Time Displaced Bobby Drake

To say that Marcus was detail-oriented would be an understatement. He was precise and errors were a dime a dozen. Those errors that did manage to sprout up were fixed in a moment’s notice - or at least, he tried to. There were some errors that needed more consideration and work, will. A lost wallet needed neither of those things. 

The wallet had missed his back jean pocket by a hair, thus causing it to slip and fall to the concrete sidewalk behind him. For he human, he would have continued on his merry way to the next booth and onward until he realized he no longer had his wallet. But he could feel the weight error and promptly turned to see the leather flap in the hand of a child. Well, adolescent was more apt, teenager on the money, but to him the boy was a child. He said nothing as he looked from the boy to the wallet in his hand. A mere moment passed them from when the wallet first fell.

Bobby felt like he was being followed. It was probably nothing, probably stupid and he was being paranoid, scared after reading too much about NOVA. He’d be fine if his friends were with him but... he had no clue where they were and the District still felt odd to him so he’d gone into the city solo and now regretted it; acting jumpy and worried at every turn or loud noise.

He was trying to keep a close watch on everything so when he saw the huge guy a few paces ahead of him drop his wallet, Bobby quickly picked it up, ready to call for the man to stop but, by the time he looked up the guy was already facing him; he must’ve realised he’d dropped it. “Wow, most people don’t notice a missing wallet so quickly.” he chuckled, standing it up fully and offering it back, “Here ya go Mister, I-” a loud ‘bang’ had Bobby nearly jumping a foot in the air and against the nearest wall, immediately thinking it was NOVA coming for him... instead it was a car backfiring. And he was still holding the guy’s wallet, now against his chest where both arms had gone protectively. “S-sorry.” he mumbled, stepping forward and offering the wallet back again.

Peter clapped his hands together silently and pressed, already slightly exasperated with the situation. This was past Bobby. As in, past Bobby. This was Bobby, but from the past. How was that possible? Maybe Peter was staring. “You were meant to… who dropped you here? And how? And help Scott with what?”    

“Oh,” came Peter’s response, as if that cleared everything up. “Yeah, that’s me. I’m dating that knucklehead. Did he say anything weird about me? Anything that seemed totally out of the norm - other than swinging around in a red and blue spandex suit and fighting other people in spandex suits. And occasionally furry costumes.”

Bobby waited a few seconds, “Take your time. I know it’s weird.” he said, twiddling his thumbs, he could actually be a little patient when he had to be, even if he didn’t like it. “Uhh, my friend Hank, from this time, who apparently is a big blue fuzzy fella.” Boy he wondered how his hank was taking that little spoiler, “I dunno, future Hank and the professor wouldn’t tell me, only my Scott knows.”

“Uhh umm, n-no nothing at all. I mean I uhr, it was nice meeting him, he was nice. Told me never to keep sauce with me.” he added with a shrug, “It was more cause you’re... y’know, and you’re-” he threaded his fingers together and held them up, “With Johnny. Y’know? And after I had a talk with grown up me I kinda admitted to being, y’know, so I’m just trying to deal with that, y’know?” He’d said y’know too many times... “Who’re you fighting that wears a furry costume?”

RJ felt a little more in control of the situation when Bobby stepped in, glad that he, at least, seemed like he knew what to do with a little kid. Was this kid small enough to carry? RJ figured he probably could carry him, but he seemed pretty intent on walking on his own. Shit, he had been put in charge of a child for no more than half an hour and he was already questioning everything. RJ was terrified of fucking anything up; it all had to be perfect, the residual fear that HYDRA training had given him still lurking in the back of his head.      

“Right.” RJ nodded once. The little boy looked up at Bobby and clutched onto RJ’s pants a little tighter. Will you come too? the kid asked, looking up at Bobby with wide eyes, and RJ immediately caught Bobby’s gaze with a pleading look of his own. All he needed to do was get this kid across the bridge to where his group home was gathering. He wondered if this was how it felt to be a hero—like terrible responsibility, like terrifying weight. RJ decided in that moment he wasn’t meant to be a hero.

