So in that review of the year episode of the point you poked fun at gamergate and as someone who sees it as a positive thing I was just wondering, do you think what's going on is ok the whole its ok if a "journalist" sleeps with someone he is supposed to be critiquing or do you just hear about the bad stuff like dumb people using the hashtag movement for their own trolling and such

No i think people who see loving relationships form between two humans as impinging on their ability to consume media are probably children or morons. Certainly they are both emotionally unintelligent and have an incredibly limited view of the real journalistic challenges that exist in this line of work.

I believe wholeheartedly in journalistic ethics - I’ve beaten that drum loud and clear for many years. Far before this stupidity. There are real barrier to press freedom that exist. There are real issues to consumer choice that exist. Paid for exclusives. Paid for previews. Paid for streams. Undisclosed sold Programming. Review Events. These are very real issues that need attention. But I guess none of them are sexy enough, right? That’s the point. That GamerGate is barking up the wrong tree. And they just….keep….fucking….barking.

So please, don’t get me wrong. I’m not only dismissing GamerGate because of the illegal and morally reprehensible acts that have been done in it’s name. But I’m dismissing it anyway, because it’s the most misguided and imbecilic argument for journalistic ethics I’ve ever witnessed. 

And I’m not only somebody who was very aware of this as a ravenous consumer of games media for two decades, but I’ve since joined the press. So apologies if this comes across as pontificating, but I know more about this than you.

GamerGate isn’t a grass roots movement of “real gamers” against the corrupt press. They’re little more than the Fundamental Christians of the gaming world. Willfully ignorant, unnecessarily aggressive, damaging to their own cause and ultimately best ignored.

Patrick, you're one of the few people I follow on Twitter that also follows Total Biscuit and I just want to know, why? I checked his timeline for his most recent awfulness and saw you in the "followers you know" section and we really can't have a better industry if people in the industry enable bigoted people like him. I'm grossed out by how industry folk don't condemn him let alone something as simple as unfollowing him on twitter.

Well given its Patrick…my assumption would be it’s more of a “holy shit didn’t realize I was still following that guy.”

The terms were very good. I was crying when I told Jeff that I was leaving. The site (and it’s community) has meant so much. it has nothing to do with how the site has treated me. I’m seeking a new challenge, and this felt like the right direction. I’m so excited to become a fan of Giant Bomb again.

Once, when I was 17, I got hypothermia and almost died. Hypothermia is a very comfortable way to die. I almost liked it. I did not see the pearly gates, and I had no ‘spiritual’ experience except for this:

My friends looked at down me on the ground (I was curled up in some gravel, amongst some snow and ice) and I looked back through that hazy tunnel vision they sometimes approximate on television shows when someone is drunk or something, and I could vaguely hear them shouting at me. 

They were shouting down at me in my candy floss haze, ‘GET UP, CARA. GET UP. CARA, UP.’ And I can’t be sure, but I think they were smacking me around the face. If I were them, I’d have smacked me around the face.

And though I wanted to lay down and sleep into death, they helped me get up.

I did not die on that day. And I think about it all the time. I got up. And when I feel like sitting down I remind myself that they told me to get up.

The Haim song I have included has many supportive lyrics, including ‘If it gets rough ITS TIME TO GET ROUGH’ which always makes me put my mitts up, and ‘never look back never give up’ is very important to me.

is the number one most important lyric that I have ever heard. The whole song is about falling, but listen: you might feel like you are falling. You may even have fallen. But you can recover from it. You can feel the heat but not burn. You can do the hard thing and make it through. You can do it.

Save Kanye for the moments where you need to actually just break someone in half and eat them, because no one man should have all that musical momentum.

You want to know the reason I can't stand you? It's because you demand things you don't like to change to suit your liking. Which would take that thing away from the people that liked it before. You never ever try to see things from a different person's point of view.

You realize a lot of people just don't want to play as a female right? Growing up we're basically shown most leads in action/fantasy films to be male it's natural that people want to play as that. If there is a problem it goes far beyond videogames. I find it pretty insulting that I would be considered misogynistic just because I want to play as the character I can relate to more.

The irony here is hard to measure. No one would blame you for wanting to play as a character you can relate to. Having empathy is realizing the vast majority of media—games, movies, etc.—are created to satisfy and monetize your desire for self-realization at the expense of many, many other groups.
