SEAN YORO PAINTS HYPERREAL SEA LEVEL PORTRAITS ON HIS SURFBOARD

Using a surfboard, young Hawaiian artist Sean Yoro (aka Hula), paints murals while balancing on his board, placing his works just above sea level.

Rhythm is the regular repetition of beat, accent, or rise and fall in dance, music and language. The word comes from the Greek word rhythmos, meaning measured motion. In dancing, rhythmic patterns and variations are created by physical motions of shorter or longer duration and of greater or lesser emphasis. In music, rhythmic figures, and phrases come from an arrangement of tones, organized according to their duration and stresses, or accent. Rhythm is the most primitive element of music. Unlike the other elements, it can exist independently.

Using the Four Yardsticks

All performed challenges are measurable by some combination of the following:

- Speed/Time

- Cost

- On-spec/e[X]pec[TED] quality

- Positive yields

Peter Jensen, the child psychiatrist at Columbia University and father of five himself, acknowledges that the new discoveries about the continued change in the teenage brain, as well as evidence suggesting we learn best when exploring varied territory on our own, have changed his way of thinking, too. The still developing state of an adolescent's prefrontal cortex, Jensen believes, means teenagers don't always see the consequences of their actions and parents sometimes do need to step in--like a surrogate frontal cortex--to provide a dollop of foresight. And the best way to accomplish this is not necessarily with a jackhammer. With teenager number five, Jensen has learned to sit back a bit, give subtle nudges, hint at possible outcomes perhaps, and then let his daughter take her own newly connecting frontal lobes for a spin. 

Articulating SMART Performance Goals. People setting outcomes based on goals can benefit from using outcome-based goals can benefit from using the SMART acronym as a checklist of items that characterize goals that are specific and relevant (elegant), aggressive yet achievable, relevant to the challenge at hand, and time bound.

Specific: Questions "at what?" "for whom?" and "by how much?"

Measurable: Feedback, requires measurement. Metrics might be objective or subjective, as long as they are assessable.

Aggressive (yet Achievable): "A" is significant (aggressive=stretch). Achievable allows for a more sustained pursuit because most people will not stay the course for as long if goals are not credible. Setting goals that are both aggressive and achievable allows people and Organizations to gain all the advantages of stretch goals without creating illusions about what is possible.

Relevant: Goals must relate to the performance challenge at hand. This includes a focus on leading indicators, which are harder to define and riskier to achieve than the more commonly relied-on lagging indicators around financial performance (i.e. revenue, profits)

Time Bound: The final specific measure relates to time and answering the questions "by whom?" You CANNOT define success without knowing when time is up.

Lullaby

My mother's an expert in one thing:

sending people she loves into the other world.

The little ones, the babies---these

she rocks, whispering or singing quietly. I can't say

what she did for my father;

whatever it was, I'm sure it was right.

It's the same thing, really, preparing a person

for sleep, for death. The lullabies---they all say

don't be afraid, that's how they paraphrase

the heartbeat of the mother.

So the living slowly grow calm; it's only

the dying who can't, who refuse.

The dying are like the tops, like gyroscopes---

they spin so rapidly they seem to be still.

Then they fly apart: in my mother's arms,

my sister was a cloud of atoms, of particles--that's the difference.

When a child's asleep, it's still whole.

My mother's seen death; she doesn't talk about the soul's integrity.

She's held an infant, an old man, as by comparison the dark grew

solid around them, finally changing to earth.

The soul's like all matter:

why would it stay intact, stay faithful to it's one form,

when it could be free?
