I’ll be back at Manchester City on July 20. Together with Beth (my girlfriend Beth Mead, ed.), who has now chosen City as well, after playing for Arsenal.
Personally, I expect to be back in shape for the new season, despite the knee surgery I had to undergo
Of course, we talked about that a lot. I’ve always said she had to make a decision about her soccer career, and she did look around at other clubs, but partly because of the season we had—winning the league title and the FA Cup—and the direction our management wants to take, this is the club she wanted to join.
I’m looking forward to playing with her again. Beth is a smart player, and in terms of quality and experience, she’s a huge asset.
I don't see anything wrong with prioritizing a partner and joining the same team. When you're 31 and have already won everything you could, what more could you want than to be close to your family? People forget that they are human beings with feelings. I'm not saying Beth only went to the city because of Viv, just to be clear, lol. People are so picky about the "girlfriends on the same team" thing, as if it hasn't happened countless times before 🙄

Column Vivianne Miedema | Nederland en penalty’s... Dat moeten we maar gewoon niet meer doen
Penalty’s trainen? Zo simpel is het niet, schrijft Vivianne Miedema in haar column. Ook blikt ze terug op de zware weken voor haar moeder. En dan is er nog de hereniging met partner Beth Mead bij Manchester City. ‘Door alles wat er gaande is, is het fijn om weer samen te zijn.’
Nederland en penalty’s... Dat moeten we maar gewoon niet meer doen, hoor. Ik ben geen vijfjarige meer die nu drie dagen moet huilen, maar het is wel heel jammer. Het is alleen wel heel makkelijk om nu te zeggen dat je op penalty’s kunt trainen. Het is wel iets meer dan alleen even een penalty erin schieten.
Kijk, iedereen kan een bal trappen op dit niveau, maar op zo’n moment lijkt dat doel in één keer héél klein. De druk op zo’n moment, het nadenken over hoeveel mensen meekijken... De ene speler gaat daar beter mee om dan een andere en dat is niet iets wat je kunt trainen.
Op een training schiet ik ook alle penalty’s erin, maar op zo’n moment is een enorm verschil met een penalty in een wedstrijd. Laat staan met een penalty tijdens een training.
Elke coach en speler probeert zoiets zo goed mogelijk na te bootsen, maar dat is écht niet mogelijk. De enige manier waarop iemand misschien aan de druk gewend raakt, is als jij degene bent die altijd penalty’s neemt op belangrijke momenten. Daardoor kan de druk iets normaler voelen. Maar ja, dan zou je dus moeten rouleren tussen penaltynemers op belangrijke momenten.
Dat Koeman nu stopt, is wel logisch. Ik denk dat het goed is voor het Nederlands elftal om een frisse weg in te slaan. En er zullen ook genoeg jongens nu denken: is het voor mij ook tijd? Daar heb ik zelf na het vorige EK natuurlijk over nagedacht, maar dat ligt aan veel verschillende dingen. Ben je fit? Speel je nog veel? Daar zullen spelers nu over na gaan denken op vakantie.
Miracle
Zelf ga ik nu ook even op vakantie en dat is ook echt even nodig. Als ik terugkijk op de afgelopen weken denk ik toch: jeetje... We kunnen wel zeggen dat mijn moeder een miracle is. Ze doet het heel erg goed en ze is druk bezig met revalideren. Ze begint langzaam te beseffen wat er allemaal gebeurd is en dat is moeilijk.
Alles is nog steeds heel zwaar en kost veel energie, terwijl ze normaal gesproken dag en nacht bezig was met van alles en nog wat. Maar het gaat nu de juiste kant op en dat geeft mij ook iets meer rust na enorm spannende weken. Daarom heb ik besloten even weg te gaan, waarna ik op 20 juli weer begin bij Manchester City. Samen met Beth (vriendin Beth Mead, red.), die nu na Arsenal ook voor City heeft gekozen.
