" i ’ ve  held  plenty  of  things , "  xaden  says  with  a  grin : almost suggestive enough that it  feels  more like  a  wink .  " surfboards ,  beer  glasses …  my  fair  share  of  questionable  decisions . "  the  words  come  out  so  casually ,  it ’ s  hard  to  tell  if  he ’ s  joking ,  but  the  glint  in  his  eye  says  he  probably  is .

he  glances  at  the  poster  again ,  one  hand  rubbing  the  back  of  his  neck  like  he ’ s  trying  to  hide  a  laugh .  " steady  hands ?  yeah ,  got  those .  years  of  pouring  drinks  without  spilling  a  drop .  well ,  unless  you  count  that  one time  . . . but hey , everyone gets a pass for their twenty - first . "

" look ,  i ’ m  no  expert , "  he  continues ,  leaning  a  little  closer .  " but  i  don ’ t  break  things ,  and  i ’ m  decent  under  pressure .  and  hey ,  worst  case ?  i ’ m  good  for  morale . "

There's something about Xaden - the confidence? the swagger? the jawline? - that makes Sasha definitively nervous. He can barely hear the jokes or the so-called expertly steady hands examples because there's blood rushing through his ears at the concept of someone so distinctly at ease with themselves being interested in working on a shitty little movie with Sasha of all people. Gulp! He tries to laugh, only it comes out squeaky and awkward, so Sasha takes a step back and pretends to think about it.

" Well, sure, if you can pour cocktails I'm sure you can hold an expensive piece of camera equipment without risk of dropping it and shattering it to bits. They're basically the same. "

Despite his sarcasm, Sasha reaches into his pocket and fishes out his phone. " Alright. You're in. I'll put your info down. Now we just need... everyone else. You don't happen to know any actors, do you? Or writers? Or... anyone? "

Lacey raised an eyebrow, glancing between Sasha and the poster with an amused smile. “Interested? I mean, it’s got that whole grassroots charm going for it.” She pointed to the tabs at the bottom. “I respect the optimism with these, by the way. Real bold move in the age of QR codes.”

She crossed her arms, tilting her head to study him for a moment. “But yeah, sure. I could be interested. What are we talking about here? A heartfelt indie masterpiece, or am I signing up to be an extra in some horror flick where I get eaten by a guy in a papier-mâché monster costume?”

Her tone was teasing, but there was genuine curiosity behind her words. “Sell me on it, Sasha. What’s your no-budget vision?”

A bombardment of questions leaves Sasha without a single answer. He hesitates, mouth hanging open like a fish; what does he want to do with this movie? He wants to make it, that's a given. He really hasn't given it much thought past that.

" Not a horror, " Sasha says decisively. " Too much mess. And I dunno' know anything about papier-mâché, so definitely none of the being-eaten thing either. Romance? Eh... "

Great pitch so far.

" The truth is I want to make a movie. A low budget " (because he may not have much of his own but he's sure he can use some of Pa and Gran's credit) " movie about anything. As long as people are dedicated to making something good and completing it, the film could be about - about fucking aliens for all I care. "

Sasha mulls it over for a moment before he amends himself. " I don't want it to be about aliens, though. So, um, if you have any alien-less ideas, I'd love to hear them. "

"I need your opinion." Lucy places two comics on the counter in front of the attendant, hoping a second opinion would help her come to a decision. "I can only buy one. New years resolution self spending rule, it's a whole thing..." She taps her mindlessly mindlessly on the counter, getting herself back to focus on the reason for her initial question, "But I can't pick!"

" Ummmmm. " Sasha looks between the two comics, then to the customer, and then back. In any other situation he'd tell her to get both (because he doesn't know anything about either one and can't say anything of merit) but she's just said the whole bit about saving money and now Sasha's extra stumped. He points at the one on the left. " Well this one has a woman on the front. It is probably... inclusive. The art seems... colorful. "

She doesn't intend to intrude on his space; if anything, she’s curious about what he’s putting up on the bulletin board, which usually sees little to no activity unless someone is posting an ad to sell something or offering a litter of kittens or puppies. Her eyes peek around his shoulder, drawn in by the bold letters that catch her attention. Just as the man steps back, she quickly says, “Sorry, I didn’t mean to intrude,” accompanied by an apologetic smile.

