[Batman: TAS] Clockwork, Pt. 1

Summary: To say the Clock King was pleased to see Hamilton Hill lose his bid for re-election would be an understatement - but suddenly nothing in Gotham is on time anymore, and he has to choose the lesser evil. Characters: Temple Fugate, Hamilton Hill  Rating: K    

A/N: Happy birthday, @vampirenaomi​! If you wondered about my radio silence these days, this was why. I was hoping to get the entire thing done by today, but I couldn’t make it. Will do my best to get the second and final part done by Christmas! (Also, little heads-up for everyone: the plot bunny for this thing actually hit me a long time ago and I promise the election fraud plotline in it has nothing to do with the insanity currently going on in the States.)

“Freeze!”

The order comes a quarter of a second after the first cop reaches the roof, predictable as the stroke of midday that will follow in precisely twenty-five seconds. The Clock King estimates it will take him exactly another fifteen seconds to reach the ledge, at which point he will have ten more to turn and throw in a mocking comment before his ride arrives. 

Excellent. His plan has been running as smoothly as sand in an hourglass.

“I said freeze!”

Temple Fugate entirely ignores the order and keeps walking to the ledge, pocketing his watch and twirling his cane in his free hand. It is an unspoken rule in Gotham, it seems, to do anything but freeze whenever you’re told to. It only occasionally works - not in a pattern he’s been able to reliably discern, to his annoyance - when it’s Batman to give the order. Or, well, Mr. Freeze, for reasons that should be quite obvious.

An interesting fellow, that one. Intellectually gifted - he wouldn’t mind conversing with, provided that he leaves his freezing gun at the door. Fugate generally pays little mind to his colleagues, even less after having to endure the indignity of being referred to as the White Rabbit by Mr. Tetch - a comparison that he found nothing short of insulting, because he is never late. Not anymore.

Not since the one time he was late and lost everything. But he’s getting it back, one timepiece at a time. The one he just took back from the museum is a priceless one, which he acquired by sheer luck only months before he was forced to sell every single piece he ever collected to pay–

“Stay where you are!”

What was the original thought that led to the creation of this character? For Shadow!

Pretty sure it was something along the lines of "I really need a powerful rebel that works for Aku ..." It was that, or I figured Aku had someone else running the show since he didn't seem to be doing much of it in Season 5 and thought about his organization. Then I scraped some characteristics from some other longstanding OCs in other universes and cobbled them together. Shadow is usually my place holder name, but since I didn't have anything published that used the name, it just stuck.

Are there any motifs or symbols associated with the character? How are they represented, in their design, personality or in some other way? - for the three generals (Shadow, Ophion, and Magnus)

They don't necessarily have any motifs or symbols that are coming to mind. The closest would be their unique Aku emblem that they and their underlings wear (that and the colors). Each general also has one color associated with Aku (so black, red, green, or white)

Shadow: Purple (originally navy blue, and pink in Da Capo) and black. Shadow's emblem, as described by Devin: their insignia was essentially a crude drawing of Aku if two claws had been used to make it.

I don't think I've shared it here, but here's Shadow and their emblem. @gravity-what drew this for me for Christmas last year and I love they brought Shadow to life! (A lot of OCs just exists as vague entities in my head, so I love that Shadow now has a face!)

Ophion: Green and blue (stole blue from Shadow since the previous general was green and white). Vixonus describes his insignia as:  a more refined rendition of Aku, one that captured an all knowing expression in a sleek manner with the silver-blue design on an Aku-green backing. It was supposed to be studious, but most of those that sported the insignia Magnus' army wore found it to be pretentious.

Magnus: Red and gold (Devin definitely jokes that his army is fast food colored). Magnus' insignia matches his bolder personality and is a thick lined gold drawing with a swirl behind it to represent the powerful arura of the demon.

