Chapter 21 - Fifth Year: The Art of Avoidance

A quarter of an hour later, there came a quiet knock on the door. Draco slipped inside, hair damp, cheeks rosy, sporting a Slytherin jumper and soft grey trousers. A speckled green notebook was tucked beneath his arm. 

He frowned when he saw Theo. “What’s he doing here?” 

“Nice of you to join us,” I said coldly, stirring the brew in slow steady circles. If it wasn’t stirred consistently, it would turn hard and sticky. “We need a dozen lemons. Would you go to the kitchens? And where’s the potion sample?”

Draco’s gaze was fixed on Theo. “You told him about this?”

“Alright, mate?” said Theo with a coaxing grin, hands occupied with weighing powdered sugar on the scale. 

Draco ignored him. “I thought we were keeping this between us.”

I frowned. “Why would you think that?” 

“You should have told me—”

“You should have showed up on time,” I cut him off.

I honestly haven’t touched the doc since the last update :( I fear I may be wrong about an August update. However, I think the format of the next chapter will be a series of patrol shifts so there will be plenty of Draco/Hermione interactions when I finally get back to it.

Ok, first: holy shit I loved the new chapter.

Second: loved it so much!!

Third: Draco, buddy, has it occurred to you that invading someone's privacy does not make them want to be around you??

Fourth: Draco, honey, you really wanted to impress her huh? That "I'm not the idiot you thought" is quite telling...

Lastly, obviously no problem if you can't answer this, but I wonder if he was white and upset after the occlumency stuff because she pushed him or because he was surprised by what he saw?

So excited to find out more!! Thank you for the recent pace of updates, it's truly an absolute treat.

Third: haha he saw an opportunity and he took it. draco will be draco.

Fourth: and the thing is, we all know hermione doesn't think he's an idiot at all. that's his perception. first person is so limited in other povs, so i'm grateful for these moments.

Lastly: he's shocked and in pain when he falls over, but i intentionally selected scenes i wanted him to see. it's part of the reason i had such stage fright with this chapter. there was so much to choose from. but i'll ask you, anon--if you were draco seeing her memories, how would you feel?

Haven’t read the new update yet (saving it for when I’m not completely exhausted, this meal requires savouring) but I was wondering about your Draco since there’s so many versions: is he more pathetic simping yearner or possessive alpha male?

Ecdysis Draco is very much an adolescent, so he’s not fully fledged. But I’d say he lands somewhere in the middle. Definitely a lover boy when he falls for someone, but also a jealous shit who doesn’t know how to regulate his feelings so they materialize in rash behaviour. My intention is to show character development between his Hogwarts years and his early 20s, when the story will come to an end, so we’ll see a range in his character. I don’t want to put him in a box because humans are messy and I want his character to have room to grow and feel all the feelings and come into himself naturally.

I hope you enjoy the next chapter and get some rest.

are there still characters in ecdysis that have yet to be officially introduced or appear "on screen"? or are all the players on the board already, as they say? if there are still some left, could you give a number of how many are still waiting to reveal themselves? no need for names or spoilers!

many more characters will be introduced throughout the fic, but there are only a couple important characters among them (i believe). everyone else has at least been mentioned even if they haven't played a pivotal role in the plot yet.
