something worse. You’ll just hurt him again. 

But you don’t say no. You nod. You sit up and wait for him to close the door behind him. 

“I meant it, what I wrote,” you say pulling your legs up to your chest after scooting over to give him room to sit on your bed. “I don’t want things to be like this between us. I really don’t. But I feel like every time we talk, it just… turns out wrong. I’m sorry.”

Ayame enters the room slowly. He sees Yuki sitting up in bed and feels silly for coming to disturb him but.. but he didn’t want things to end with a note. As wonderful as the note was. He wanted to hear it from his little brother, and he does, and as excited as he is he feels so much more clam and contented. There’s a small smile on his face as he nears the bedside and takes the offered seat.

“Thank you... I-” He pauses, and has to close his eyes a moment to take a breath. When he opens his eyes again he’s staring down at the carpet. “I’m sorry too.” The words are heavy, and then it releases a lot more than just that. “I’m sorry I wasn’t there for you when we were younger. I don’t want this strain between us, the truth is I hate our disconnect which is why I... I try so hard and only seem to push you further away...” Ayame trails off, there’s so much more he wants to say but he doesn’t want to be overwhelming.

“Nope. Never have celebrated a birthday, and never will. I guess you could say I’m quite the mystery.” Eugene snorted sardonically, “There weren’t any records of that sort of thing for me so it’s just a big blank.”

Anyways, it doesn’t bother him any. Not anymore. But he knows how weird it can sound from the outside, so he just offers a simple explanation and left it at that.

“I guess I have to ask you then: why is it that you have to believe in both?  Grew up superstitious or something?”

“I see.” An orphan then? It was a little sad but Ayame wasn’t the type to mention that. Instead he smiles, “Oh well then you have the luxury of choosing one! It could be your birthday today, or tomorrow, or perhaps on your favorite day? A memorable day. Just because there’s no official record of it doesn't mean you should miss out on celebrating your life! You could maybe even have some fun with it and change the date every year!”

It’s a great idea, Ayame sometimes told people it was his birthday when it wasn’t but in his case he knew it was untrue. Faced with the question his energy dies down a bit. “Oh, well I’ve been cursed by the spirit of the snake.” He answers matter-of-fact.