Bobby felt he was pretty good with kids, more than once he’d had to yank one out of harms way, keep them safe and (almost as important) calm until the actual police arrived to get them back to their parents. This situation was no different really and he’d just have to multitask while he helped out, easy. or so he liked to tell himself. “Sure I will! This bridge is made of ice, and I’m Iceman, so I’m the safest person you could be with! Y’know, if you let my friend RJ carry you, Jimmy, we’d be there even faster! He’s real strong and can run super fast!” Bobby looked up at RJ and grinned, hoping the other would get the hint and run with it to make the kid cooperate. 

And the sooner this kid was on the other side of the bridge, the sooner he’d be safe and that’s one less civilian to worry about. “So what do you say? Let RJ give you a piggy back and you hold on real tight?” he grinned and the child, still looking perfectly at ease while a hand stretched out behind him continued to blast powder snow down the bridge, making the way a little less slippy for the people crossing.

RJ’s eyebrows shot up as Bobby spoke, still wrapping his head around the fact that the nerdy boy from the roller rink was not only an X-man, but also from a different time period altogether. He opened and closed his mouth a couple of times before he spoke. “Um. Ok,” he said, looking down at the little boy who had taken to now hugging RJ’s leg, and RJ looked back up at Bobby with a somewhat pained expression. It was clear that RJ didn’t really know what he was doing with little kids. 

He looked up and down the bridge. “Hey, Jimmy, you see all this?” he asked, patting the little boy once on the shoulder. “My friend made this whole bridge just for us. You think you can make it across?” His eyes flicked up towards Bobby on the word friend, and the thought crossed his mind that Bobby might not have considered them to be friends at all, that the affinity between them was just in RJ’s head. He pressed his lips together, as if he was trying to physically avoid any more slips of the tongue like that.

Bobby’s grin was wide and his eyes a little manic, okay he was nervous. RJ was one of the few who’d thought he was a normal guy, maybe he wouldn’t like him anymore? Maybe he didn’t like mutants at all? Or maybe his life was just too nuts and he didn’t wanna be around him anymore, Bobby could understand that. His gaze followed RJ’s down to the little kid and he grinned, waving in a friendly manner, kids were fun, he liked them and it was showing RJ didn’t really know how to handle this.

Friend. Yay! Things were salvageable! Even if he were only saying it to keep the kid calm it gave him hope. “That’s right Jimmy!” Bobby grinned, hopping close and bending his legs to be the same height as the little boy, “This bridge is gonna get you away from the nasty man in the city who we’re gonna go stop! So you gotta be a little brave and get across for us, okay? My friend ain’t gonna let anything happen to you.” he grinned at the boy, then back up at RJ. “Right?”

RJ did better in crises than most people. His life had been one extended crisis until now (one of the many reasons why RJ was having such a hard time adjusting to his new, civilian life) and the return of chaos was comforting to him. He had been working at the roller rink when the Joker’s face was plastered across their screens, and after hurriedly closing the place down, he set about making sure his place was secure before making his way down to the community center down the block to help evacuate people. 

The ice bridge, he supposed, just got filed away with all the other weird things that happened to him in his life, but he hadn’t expected to see a familiar face actually powdering the bridge with snow as he held the hand of a little boy from the group home a couple of streets over. Without even realizing it, RJ had become a part of the new home he carved out for himself. He squinted at the man spraying snow from his fingertips and gasped. “Holy shit,” he said, blinking a few times at the other boy before turning to the child clutching his fingers. “Don’t swear.”

Okay, it was official, he was awesome in the future! Even in his wildest dreams he never could’ve imagined he had the power to make something like this! This bridge was damn huge! And older him didn’t even seem to be breaking a sweat while he was working one up just trying to get his power snow over it all. Sure it wasn’t the most stable of things but it had more grip than pure ice and they didn’t have a lot of time to go looking for other solutions right now.  

