First Assignments
Since starting the second year i've been pretty busy. In the first week we stepped the conditioning up pretty severely, dynamic rope exercises as well as training on rings had us back to the familiar ache in no time. As well as the new conditioning regime we had a whole new set of students, it's a little strange not having last year's lot around but it's good to have a few new faces around.
We are now working on our site-specific performances. we decided to base ours on the fact the circus school used to be a methodist boys school that had a reputation for mistreating children... should be interesting!
Getting back into it!
So the first day back is over, and after a hard day its time to relax.
First we had a talk on the modules this year, the pressure is being taken off significantly with 4 modules instead of 6. Although we still have to do the work for the assessments taken out it should feel like a little less about always working another piece... meaning more time to train!
Next They hit us with a fitness test, minus the bleep test. Having it the first day back made for some really good results, my strength and flexibility have both increased over the holidays!!. I suppose we wont be going into the full syllabus until monday, but it's really taken it out of me so i'll be glad of a few days rest.
Apart from that i had some trouble with funding and registering for the next year of the course (turns out the student finance company sent my letters to my old house) but nothing that cant be sorted.
All in all looking forward to the new year. Site-specific performance next... Cant wait!
Just a little video i made up of us training in July
My first one handed handstand, taken at the Dutch Acro Convention in may
A little something I learned while playing with handstand jumps
Back to School!
So its time to get back to full time training in school starting on the 26th September. Really looking forward to seeing the first years go through all of the same tasks and weekly performances that we had!
Saying that its going to be a lot of work to keep up my progression as i have done over the last year, but i'm up for a challenge. handbalancing and catch-release rope here i come!
a shot from the Edinburgh Acro and Aerial convention on the 9th-11th september, great fun. I'm somewhere in the background here haha
A project in london that I performed at with Chloe my acrobatic partner such good fun!
So an awesome photographer, David Leyland, came to see the show and sent me through this pic a few weeks afterwards, love it!
EOY show rope act!
Extra hours, a torn ligament and an end-of-year show
Over the rest of the year I worked tirelessly to bring my skills to a level that I felt comfortable performing at. I had spent countless hours training acrobatics after classes finished and managed to gain a few fantastic training partners outside of school who helped my training along hugely, Lisa and Jane (my acrobatics teacher and her partner) were patient even when I was exhausted and irritable after a long day training in class.
When I had the energy I also trained extra Corde lisse. Learning climbs, drops, holds and later on some catch-release moves that I couldn't have dreamed of achieving without the close tuition of my rope teacher, Jonathan Priest.
As the year came to a close I was looking forward to using my newfound skills to create some technically challenging routines to put forward for the selection of the end of year show, a showcase of the first-years' work. Unfortunately in the few weeks leading up to selection day I tore a ligament in my thumb, the result of an overenthusiastic attempt at a flip I didn't understand and had no idea how to execute. I effectively destroyed the use of that hand in terms of Acrobatics and Aerial, but had to carry on regardless.
It turns out that this was rather a positive turn, rather than losing my willpower and sitting out of selection day, I worked to put two pieces together that could be done without the use of one hand. For rope this proved to be an excellent devising tool, the piece took on its own movement style, theme and limitations from the injury... I didn't have to think about creating a piece at all and I managed to take some new tricks from the experience too!
On the other hand working around my hand in acrobatics made both me and my partner Chloe have to think hard about what we could do. Any move where i supported with my hands was out of the question, unfortunately this ruled out some 80% of what we had learned, so we decided we would just focus on doing something that we enjoyed working on and wasn't too strenuous. The piece ended up almost like a caricature, larger than life and all swingdance and clowning. One or two technically hard moves kept it a challenge but that wasn't what the piece had become about. It was the first time I really enjoyed playing at a character and it meant i could really get into it, something I will definately work at doing next year.
Specialisations!?!?
Through the first few weeks of Circomedia the whole year did all four specialisations; Acrobatics, Equilibristics & Manipulation (E&M), Aerial and Physical Theatre.
Naturally I assumed that with my background in juggling I would take E&M along with one other discipline, maybe acrobatics or Physical Theatre, but as the weeks progressed I became engrossed in Corde Lisse (Aerial Rope) and loved acrobalance. so when the time came to specialise I had a tough choice, go with what I had been training for a years or jump in the deep end and start two totally new skills.
what the hell, i'd just quit my career, changed my lifestyle and relocated already, what was one more change going to matter. It turned out I wouldn't regret my choice in the slightest.
Before I shaved them off!
