THE HISTORY OF NEW MEDIA
The Evolution of New Media
In our world where technology has been prominent, people have always relied on communication to strengthen their relationships. Interacting with friends and family across long distances has been achieved through media. Media has been convenient in peopleâs lives today and looking back to how it was developed says a lot about how the world changed since technology has been adopted.
Tracing back to the roots of media, it was said that the earliest methods of communicating across great distances used written correspondence delivered by hand from one person to another. In other words, they used letters. These letters were sent through postal services which started in 550 B.C.
In 1792, the telegraph was invented. This allowed messages to be delivered over a long distance faster and was considered a revolutionary way to convey news and information.
In 1890, the telephone was invented. A year after, in 1891, the radio was invented. Telephone lines and radio signals enabled people to communicate across great distances instantaneously.
In the 1940s, computers were invented. A machine that was used as a medium to use media efficiently. Â In the 1960s, the earliest form of the internet was developed. Following a decade later, in the 1970s, Advanced technologies have been developed and the decade was known as the âAge of Technologyâ.
In the 1980s, New media started. Where means of communication was achieved through digital technologies such as the Internet. From then on, other media were developed. Google was created in 1998. Facebook was created in 2004 and Youtube in 2005. And in 2010, new forms of social media were developed.
The Media has influenced individuals on their way of living especially today that technology is widely used. It has helped people live an efficient and convenient life.
We know that media, in all its forms, is the collective term for every outlet we use to communicate information. This can be seen everywhere, as wherever we are, wherever we go - there is information.
As you are reading this right now, you are using media to access information: Tumblr is a form of media. The internet is a part of media, but there is so much more than just the internet.
Join me as we explore the various stages and forms media has been represented as, as we seek to understand how and why media has come to be through its evolution in this timeline:
Personally, I believe media shouldn't just be referred to as a singular, linear phenomena - as opposed to the actual straight line my timeline shows, but rather as the complex evolution of human means of transmitting information:
Media evolved alongside us. The moment we began to think and share ideas was the moment media first started to take shape: as the simple markings and drawings our ancestors wrote to represent what they thought and to show to others what they wanted to mean. The markings on the wall soon turned into letters on tablets as we learned to write what we spoke, and what we wrote soon turned into mass articles of information that was intended to be shared to the public in far and wide-reaching messages and so on.
As humanity began to innovate and invent, newer outlets for media was created - from the inventions made in the Industrial Period to the initiatives founded by early innovators and pioneers of digital technology. As we seek new ways to better ourselves and our world, media improves alongside us as it has been with us since the start in humanity's endeavor for advancement.
New Media is just another term for media's use in this stage of human history, as we begin to share and actively take part in the world's events and become more interconnected as people through the internet and in social media.
Movies such as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) and Easy Rider (1969), reflected the youth driven culture, such as fashion, music and social values of the decade. Commercial radio during the 1960âs tailored to the youth, providing music that was upbeat, and popular in the charts.Â
In the 1970s, reporters took stronger roles in uncovering news. They revealed corruption in the government that lead all the way to the president. In another case, the Pentagon Papers started a legal battle between the powers of the government to protect its secrets and the pressâ freedom to publish information for the public good.

The â90s was a decade of enormous disruption, the axis on which the old world ended and a new one began. Often a vehicle for affectionate nostalgia, not just a decade that gave us Kurt Cobain and âThe Simpsons:â Its political events were deeply transformative, and the thread that ran through them all was technology.
YouTube came out in 2005, creating an entirely new way for people to communicate and share with each other across great distances. By 2006, Facebook and Twitter both became available to users throughout the world. These sites remain some of the most popular social networks on the Internet
As of August 2009, Facebook was the most popular online social network for American adults 18 and older.

The Evolution of Media
The History of New Media
We are at the very beginning of a transformative communications revolution where technology has enabled the "un-tethering" of the masses from fixed communications points. The cell phone, lap top computer and wireless Internet have made communications mobile and persistent.
In this timeline, we are going to discuss the evolution of media generation to generation. This include how media is used during the Pre- Industrial age, Industrial age, Information age. and Electronic age.
Media Throughout The Ages
Media is a tool used to disseminate information or a way where information can be passed by the communicator to the information receivers. Some researchers discovered that media subsist even before the humans existed. It was represented by some signs during the ancient times. Communication was easily achieved since they did not convey complex information.
In previous times, information used to pass through word of mouth or letters written on a piece of paper, or in ancient times, scribbled on stone tablets and the Egyptian papyrus platform. However, when urgent matter needed some solution a turnaround came. This brought the development of new strategies to communicate. Innovation to this effect was thereby to take place.
The advancements in technology played a big role in making the message faster to be transfered. As mentioned, the urgency and speed of message transfers brought rise to the development of new strategies to convey the messages. Letters were introduced in the seventeenth century to aid in this process. Telephone was then introduced to people. This was later advanced by the introduction of the cellular phones and the internet.
Media evolution has continued to wonder many on the planet. Many researchers have assured that more advancement is still in wait. It is important to embrace this evolution as it makes livelihood more interesting and informative.
The world of technology continues to change bring many changes. It can be quite confusing for students, especially when it comes to the news media. People hear news over the radio, television, and even their computers. Most technologies described as ânew mediaâ are digital, and often have characteristics of being networkable, dense, compressible, interactive and impartial. Examples are the internet, websites, computer multimedia, games, CD-ROMs and DVDs. Young people are attracted to the easy means of getting information with internet based terminals or hand phones which provide them information of their choice anytime, anywhere.
Both media platform serve the same target audience be it online, in print or broadcast. As mentioned, each form of media has an objective which is to disseminate a particular message and keep the masses informed. However, for those whom purposes resemble each other, they have same target audience to cater to and thus, garnering the same audience. They key success, if new media is to ever succeed traditional media, is advanced technology in internet. Although social networking through new media has increased crime rates, it is one of the shortcomings that can be eradicated. With technology, new media has definitely exceeded the abilities of traditional media as an advertising alternative and smoothened the process of gathering concrete information for news articles.
Old is gold. But that does not mean that new changes should be overlooked or even cast aside. It will be beneficial for RTM to tap ways to respond to the global financial crisis and changes in demand, so as to enhance its role in society.Â
THE HISTORY OF NEW MEDIA
Timeline of Media would help us know the history of technology, of how people before deliver their message to the people they missed, people who they want to send information. Before, they were just painting in caves to record or draw the series of events. As time passes by, typewriters and printing press were invented for everyone who wants to print information for everyone. Until such time Electronic Age came, computers were discovered that has essential use to store information. Presently, The New Media has been discovered this is the new form of communicating especially in virtual world by the use of internet. This describes as content available on-demand of internet and e-gadgets.