My original goal once Shadow was created and given the rebel persona of Vile was to have eight other characters be their close circle of rebels based on the Mega Man X mavericks in the first game. It's been a while since I had the thoughts, so I don't remember all the order of characters, but BK and Devin were probably first (Boomer Kuwanger and Sting Chameleon respectively) and Freeze as Chill Penguin. Lopez I heavily stole from Launch Octopus, but specifically the Maverick Hunter X version since that Launch Octopus talked about art and being beautiful. Lopez highly appreciate art even if he doesn't create it, and swims solely because of how graceful and beautiful it feels. His work was dictated because of Launch Octopuses missiles. I knew I wanted him to be friends with Shadow (all the eight rebels are decently close to Shadow) and then figured it would be really funny if he also loved Shadow and was jealous that BK is marrying them because he never thought it was an option. It's more of a joke about the jealousy now, although he does deeply care for Shadow. Again, it's just funny that when people talk about Lopez, they talk about the three things he loves: his husband, Shadow, and his job.

I had, in earlier iterations, wanted him to be more of a romantic, and ship other people in a sense. He's so happy to hear about others and their relationships when it's positive. In some of the older stories I abandoned, he had a side gig as a wedding officiant.

#11 for Devin!

11) Is there any existing character from other media that your character resembles? Was the resemblance intentional or was it a coincidence?

So for a bit, I was worried Devin looked like a version of Scaramouche with a green coat, because in a side RP, Francis develops feelings for Devin and comments on some of the similarities (both into music, super tall, tend to run when the going gets tough). Devin is more goofy and less motivated to do anything for the most part and stands apart. Later, another friend mentioned Devin reminded them of Vash. Now, I had never seen Trigun at that point BUT I had a Vash action figure I picked up at a yard sale a long time ago. I found out after I had gotten rid of it (because it was only like $1) who the character was and it was such a no-nonsense intense pose, that I was like "Devin can't possibly be like Vash! I don't think he's that serious when he's serious." And then I saw actual clips ... Okay, Devin is very Vash like, and that did inspire some of the way he flails during fights now ... So it was very unintentional, but pretty funny.

Color scheme and weapon, he does intentionally represent the Riddler because they were dating (Devin was originally a Arkham-verse AU), so that's why he has a green coat and the question mark staff as his main weapon, as a tribute to Eddie.

I don't usually have specific playlist for characters, but I'll have playlists for the universe I'm thinking of. There are some songs I associate with Devin because of how he uses them. The most important is Queen's greatest hits. He is a cover band in the Musician AU and also uses this in other universes to try and get close to Scaramouche. His go to is "Bohemian Rhapsody" for Scaramouche and he teases Shadow with "I'm in Love with My Car." "Renegade" by Styx is something he teases Shadow with because it sort of tarnishes their name (Shadow retaliates with "Inside the Fire" by Disturbed).

A bit of a fun fact: if you ever see Devin singing something in the RP or other stories, it's probably because I was obsessed with a song and because he's from mostly current day, he can enjoy the same thing.

a feast of all your muse's favorite foods is laid out in front of them. what's on the menu? - Francis?

Nothing spicy (which in bot terms means acidic) for sure! Francis can't tolerate that at all.

He has a preference for sweet things. There's a bit of a preference for the softer metals and silicone treats, but he's good with any variety. He's also open to trying new things, so it's going to be a wide variety of all sorts of sweets, from the typical metals to the more synthetic type food that mimics food for organics.

Quality-wise, it's probably a grade higher than medium, but not top of the line like Scaramouche would demand. He can only tolerate so much of the higher quality and by Aku, he wants to at least sample everything!

(And I know this question is asking about the menu, but he's also going to want extra plates and food served for his friends as well since he wouldn't want to eat at this feast all by himself. He loves sharing the wealth)

what does your muse collect, if anything? - Shadow

What don't they collect?! Although they do have specific things they tend to steal collect.

If we're talking physical items: clothing/weapons from bounties they took out, general weapons especially rare ones, alcohol from people they don't like (mostly from Regan, but also LC in AUs where they interact), fingers from those they defeat (Francis will start this trend in Da Capo), weapons that were used on them and not removed after battle.

On the more abstract/less concrete side: favors, injuries (for information on how certain actions impact the physical body. Freeze hates this gathering style), souls (it's nutritional), anything that Magnus wants to lay claim to, data/knowledge on everything, titles that are actually insults (their official title is "the God forsaken child born of the bastard son of a hundred maniacs"), rebel allies.