Daar hebben we natuurlijk veel over gesproken. Ik heb altijd gezegd dat ze een voetbalkeuze moest maken en ze heeft ook rondgekeken bij clubs, maar mede door het seizoen dat wij hebben gedraaid met de landstitel, winst van de FA Cup en de richting die onze directie op wil, is dit de club waar ze heen wilde.
Dat we nu weer samen kunnen gaan wonen, samen met Myle, helpt natuurlijk mee in dat plaatje. Als je kijkt wat er allemaal gaande is qua familie is het heel fijn om weer samen te kunnen zijn en je niet meer op en neer hoeft te reizen. En ook voetballend kijk ik ernaar uit. Beth is een slimme speelster en qua kwaliteit en ervaring is ze een enorme aanwinst.
Operatie
Zelf verwacht ik weer fit te zijn voor het nieuwe seizoen, ondanks de operatie die ik heb moeten ondergaan aan mijn knie. Er waren nog te veel stukjes littekenweefsel die rondgingen in mijn knie, waardoor we na een scan besloten dat het beter was om de knie nu schoon te maken. Nu zijn we 3,5 week verder en als je het niet zou weten, zou je niet weten dat ik geopereerd zou zijn.
Door de operatie miste ik wel de WK-kwalificatiewedstrijden tegen Ierland en Polen. Zeker tegen Ierland (3-2 nederlaag, red.) baalde ik ontzettend dat ik het team niet kon helpen. Hoewel we nu de play-offs nodig hebben, zijn we natuurlijk wel gewoon aan onze stand verplicht om ons te plaatsen. Daar heb ik ook alle vertrouwen in.

The Netherlands and penalties… We just really shouldn't do that anymore, you know. I am not a five-year-old anymore who has to cry for three days, but it is a real shame. It is just very easy to say now that you can train for penalties. It is a bit more than just shooting a penalty in.
Look, anyone can kick a ball at this level, but at a moment like that, the goal suddenly seems very small. The pressure at such a moment, thinking about how many people are watching… One player handles that better than another, and that is not something you can train. I also score all penalties in training, but at such a moment there is a huge difference compared to a penalty in a match. Let alone a penalty during training.
Every coach and player tries to replicate something like that as best as possible, but that really isn't possible. The only way someone might get used to the pressure is if you are the one who always takes penalties at important moments. That way, the pressure can feel a bit more normal. But then, you would have to rotate penalty takers at important moments.
It makes sense that Koeman is stepping down now. I think it is good for the Dutch national team to take a fresh start. And there will also be plenty of guys thinking now: is it time for me too? I naturally thought about that myself after the last European Championship, but it depends on many different things. Are you fit? Are you still playing a lot? Players will be thinking about that now while on vacation.
Miracle I am going on vacation myself now too, and that is really necessary. When I look back on the past few weeks, I can't help but think: wow… We can safely say that my mother is a miracle. She is doing very well and is busy with her rehabilitation. She is slowly starting to realize everything that has happened, and that is difficult.
Everything is still very heavy and takes a lot of energy, whereas normally she was busy day and night with all sorts of things. But things are heading in the right direction now, and that gives me a bit more peace of mind after incredibly tense weeks. Surgery Personally, I expect to be fit again for the new season, despite the surgery I had to undergo on my knee. There were still too many pieces of scar tissue circulating in my knee, so after a scan, we decided it was better to clean out the knee now. We are now 3.5 weeks further along, and if you didn't know, you wouldn't know that I had surgery.
Due to the surgery, I did miss the World Cup qualifiers against Ireland and Poland. Especially against Ireland (3-2 defeat, ed.), I was incredibly disappointed that I couldn't help the team. Although we need the play-offs now, we are of course simply obligated to qualify. I have full confidence in that as well.
i actually understand why some people panic when they don’t see viv and beth together for a while, and the things trolls post definitely don’t help.
i think some of us are just lonely, disappointed by love or frustrated with relationships. seeing a happy couple like viv and beth can be comforting because we see something in them that we wish we had ourselves.
but i also think it’s important to remember that our feelings aren’t always reality. sometimes we need to take a step back, use our heads, and not let fear convince us that something is wrong when we simply don’t know.
