I was wondering what your feelings are on books with wear and tear. I know people who seem to think that the only way to love a book is to keep it in mint condition, which is great and all, but if I love a book it's definitely going to get banged up. My favorite book has puffed pages from dropping it in the bath, food stains because I couldn't stop reading even to eat, and the back cover is mostly nonexistent. Do you think if you love a book you should keep it in the best possible condition?
No, I think if you love a book it’s going to be dropped into puddles and get soup on it, and eventually wind up in a plastic bag because all the pages are loose, like the copies of Good Omens that arrive at signings from embarrassed people who hope I won’t mind. And I never ever do.