He was redoing the powder near the front of the bridge when a voice caught his attention and he jolted around, “RJ!?” he asked, eyes going wide, “Uhh... Hi!” he waved a free hand while the other continued to spray snow, from his body, which was also made of ice. Crapbaskets. “I uhh, I guess I got some explaining to do huh?” he asked lamely, giving the kid he was with a wave too, which was promptly returned. “I’m a mutant, with the X-Men... I’m Iceman. Well, Iceman from fourteen years ago, that’s Iceman from now.” he pointed to his older self who was a dot in the distance finishing up the bridge, “That’s a long story.”

“It’s got nothing to do with the sauce, man. Just don’t carry it around like an accessory. Not to mention,” he shuddered visibly, “it’s just gross. Don’t do it. Trust your friend Johnny, because on this I would not steer you wrong, even for a joke.” He was incredibly glad that his normal Bobby had found a partner in Kurt, but Kurt also wasn’t exactly the most traditional beau on the planet, either. He was blue, he had a tail, and…two toes? Three toes? Sock sauce was probably the least of his concerns. Baby Bobby still didn’t have to commit that atrocity himself.

The enthusiasm for his car immediately had Johnny grinning. “She’s a good one. Not my best, but still a beauty.” Once he’d started the engine, he pressed the gas to rev the engine loud enough to be appreciated. “I have enough,” he agreed, “but I’m not giving somebody else credit for this. I restored the car.” It was the one skill he had that he had full confidence in, really.

“Okay, okay!” Bobby held up his hands, “I’ll leave the sauce carrying to the restaurant people.” He could always keep some in his bag instead. But then, what if he didn’t have a bag with him? Ugh, questions for later. “Okay, I’ll trust you.” His older self had vouched for this guy, literally set them up to spend some time together, so surely he should value his advice? Even if advice on sauce wasn’t what he’d expected. Thinking on it, he wondered when stuff like that might come up again. His stomach went into knots just thinking about it.

“You have more than one!?” Bobby asked, eyes going wide, “That’s amazing. Can I drive on the way back?” he had his license (took a few tries but he got nervous during exams) but it wasn’t like he had with him now. “You fixed it? Wow. You should meet my friend Scott... I mean, the Scott who’s here... if he still fiddles with bikes. Cause my one does.” he bit the inside of his cheek a little, he really missed his friends.

“Things aren’t always what they seem like, Bobby. What is it that people say…” he let out a long sigh and raked his hand back through his hair, “no spoilers.” He had no idea what revealing a bunch of information about the ‘future’ would do to the timeline, if it even mattered. It was probably cracked enough just through the process of allowing Bobby to stand in front of him at eighteen. 

It wasn’t as if he’d forgotten how energetic Bobby was, considering he was still like that, but it did make it difficult to think. If he was going to come up with a plan it was already clear that he wouldn’t be able to do it while trying to explain why their lives had happened the way they happened. There had been occasions where even he didn’t know. In the middle of living it, he’d wondered how they’d ended up in some of the situations that had transpired, why things had happened that way, why they couldn’t be different. It wasn’t like he had a wealth of answers. 

“It’s okay. Just try to calm down. Nobody’s sending you back until we figure out what’s even going on and whether or not the others are here like you said.” Whatever they had to do to send him home, Scott had no idea if it was a process that could (or should) be repeated. They’d be dead in the water if they sent Bobby back alone and still had four more out-of-time teenagers to contend with. “Just tell me what Hank said to you. Or if you have any idea where he might be.”

Bobby huffed, “Great. So I can’t look anything up while I’m here in case I ruin time or something?” What was he supposed to do? Wander around with his eyes closed until they managed to get this sorted out? “Can you at least tell me we’re like, safe and stuff? Are you happy?” Bobby, despite being an annoyance to Scott whenever he could, really wanted him happy, it seemed like he’d been smiling less and less recently too.

“Okay... Okay.” Bobby tried to calm down but he still tapped his fingers anxiously against his knee and one hand had iced up the wrist. He caught sight of it and made a whining noise, shaking his hand a few times as if that would help it get back to normal. He’d never been any good under stress, especially when it as the kind of stress he couldn’t punch or blast with a snow front. This definitely fell under that category. “I can’t leave’em behind cause I know they’d never leave me. We’re a team, even know right?” he couldn’t help ask, despite Scott’s ‘no spoilers’ warning.      