His question piques her interest; she had thought her acting days were long behind her, but perhaps they aren’t after all. Her head nods eagerly, “ Yeah, I'd totally be down. What’s the premise of it? ”

A yes! Not even a full day - a full minute! - of having the call out and Sasha already had a yes. A ' yeah ', technically, but an affirmation all the same. He's so excited that the question the stranger asks doesn't even register until he's already smiling. His expression falters.

" Premise? Right... " Sasha thought he would have time to come up with something before the calls came rolling in. He hadn't prepared for an instantaneous yes. " It is... in the works. It will be collaborative. To a point. " Sasha blinks. " Um, I have no idea what the premise will be. "

Lexie raises an eyebrow, giving Sasha a look that could curdle milk. "Interested? Oh, totally," she deadpans, leaning back slightly with her arms folded. Her eyes flick to the poster, scanning the black-and-white design like it’s a particularly questionable piece of modern art. "I mean, who wouldn’t jump at the chance to dedicate their precious time and energy to a low-budget—oh, sorry, no-budget—movie? I’m sure the payment in ‘exposure’ will really help me cover my rent."

Her gaze returns to Sasha, and despite the heavy sarcasm, there’s a flicker of amusement in her smirk. "But, hey, I’ll give you credit for the little rip-off tabs. Very retro. Almost charming, in a struggling-artist kind of way." She steps aside slightly, as though distancing herself from being mistaken as someone genuinely interested. "So, are you getting a lot of bites with this masterpiece, or am I your first non-volunteer heckler of the day?" @snuubbed

A blanket of crimson falls over Sasha's cheeks and he scowls, called-out and angry for being embarrassed about it. " Have you ever heard about doing things for fun? Having hobbies? "

Sasha turns back to the poster. He doesn't think it looks that stupid. Lexie is just a hater, and she can stay that way for all he cares. He smooths out a corner of the flyer. " I just finished taping this up. Congratulations on being an asshole in the first fifteen seconds: a new record, wow. I'll contact the trophy maker. "

“Uh, yeah. Marvel puts a focus on real life seeming people with flaws, like Spider-Man. Everyone loves Spider-Man because he’s relatable.” The hero from Queens, slinging webs and stopping small scale crimes like petty thefts all the way to battling powerful villains. “I don’t read either, but c’mon. DC is more gimmicky with extraordinary heroes hiding behind masks.”

It’s more cartoony, if Sasha wanted Paxton’s honest opinion. 

He puts one book down on the counter and spins it around so he can tap at the title of it that reads ‘Multiple Warheads’. “This is a better read than either, and the art is fun.”

Though Paxton isn't talking down to him, Sasha flushes anyway, embarrassed he didn't already know something he couldn't possibly have known. Of course there's a difference between Marvel and D.C! Sasha rolls his eyes despite the heat at his cheeks. " Not everyone, " he argues, petulant. " Although - I suppose a poor kid being bitten by a spider is more relatable than being a super rich orphan. "

Sasha takes the comic placed before him, wary but attempting to listen to his elders anyway. Paxton doesn't seem the type to lead him astray. He hums. " The art is nice. And this is about... " He skims, trying to gauge what he's looking at. " ...Monsters...? "

Nora closed her fingers around the bills and raised the same hand to give him a two-fingered salute. "Much obliged. These better be real. I've got your address now."

Probably a little too carelessly, she shoved the hundreds into a cupholder and turned back in her seat, prepared to put the car in drive and navigate to the nearest Wendy's off of the highway. "You know what, I won't even give you shit, because this means I get to watch you experience your first one. It's only the best ice cream three bucks can buy."

She shrugged. "Nah, man, come on up. You should know, though, that I'll take that as an invitation to yap unless you tell me to shut the fuck up."

