More than one percent of all children born in the United States today have autism. Some people, whom we shall politely refer to as “squealing jackasses” (we have some far more impolite terms ready), blame vaccines for the rise in cases. The real cause of this supposed autism boom is the simple fact that it was first diagnosed in 1943, so we basically only just figured out autism is a thing. We sat down with several high-functioning autistic people and asked them what our readers should know about their condition. Here’s what they said…
6 Things People With Autism Would Like You To Know
snayl, how does this match up?
You ask me as if I’m some kind of expert. Ha ha?
To answer your question: pretty good, actually. In my experience, anyway. As you likely know, I’m not too comfortable with the term “high-functioning” (much of the time it’s attributed to people who aren’t non-verbal). One of my favorite writers about autism in general is Cal Mongomery, She is nonverbal, but her writing is eloquent and sophisticated. She has written much about assisted communication, and also addressed this high/low -functioning debate here back in 2005.
Another point of note: the one autistic individual who left the Autism Speaks board was John Elder Robison, arguably the most widely-known autistic person after Temple Grandin. His book, “Look Me in the Eye,” is a great read for anybody, IMO. In it, he describes how he worked with KISS, among other fascinating things.
If you really want to get upset about what a nightmare Autism Speaks really is, you can read this letter written by the Autistic Self Advocacy Network. It outlines numerous egregious acts committed by Autism Speaks, the evidence of which is supported by numerous source links.

More facts
just to add, Paul Boyd had diagnosed bipolar disorder. Despite having taken his meds for the day, on the eve on his murder Boyd mistook a patron for someone he knew at a restaurant, shouted at them, and then kneeled before him to apologize for his shouting. This incident resulted in a number of 911 calls whose callers recognized that he was showing signs of mental illness.
Two plain clothes Vancouver police arrived on the scene in an unmarked car in response to this 911 call despite no evidence of an assault having taken place. However, one of the officers reported that he saw a hammer in Boyd’s hand and, without identifying himself as a police officer, drew his weapon and ordered Boyd to drop the hammer and lie down, which he did.
In the meantime, two uniformed officers had arrived. Uniformed officer, Constable Lee Chipperfield, drew his weapon and began shooting. There were reports from the police, released to the media on August 14, 2007, that Boyd had begun swinging a bicycle chain with a lock attached after he struck the plain clothes officer. However, subsequent forensic DNA tests failed to show that he had been swinging this chain. Since there was no blood or hair on the chain, it is likely that this DNA resulted from the careless handling of the evidence after the incident—without being put into an evidence bag, it was thrown into the front seat well of the unmarked police car in which the injured officer had arrived at the scene.
Evidence presented at the Coroner’s Inquest revealed that in the 30 minutes that Boyd had spent on Granville Street prior to the arrival of the police, he had used no weapon and committed no assault nor shown any aggression other than loud shouting.
During a period of 80 seconds, Constable Chipperfield fired nine shots in total, with eight hitting Boyd. The killing was investigated by the Vancouver Police Department and their findings passed on to the Criminal Justice Branch of BC which decided not to prosecute Chipperfield.
THIS IS A EXAMPLE OF HOW MENTALLY ILL PEOPLE ARE TREATED BY POLICE.

Edit: I’ve been informed he’s not the creator, but he directed the title sequence.
I guess the stigma around mental illness isn't limited to the USA.

“Tell us five random facts about you and then pass this on to five of your favorite followers.” (haha, you’re assuming I have five favorites!)
I still have my action figures from childhood. No, I don’t still play with them.
I have two tattoos and plans for a third, but that one is contingent on a number of factors.
My first rock concert was Siouxsie and the Banshees on the Tinderbox tour, third row center. It was extraordinary.
I'm old enough to I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when I heard Kurt Cobain was dead, and neither the place nor the activity are the least bit interesting.
The cocktail of medications I take causes me to have mild nystagmus. I’d never heard of it either until my optometrist told me about it.
The tag didn't say they were supposed to be terribly interesting facts, just random ones, right?
I hereby tag fhillis, mecha-doctorzero, jazzwald, nsfchurch, and carefulickarusur2high.

Speaking of Ender's Game, how does one pronounce "hegemon"? I'm afraid to say it aloud because every pronunciation I come up with doesn't sound right to me.

I am beside myself about this web thing, on account of how I used to watch the original show on Saturday mornings -- because I AM JUST THAT OLD.
Not to mention this nod to the original by putting them, if temporarily, in THE ORIGINAL F@CKING COSTUMES:

Hey wise person! Your writing is lovely, and I love it, and it is wonderful. I am curious though, and thought you might know... Are there any guys that write Hartbig/Trinity fic, that you know of?
First of all - thank you very much, you’re sweet. =)
I do indeed know of a couple of guys that write/have written stories to do with the Trinity. There’s the lovely riebart (he’s written a Hartbig story based on the game ‘Thief’), and then there’s snayl (he’s written something featuring Mamrie and Tony Stark, I reckon). Not sure whether there is actual guy-written Trinity stories around - I don’t really read much stories anymore.
I doubt anyone’s accidentally stumbled over here, but you can find the implicated pieces of fiction over here since they aren’t a part of standard persona.
Jay is too kind to bundle me in with the likes of snayl's fiction alterego, he's a superstar and I am but a clump of interstellar dust in a pre-main-sequence state.
Wait wait wait, Monseur Riebart. While I certainly appreciate your kindness, I fear it is hyperbole of the highest order! If one were to use notes as the metric (I wish there were another), and if you are feeling charitable, then I am almost a peer of yours at best. But superstar? Hardly.
What I think is funny about all of this is that I am almost certain our dear hartorotica has unintentionally confused my twitter account with my Tumblr account... as anyone who may have looked will attest, I've posted no writings. It's like an episode of "Three's Company"!
One final note to hartorotica and her darling Anon: I know of at least one other male fic writer, a talented and prolific one at that, with an avid fanbase. However, he has not given me leave to "out" him, as it were, so I shan't. Which is unfortunate, because I think male-fanfictionists get a bad rap. Ask @hellohelbig (http://hellohelbig.tumblr.com) (I don't know why the at-sign thing didn't work there).
MY PEOPLE.