“We were in the gardens of the school training, Warren was being a butt and Hank was helping me get a handstand down... You and Jean were, y’know, doing stuff and then there’s this flash of blue light and a furry blue guy steps out. We get ready for a fight but he says something and Hank goes all pale, anyway it was something only Hank would know to prove they’re the same person.” Bobby shrugged, Next thing ya know Future Hank is taking my Scott and the Professor into a room and the Professor blocked Jean from listening in.” he pouted.

“Be quiet, child. You always talked more than there was any reason for. Who do you think built these walls?” He made a gesture toward the great metal structure that created the perimeter around all the parts of District X that the ocean didn’t touch. “Who do you think repurposed all of these buildings? Scott Summers? Perhaps your older self?” Nearly every building that had not been created from the ground up by residents had been a warehouse that he’d dismantled and recreated as something they could use - dormitories, businesses, whatever it might be. “I did. I suggest that you grow up quickly and start using your eyes and head a little more efficiently.”

The mention of Charles did sting. His absence was something Erik mourned, a pit in his stomach. There would never be another man like Charles Xavier and the world was not better without him, even if their relationship had always ran hit and cold. He was irreplaceable. His students’ understanding of him had always been simplistic - a great failing on his friend’s behalf, and one that had eventually cost him his life. “I have a dream of my own, boy. It begins with the protection of mutantkind. That is exactly what I’m doing.”

“Yea well that’s one of my skills in life like yours is being a giant turd!” he snapped back, still holding up his hands defensively, you couldn’t trust Magneto, the guy’d been fighting them all tooth and nail and most of the time they barely ‘won’ so much as survived and stopped other people dying, he’d never faced the guy on his own and really didn’t want to... But then he actually started listening. “Huh?” he asked, quickly looking back at some of the buildings, “Well... Say I might believe that, what’re you doing helping us? You’ve tried to kill me and my friends! A lot! When did you become one of the good guys?” And why hadn’t friggin current time him decided to mention this terrifying fact!?      

“Okay Martin-Luther-Mutant, that’s original.” he deadpanned, “Cause usually your dreams involve a lot of death.” The Professor had told them Magneto was dangerous and had to be stopped. Now he wasn’t here and Magneto was and apparently he’d built the damn place and probably somewhere pigs had grown wings and were flying south for the winter. “How exactly? Nobody is telling me anything here!” he ran his hands through his hair, the ground starting to ice up under his feet.

Elysia uttered a snort and shot him a look. “No-o,” she insisted, though the knowing look in her gaze said otherwise. It was an annoyance, sure, but it was one of those harmless ones that would steal forth a smile every now and then. It was a welcome change to the silence or bustle that came with painting outside. 

“That’s a lot of blues. Ice blue is nice, why is it obvious, though?” She asked as she smudged a thick glob of azure onto the canvas and started to work it in with her brush. A laugh escaped her at his next string of questions and she nodded, thankfully humored by his confusion. “This one’s cold because all of the colors I used have more blue tones in them than red. If I wanted to make this warmer, I’d use more colors with red in them, like this walnut or mahogany.” She held up the two tubes of paint and then grabbed a cooler brown to show the difference.

“I mixed seal and lava for the sky. Seal is more warm… So it helped give the sky some life.” Elysia took great pride in her work. “Rain is nice,” she agreed. “Is that the only reason you like it? Because it makes you sleepy?” Her question was punctuated with a small laugh.

Bobby grinned, “Suuuuuuuuure.” he said lightly, this lady kinda reminded him of Jean a little, though maybe she was quieter. Either way he liked the feel of her so he was happy to stick around and watch, even if he didn’t understand any of it, it was nice being close by a person who he liked at first glance.

“Oh, right. It’s obvious cause I’m Iceman.” he said with pride. He held a hand out and a ball of snow manifested in his palm that he threw over the pier and into the sea, “See?” he asked with a little chuckle, “I mean, I can do way more impressive stuff than that but you get the point.” He blinked at the colour explanation, “Okay, so blue can be cold and hot can be red, I guess that makes sense. But what about stuff like green and purple?” Thinking on it he couldn’t have guessed what temperature they were supposed to be. “Those aren’t reds, they’re woods.” he said, looking at them, “Using the same word for two things is confusing.”

