Honestly, I love it when characters relapse. When someone who’s gotten over their anger issues falls into a situation so out of their depth they fall back on their old habits. When someone who’s learned to open up becomes a recluse again in order to cope with something outside their control.

There’s just something so horrible, so toxic, about watching a character grow and then slip back into their old selves in order to cope, bc you know they still care, that they’re the same inside, but watching them hurt so hard they don’t know what else to do brings a sense of catharsis.

#astarion for real #act 1 hes putting on a front bc its all he really knows to do #his goal to get close to someone by playing the flirt so that theyre less likely to dump him on the side of the road and leave him #hopefully he can persuade someone to help him use his newfound freedom to kill cazador #by act 2 he starts opening up more about cazador as part of his persuasion and request for help #but time and time again you and/or the party keep treating him like a person #astarions trying to convince you of cazadors monstrous actions and abuse #but everytime hes met with compassion directed at him #like obviously the party grows to hate cazador but theyre also listening to astarion and asking him how hes dealing with it #they wanna make sure that hes okay and if he needs help on a personal level #through treating him like a person he starts to actually open up and become his genuine self and makes legitimate friendships #by the end of act 2 theres no more manipulation. hes confident that by being open that his friends will have his back #then you enter act 3 and all roads for astarion lead to confronting cazador #the man who ruined his life and tormented him for 200 years #and hes scared! who wouldnt be? he literally has a debuff while in cazadors castle bc of his fear #and thats when he slips right back into his manipulative ways bc hes terrified #you can tell him that you just want him to be happy #and he states that you can help make him happy by helping him usurp cazador and take his place #unless you havent been paying attention doing that would just be continuing on the cycle of abuse #astarion would become just another cazador. lying and manipulating for his own gain #astarions backed up into a corner here and this is him returning to his old methods bc its what he feels would work best