Sasha only contemplates for a moment before swapping seats. Yapping is exactly what he's been trying to escape, but only because it's his grandmother's yapping that he's listening to. So far Nora hasn't said anything about Pinochle or rabbits, so he's fine to strap in and go for a ride. He eyes her as he buckles in. " Do people often tell you to shut the fuck up? In your own car? "

The hundreds flap in their plastic prison, rustling under the car's air system. Perhaps this woman is not as desperate for money as Sasha might have assumed someone in her position would be. " And you're promising me that three dollar ice cream is... good? " Sasha tsks. " I don't suppose they have three dollar gelato instead. "

xaden  eyes  the  poster ,  a  small  grin  tugging  at  his  lips .  it ’ s  nothing  special — just  black  text  on  white  paper ,  simple  and  unpolished .  there's  a  certain  honesty  to  it  though ,  and  he  can ' t  help  but  admire  that .  it ' s  like  someone  just  threw  it  up  there  without  overthinking  it ,  and  that ’ s  kind  of  refreshing .

he  leans  against  the  wall ,  hands  casually  shoved  in  his  pockets ,  watching  sasha  for  a  moment .  he ’ s  never  been  much  of  a performer — not  the  type  to  crave  the  spotlight  or  put  himself  out  there .  he  likes  the  quiet ,  the  understated .  but  there ' s  something  about  this ,  something  unrefined  and  real ,  that  catches  his  attention .  maybe  it ’ s  the  feeling  of  possibility ,  the  chance  to  try  something  new ,  even  if  it ’ s  just  for  the  hell  of  it .

“ yeah ,  the  poster ’ s  a  bit …   bare - bones , ”  he  says ,  his  voice  light ,  almost  to  himself .  " but  there’s  something  about  it .  doesn ’ t  try  too  hard ,  and  I  can  respect  that . "  he  looks  at  sasha ,  still  calm ,  relaxed ,  letting  the  words  hang  in  the  air .  “ i ’ m  not  much of an  actor ,  but  if  you  need  someone  to  help  out  or  fill  a  spot ,  i ’ m  in .  could  be  fun . ”

Bare bones isn't exactly high praise but Sasha wears a little self-satisfied smile anyway. 'Not trying too hard' is exactly the vibe he was going for. He had to let people know that he was serious but not too serious; cool, but not full of himself. That's how he was sure to hook the right kind of people for this project - ones that would stick around and not fall off at the first sign of difficulty.

" Have you ever held a camera before? A boom mic? " Sasha studies Xaden with a squint, judgment exuding from every pore. " Do you have steady hands? "

The poster isn't much to look at: black text on white paper with just enough tasteful graphics that it doesn't look like one of those lawnmowing scams. CAST AND CREW CALL, it announces. FOR LOW-BUDGET MOVIE. It's a bit of an up-sell, considering it's really a no budget movie, but Sasha's looking to get bites, so if he has to lie a little bit, so be it. His contact information is at the bottom, too, and he'd gone so far as to make little rip-off-able tabs so people could take one and go. He tapes it up with a silent pride (even though he knows full well he won't get any meaningful interest) before stepping back to admire his work - and almost stepping into the person beside him in the process.

" Oh, " Sasha says. He looks at the person, then his sign, then back again. " Are you interested? "

"He's cool, I guess. I figured since he's only here once a week that he would be bad at his job but he actually knows what he's talking about. I learned more about Zatanna during a ten minute conversation he had with a customer last Thursday than I have in the entire three months I've been at the Emporium.

...

It's not like I'm spyin' on him or anything. I mean, I did hear him mention his Youtube channel a few weeks ago and spent the rest of my shift watching his top clips behind the counter, but that was purely out of professional interest. He needs a new cameraman, and someone who can light his cheekbones better. It isn't weird."

"You've been using the fridge?" Ziggy questions, his stare blank like Sasha had just confessed to wading through nuclear waste after mistaking it for a Brat green coloured lake, "Oh no, don't do that. I'm pretty sure there's a sandwich in there from before I started working here."

He realises upon saying it that he's been working at the comic store far longer than he ever intended.

"That tile?" He asks, pointing up to the one that was most obviously off-colour to the ones that surrounded it, "That's nothing to worry about. It adds character to the place."

"All that it adds is the risk of it collapsing on a rainy day and soaking us with whatever liquids made it turn brown in the first place," Sasha complains. "I don't want this place to have character. I want OSHA to come shut it down so I never have to come back and smell that fridge again." Sasha closes his eyes and sighs, trying not to think about all the strawberries he's stored in that Chernobyl fridge. He withholds a gag, but barely.

"To be honest, some days I'd take the fridge smell over some of the customer's B.O. We should start selling comics about how to wash your ass. Or how to wash yourself at all."