“A lively sky.” he blinked, “Y’know for me a lively sky is like, one that’s full of birds. Got any birds in the lava sky?” He nodded when she agreed on liking rain. “Uhh... I mean yea, but like when I wanna sleep I sleep better when it’s raining.” he shrugged, “Makes me feel safe. Dunno why.”

Laughter echoed around the small District park as Teddy entertained a small crowd of children and young teenagers. He would pause and take some suggestions from the crowd before pretending to struggle slightly as he shifted his body - trying to perfectly match each suggestion in whatever wild combination the kids came up with. Teddy should have expected wandering through the district in his shifted appearance would draw some attention, but ‘street performer’ was something he hadn’t expected. 

He couldn’t exactly say he wasn’t enjoying himself though. It was kind of fun to see what he could mash together. Turning to a slightly older male - probably not much younger than himself - Teddy let out a laughter that jiggled his Gremlin-like ears and floppy nose he’d formed. “Any ideas?” He questioned with an innocent warmth.

Bobby was still trying to get out about the District as much as he could, mostly so that he could see if any of his friends turn up but also to try and meet new people as well. The trouble with all the people who were close to ‘older’ him was that they kept comparing them or giving him weird looks. At least when people didn’t know the older Bobby Drake he could get them to know him for himself and not a younger version of the person they already knew.

So, he’d found himself in a group of people his age and younger (maybe one or two older) watching in amazement as a guy made himself into whatever they wanted him to be, it was amazing! “Oh uhr...” he thought for a moment, “Oh! Can you be a snowman?” he asked, icing his body over and deliberately keeping himself at the kind of fluffy snow level, “Cause I can!”

“He better like it,” Johnny said easily. It wasn’t as if he hadn’t considered the possible fallout from going public with Peter, but he’d only done it after the fact. When he’d kissed him, it had been a spur of the moment thing, a move of desperation and panic. There had been a very real chance that he wouldn’t make it out of that messed up ‘Funhouse’ at the Carnival, and he’d just watched him accidentally out his whole identity on a live feed. He’d not really taken the time to consider that people would be watching the reception Johnny gave him until he’d already…well, given it to him. He’d wanted to do it for so long that any of that had ended up being secondary. It wasn’t as if he hadn’t known for awhile already that he didn’t just swing one way.     

Johnny stopped before getting in the car and pointed one finger right at Bobby. “Do not, under any circumstances, keep nugget sauce anywhere on your person. Do you understand? You will be a virgin until you’re thirty.” He didn’t know if that was strictly true, but he felt like it was a credible threat to issue. Once he’d done it, he resumed the walk and soon enough they were standing by his ride for the day - a cherry red ‘77 Firebird that he’d just finished restoring a few days before. “Fast and beautiful,” he answered as he gestured toward the passenger door. “Buckle up.”

Bobby swallowed, feeling his cheeks go very red at the (in all honestly, not too salacious) implication. It was all just so new to him. Even if he wasn’t from too far in the past a lot of people had made it very clear they didn’t think people like them should exist, and he wasn’t talking about mutants. It was a conversation point his father had brought up more than once in the somewhat tense dinners he attended when they could bear to have him home. But, his father wasn’t here, it was him and Johny and the guy just seemed to radiate confidence, Bobby had never really considered himself shy but around this guy he couldn’t help but retreat a little, he was like a kinda sun... oddly appropriate knowing he was a fire mutant, well not mutant but something?

He blanched at the finger pointing, “Till I’m THIRTY!?” he cried, “Do girls... I mean, uhh, people hate sauce that much?” It seemed like such a weird date killer. He was distracted from that worry though, by the sight of the coolest car he’d seen, “Holy avalanche!” he breathed, gingerly reaching for the handle like he was scared he’d break it, “This is the most amazing car in the history of amazing cars!” he carefully got inside and buckled his belt, running his hands over the seats, “You must have as much money as Warren to have a car like this!”

