It took me 30 years to notice this:

When John Smith first enters the movie, he has his weapons crossed over his back like so:

By the end of the film, he has been wounded, and now Thomas carries the weapons thus:

Indicating that Thomas has sort-of grown INTO Smith, and will now assume his leadership responsibilities. I’ve loved this movie ever since it came out in 1995, and I only just now noticed that.
