Tried to edit chapter 3 of shoot another shot but hated it as I feel like it didn’t fit with what I was writing in future chapters so now now i’m rewriting it. 🥲
Here’s a snippet of Max and Daniel in 2022 reminiscing of a scene that happens in chapter3
“How’d we end up here again, Maxie?” Daniel teases, slipping behind the Dutchman, making him jump. “Me sneaking up on you because you’re too distracted spying on an alpha omega pair.” He laughs as Max turns to glare at him.
“It’s a different pair this time,” Daniel points out, tilting his chin toward the British and Spanish drivers.. “And you don’t seem nearly as…” He taps a finger against his lips in mock thought. “…murderous this time around.”
Max grins, gearing up for a comeback. “And I’ve even slept with this one,” he jokes, staying away from bringing up his emotions from last time, and the couple involved last time, But it doesn't work.
“I know,” Daniel replies, genuinely puzzled. “That’s why I don’t get why you’re not as in your feels.” He hesitates before adding “I know you and Lando don’t have feelings for each oth-”
Max shrugs, his gaze drifting back to the couple. “You know how I feel about Pierre,” he spits back interrupting the Aussie, using his distaste for his ex teammate for his past emotions.
“Sure,” Daniel says with a knowing nod. “But you used to hate Carlos, too” the alpha part of the pair they’ve been watching, the only other alpha teammate Max has ever had “Remember when he was your teammate?”
Max attempts to deflect again, not wanting to have this difficult conversation here “I was just thinking about how in love they are,” he admits, turning his focus to the couple in front of them instead of himself. Even though they’ve been mated for a year now, their public displays of affection have never diminished.
Daniel groans theatrically. “They’re almost disgusting to watch,” he says, his expression turning to mock disgust. “And it’s even worse if you walk in on them sucking face.” He sticks out his tongue for emphasis. “Since when did you become a hopeless romantic?” he asks, finally noticing Max’s uncharacteristic reaction to the couple, never wanting to talk about love.
Max lifts an eyebrow in a playful challenge. “Are you calling me soft, Ricciardo?” he asks, exaggerating Daniel’s last name with a corny Italian accent.
Daniel holds up his hands in surrender. “Whoa, whoa, don’t get your alpha panties in a knot,” he says, dissolving into laughter. “See what I did there?” He winks at his double entendre.
Max can’t help but laugh along—a good joke is a good joke, really a good dick joke. He’s relieved that shifting attention away from his past emotions seems to have finally worked.
“I actually came to grab my teammate,” Daniel explains, nodding at the couple. “Bye, Maxie!” He waves. “Time for me to get growled at.” Chuckling, heading over to the couple, to break them apart and take the omega back for debriefs, while Max continues through the paddock, focused on the upcoming race.