“Me? We ain’t that far apart in age, y’know. Well… normally, I mean.” Anna gestured at Bobby awkwardly. Emma was closer to her age, but she tried not to think about her unless she had to. She sighed, slipping her hands into her jacket, and tried not to smirk. “Guess it’s gotta be weird for ya, too.“

It was difficult to put herself in the mindset Bobby was working from, just because it seemed like such a long time ago. She nodded, her brow furrowing at the information, and gave a sigh. “No one’s seen ‘im in a long time. Since before the ban, I think.” Not that she’d asked Scott a lot of questions regarding Professor X’s whereabouts. At this point, it was typical for the X-Men to operate independently. “What are ya gonna do? Try to go back? Someone can probably help ya manage it, there’s a lotta smart people an’ m’sure they can replicate… whatever it was they did back then to get ya here.” She imagined Bobby wanted to go back to the people he knew and recognized, especially if his whole purpose for being here were moot.

“Nooo, but you’re still younger than me.” He chuckled, “Back in uhr, my time, there’s not many folks who are.” It always felt like he was looked down on a little or passed over for all the exciting stuff, it was always Scott, Hank, Jean or Warren who dealt with it. “Weird’s an understatement... Older me and me well... we had a talk.” he mumbled.

Bobby blinked up at Anna, “But why? He’s supposed to look after us right?” Granted, maybe the Scott, Warren and himself that he’d met were able to look after themselves but it just felt wrong to him; the professor had been so hands on with all of them that him not being here at all was like something missing. “I dunno.” he shrugged, “I should go back but I came here with my friends, y’know Scott, Jean, Warren and Hank, and what if they’re stuck somewhere? Or they’re here as well but in a different place? I can’t go back till I know they’re okay.” And maybe some people here could help him look for them. “I’m just worried they might be stuck somewhere bad and they’ve all looked out for me loads already.” He had to try and return the favour.

The younger’s insistence warranted a defeated sigh on Daken’s end. Pushing others to the brink appeared to be Bobby’s forte, regardless of age. He could potentially become what the mutant would now despise. He stuffed his device into the zippered pocket of his black leathered jacket, hardening his brow while listening. He felt the approach stronger, forcing him to raise a defensive hand.

“Fine.”

The spite was uttered in an evident harsh begrudging whisper. Dark brown eyes flickered back towards the younger. He softened his gaze, firm brow attempting to keep his expression intact.  

“I’ll tell you what: I’ll let you tag along with me to run this errand but after that, you leave me alone for good. That and your older self hears nothing about this from you. Do that for me and I’ll bring you a snack next time I’m here. How does that sound in terms of a compromise?”

Bobby grinned when he won their little fight. “See? There’s very little point in trying to get me to do something I don’t wanna. I’m very stubborn.” Usually it was only his friends or the Professor who could get him to change his mind about things. Or, in some cases, force him not to follow through on what was likely a very risky idea.

He didn’t even mind that the other was so unhappy about it; after all, Bobby hadn’t done anything to be mean; his older self had (probably with good reason and he’d be asking about it later) but for the moment he was trying to be himself, not his ‘current’ self... boy, even in his own head that was a confusing thought. Still! He’d made up his mind to find out more about this guy so that’s what he was doing.    

“Hmmm.... Nope!” he responded, popping the ‘p’ in the word. “Cause I see a big flaw in your logic. How am I supposed to leave you alone for good and expect you to bring me snacks in future?” he asked, eyes wide and face looking so very young and innocent, “Seems to me you’re tryin’ to make an impossible situation happen there buddy.”

Warren watched the other’s posture with a careful gaze. Knowing this boy was similar to the Bobby of the present day, he was aware of some of the ice mutant’s gestures. The shrug of his shoulders. His averting gaze. Furrowed brows added to Warren’s building concern for the younger incarnation of his dearest friend. 

“Hey, don’t worry about it too much,” he said. “It’s a lot to take in. You’re right. That doesn’t mean you have to keep it to yourself. It’s okay to be nervous, too. I’m always around and so is your older self if you need anything. As for the old man that isn’t Scott, he’s just pulling a Houdini. I wouldn’t be too concerned if I were you.”

