The last things that Tony has contact with before he launches himself into what he knows is certain death are things he built. Things he built for himself, For his own needs, People haven’t ever been as kind to him as they should have been. Howard Stark sired Tony to continue a legacy and Tony learned young and early how to duck and weave and stay far from his father’s hand. People have wanted something from him his whole life. Munitions, money, the cache of his name. A night in his bed. His life in trade for power.

The one person Tony has always known he can rely on utterly is himself. His intellect. His skills. His innate courage and will to survive. The same skill and intellect that built the prototype of the armor he is wearing here. The same courage that has him flying into the portal. The same brilliance that engineered the intelligence of JARVIS into the suit.

So it’s fitting and right after all he has given and all that has been taken from him that the last thing Tony touches as he pushes up into darkness is the tower he built. And, as the explosion of the ship leaves him flash blind, terrified, dying and alone in a black void, the last thing he hears is something he built purely for himself. Not for money or to push forward the Stark name but for love. 

Specifically, to love him.

Tony isn’t a super soldier. He isn’t an assassin or spy. He isn’t a God or a scientist transformed by serums.He is just a man, a brilliant man but a man nonetheless. A civilian.He has no formal combat or counterintelligence training or been taught how to survive a kidnap situation. For three months he was held against hiswill. Trapped by a plan formulated by a man who Tony held as afather. He was taken from all he knew. From his home. His family. And was thrown by a weapon of his own design into a Lovecraftian nightmare. He was held at gunpoint. He was operated on, his body modified without his consent and without anesthesia. That deserves reiterating: without anesthesia. He was tied down, helpless, while men he didn’t know cut through his flesh: through muscle and through bone and modified his body. While he drowned in the cloying scent of his own blood and choked down bile and panic and blind, white hot terror. And all he could do was scream. He was held under water until his lungs burned with a brilliant red pain and his vision diminished and greyed out.

And yet he survived.

Because that is Tony’s superpower. He doesn’t quit. He doesn’t quit on his family. He doesn’t quit on his friends. He doesn’t quit on his commitment to keep people safe. He came out of that desert after being beaten, broken and tortured and he didn’t hide in his wealth. He didn’t retreat from the world. He stepped up when Fury asked. He gave of his time, his money, his resources. He shoved down his fear and panic and all encompassing daily pain and made damn good and sure that the people he was now in a team with, his new family were provided for.

Tony isn’t the ‘weak link’ that so many seem to feel. He isn’t a ‘whiny and entitled child’. Don’t paint him as the villain in upcoming events when the color of the palette they will be using isn’t even known yet. Tony has been through just as much pain and suffering and loss as all the other Avenger’s. His demons are just as real, just as valid and have teeth just as sharp. He may be just a man but he is every inch the hero that the rest of them are.

This. All of this. I think a lot of people in this fandom are trying to paint a picture that just isn’t there. Ah sure, he’s flawed, he has his issues, a tiger won’t change it’s stripes but on the flip side to that, he did a 180 in that cave. Up until then, he’d been a man who had been running. Running from responsibility, from attachment, from pain in his childhood, from the pain of losing his parents before he could ever, as a man, try and do his best to make things right, since it’s not the onus of a child to do something like that. But you don’t get to run forever, do you? He was slapped in the face with something real and sobering that would have killed most people.

That is his superpower. He survives.

Basically, I know it’s trendy for the marvel fandom to talk shit, but you’re mixing MCU Tony up with 616 Tony and honestly, they’re not the same person. We don’t even know what’s happening in Civil War yet and everyone’s already chomping at the bit to take a side when I don’t see a point to it. Even within the comics interpretation of Civil War, it was less about right and wrong and more about two men seeing things from different points of view through different lenses who couldn’t just sit down and talk about their differences, couldn’t discuss it without BOTH OF THEM resorting to drastic measures. When the dust settled, nobody had won, nobody had been “right”, it had all been a mess.

So really, you can all have your squeaky self righteous characters if that’s what suits you, but Tony Stark has always felt more real to me. More frankly how I’d deal with things than any other character. Because I too am not perfect. I think my morals are sometimes skewed. I think a lot about me is skewed, but I look at him and think, you know what? In spite of my fuck ups and my shitty nature, I can do something good. I can maybe even do something great, pull myself up out of the mud and do something RIGHT.

That’s why I take serious issue with this fandom reducing him to a joke or a punchline or making his trauma and pain less valid than certain other characters when this isn’t a contest. Pain is relative. Suffering isn’t a contest. And neither is strength and morality, all of this stuff is filtered through a lens of perception that differs. Consider that.
