Everyone is always like "Sam and Dean should have a better, healthier relationship" (even though majority of what makes them Sam and Dean is their codependency and extreme loyalty to one another and taking that away from them will be flat out mischaracterization)
When in reality, they should just learn to let more people into their dynamic/relationship, so that they 𝘢𝘯𝘥 Castiel could be weird freaks that are extremely codependent on each other 𝘵𝘰𝘨𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳.
My boy betrayed Heaven and went against God for 𝘣𝘰𝘵𝘩 of them. He threatened the one person that could actually give him enough power to take over Heaven and become God, whether it be by giving him souls from Hell or finding Purgatory, for 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮, he considers both Dean 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘚𝘢𝘮 his friends. He believed he should die because of what he did 𝘵𝘰 𝘚𝘢𝘮.
Sure, he has a close relationship with Dean, I'm not going to refute that, but he cares for Sam just as much and just because he likes Dean more doesn't mean he doesn't have love for Sam as well!! (platonic or otherwise). Everyone has a favorite, I can confidently say Dean is Castiel's favorite, but I see too many people completely ignore Sam when it comes to Castiel and Dean's relationship, when in reality Sam and Cas were just as close. Sam believed in Castiel when Dean didn't, just like Dean believed in Castiel when Sam didn't. Castiel has been shown to be emotionally vulnerable with both brothers and that vulnerability went both ways.
Castiel and Sam both share a lot of interests and have a close friendship. Castiel took away Sam's hallucinations and mental struggles regarding Lucifer and made them his own, so that he won't have to suffer from them again.
Stop treating Sam as a third wheel/disposable character and start treating him like the major part of their lives that he is!!! Stop treating his relationship and dynamic with both Castiel 𝘢𝘯𝘥 Dean as anything other than that mess of trust, love, codependency, hurt, care, family and friendship that it is!!!!
Regardless of whether you see those relationships as platonic or romantic, you should give him his place beside them because that's what he deserves, what they 𝘢𝘭𝘭 deserve, they wouldn't have been where they are without each other and that includes Sam.