Bobby found it again disconcerting this guy (who he knew but also didn’t) was able to read him so easily. He blinked up at him and snorted, “Dude, we both know I’m not Scott, but I still worry about stuff.” The difference was, unlike Scott, he was really good at hiding it, none of his friends seemed able to look deeper like their older selves could.

“I dunno how to talk about it.” he huffed and ran a hand through his hair, “I have spent literally years pretending it wasn’t a thing. It was just a mistake and now it’s right and centre and older me just seems so...” he gestured with his hands, trying to explain, “Okay. Like he’s happy!?” Something he’d never thought would happen with the thing involved.

“I actually…don’t know,” he said, wincing just a little. He had already been the subject of much ridicule by his coworkers for not knowing who ABBA was when ‘Dancing Queen’ came on the mix of unbearably cheerful music that played on a loop at the roller rink. He had to come up with some sort of list to get all these pop culture references, otherwise, people were going to keep thinking he was weird and standoffish—not that he did much to help that image of himself, spending most of his time actually being weird and standoffish. “Oh, Tom Jones. My mom liked Tom Jones,” he said with a crooked smile, the memory of his mother singing ‘If I Sing You a Love Song’ in a goofy voice as she danced around the living room coming to the forefront of his mind, unwarranted. It was a memory he didn’t realize he still had. 

RJ couldn’t help the smile that lifted at the corners of his lips as the other spoke to him in a singsong. He envied that kind of joy, wanted to harness it for himself and didn’t quite know how. Maybe if he spent enough time around the people who seemed to have a grasp on it, then he would learn how to be that happy himself. Or, maybe it was all an act—if it was, he didn’t want to know. “Ok, you’ve sold me. My break’s actually about to come up.” He turned the ridiculous baseball cap covered in roller skate decals backwards on his head and took off the pin with his name on it, tucking it into his pocket. “But we’re not staying here. There’s a way better place up the street.”

“Oh.” Bobby blinked a few times but was soon grinning again, “Well then you’re in for a treat man! I’m telling ya I laughed so hard watching that film I nearly bust a gut. The emperor guy? He reminds me so much of my friend Warren and that just made it better.” Warren did think he ruled the world sometimes, but he took it all in good fun. “Seeeeeeee! Everybody knows some stuff, you know bout Tom Jones. My Mom loved Elvis, she plays his songs all the time when she’s doing the washing up.” Usually Bobby had been sat at the kitchen table getting some help with his homework if he needed, back he’d been ‘normal’ and his parents didn’t flinch at the sight of him. Okay, slipping outta that train of thought real quick; he hated thinking too much about his parents. “Either way, ya know more than you think! And with folks like me introducing you to comedy gold you’ll be caught up in no time.” Minus the fourteen years he’d skipped but that wasn’t the best conversation to have at a first meeting.

He knew that grin, he’d seen it from Scott time to time, usually it meant Bobby had convinced him to join in with a little mischief and they’d soon both be in trouble. “Hey! I’d be a great salesman, I could see fun to a clown.” He didn’t even care that the comparison didn’t make much sense, honestly it was just nice making a friend who didn’t know about his current ‘situation.’ “Oh, gonna throw out your pokéball next?” he asked with another smile when RJ spun his cap around, he wondered if the guy would get that one. “Really?” he said, smile dimming a little, “But they do good chicken nuggets here?” And Bobby loved chicken nuggets.

Elysia sucked in her cheeks just a hair before she conceded with a nod, “technically, yes,” came her answer. “But they all have different tones and temperatures.” She couldn’t help the slight smile when he mentioned blue tones and lifted a brow. “Okay, tell me all the blues that you know.”

“It can be, yeah,” Elysia confirmed and trailed a thin but bright line of white paint along the crest of the wave’s edge. “The temperature, like cooler or warmer, can really set the mood of the painting. The tone, add black or white, a shade or a tint, and it can also set the mood, or change it drastically. It could make someone feel cold and alone, maybe even scared, when they look at the painting, or warm and at peace.”

She shrugged a shoulder. “I guess so. What do you like?”

Bobby grinned, it was a little teasing, “Am I annoying you?” he asked, sounding like he’d be rather if the answer was ‘yes.’ He really couldn’t help it; Jean called it ‘little bother’ syndrome, which was kind of ironic considering he’d wanted a younger sibling growing up, not wanted to become one.

“Uhh, light blue, dark blue, oh! Ice blue, that’s a fav for obvious reasons.” he chuckled, “Oh! And egg blue, my Mom likes that one.” He didn’t know how an egg was blue but whatever. “Paintings can be hot or cold?” he asked, completely lost, “And have tones? Lady I’m pretty much still at ‘try and colour in the lines’ level with this kinda stuff, I’m probably not the best person to ask.” Still, never one not to have a go, he lent forward and looked at the picture some more. “Sooooo is this hot or cold?”

“I like that grey.” he pointed towards the colour being used for a lot of the sky, “Looks rainy. And I like rain, it makes me sleepy.”

There was a soft sigh leaving his lips while looking over at this younger version of his uncle. He can understand being disappointed that Scott and Jean didn’t work out but Nathan is just happy to have them both in his life at the end of the day. He doesn’t have the history of growing up around them before they originally got together. He wonders what that must have been like? If there was a younger Bobby here does that mean he should expect teenage version of his parents too? He doesn’t know how to feel about that … a little strange but he would find it rather interesting getting to know them at that stage of their lives. He was a prime example himself about how different someone can be as a teenager compared to their counterpart that’s much older. “You should give her a chance. She runs this place with my dad so it’s impossible to avoid her.” He wouldn’t push too hard, ultimately whatever Bobby decides isn’t much of his business. He knows from experience how overwhelming being displaced from your one time can be. Everything you knew doesn’t matter anymore it seems, becoming intertwined with so much new information.  

“Well … in my experience when my mother uses her telekinetic abilities it gives off a pink color. Maybe it was something that developed later on? My left eye glows though … I think because of my dad.” He doesn’t know all of the specifics though on his powers. Nathan had teachers to show him how to use them but not to do studies or go into detail about what they meant. “Well, if you ever want a partner to train with in the danger room I volunteer.” He wouldn’t ever say no to some more training. It would be good for both of them. He places a hand on Bobby’s shoulder after finished taking care of the ice. “Your older self might have more insight on it all but I’m here to help you figure it out too. I know how scary it can be trying to learn control on your own. Especially if you don’t have a friend to support you. I can be that for you …” He can imagine being away from your team and friends can be difficult.

In the grand scheme of things there were probably way more important things to be focusing on right now; the whereabouts of his friends and the fuzzy future Hank, how he was supposed to get back to his original time, what kind of damage could he be doing just by existing here and now... But dammit he wanted to know about the lives of the people he cared about, and hearing they hadn’t gone the way he’d expected was hitting harder than he’d have liked. They didn’t really talk about the future much... it was just a kind of given. “Oh I think you’re underestimating how good I am at avoiding people. Jean wanted to have a talk about my feelings once and I avoided her for a good two weeks.” Until the Professor and Hank had literally shoved them into a room together so Jean could get her speech out. It had helped in the end (a little bit) but he still hadn’t liked it. He liked the idea of meeting this Scott-snatching Emma Frost even less.  

“Huh... that must be another different thing.” he sighed and scratched his head, “I don’t get it. People are like, similar enough to be the people I knew but there are all these little differences I keep finding.” It made him wonder if this was even the same ‘time’ he was supposed to be in. “Well, at least they only glow; Scott sometimes gets sad about having to wear his glasses all the time.” And that was usually Bobby’s queue to jump in and do something stupid to divert his attention and cheer him up. “I’m not the best at training, apparently I don’t take it ‘seriously’ enough.” he made finger quotes and scoffed, “The whole point of training is that it ain’t real so it’s fine to joke about and mess up.” It wasn’t like he did it when the real thing happened. He blinked several times at Nathan’s comforting words, “Wooooooooow.” he paused a moment, “You really are Scott’s son...”
