From the very first film made in Southern Oregon to Reese Witherspoon’s appearance in downtown Ashland during last year’s big-budget production of Wild, the region continues to make its mark on the national scene.
With filmmaking in Southern Oregon blowing up into global visibility, students in Howard Schreiber’s Advanced Video Production class at Southern Oregon University joined together this Spring to tell the story of film in the region.
Debuting at 8pm on July 10 on Southern Oregon Public Television, The Jeffersonian, Take 3 showcases the best in visual storytelling about the diverse communities of film in the Rogue Valley.
The Jeffersonian is an ongoing collaboration among SOPTV, SOU’s Department of Communication and the Southern Oregon Digital Media Center. All three organizations collaborate to create real-world learning opportunities for aspiring media professionals in SOU’s media production programs.

Whether on the set, in the control room, or behind the camera, former KOBI-Medford News Director Julie Akins brought a wealth of practical experience and guidance to this term's edition of VP372E - Broadcast Journalism at Southern Oregon University.
Co-teaching with Communication Department faculty member Howard Schreiber, Akins led students in the production of three 30-minute editions of SOUndbyte, including a live broadcast on Rogue Valley Community Television in June. Working in the state-of-the-art television production studio at SOU's Digital Media Center, students researched, wrote, taped, edited and anchored news, entertainment and sports for the campus community.
The students' work also featured a social media campaign to increase engagement in campus media, follow now of Facebook to get updates about the return of SOUndbyte when classes resume.
In addition to her tenure at KOBI, Akins brought a big-market perspective to live television news from her prior role as a reporter at KRON in San Francisco, upping the game for the scrappy student team that emerged in this course.
I have been researching different “freedom of speech”/”speech” posters to help inspiring a poster for the Siskiyou that can bring out “The Voice of SOU Students” tagline on the website. I got some feedback from a couple people in the class and they really enjoyed this piece. I sent it to the print shop to have it printed in a 11x17 poster to see how it looked!
I just thought about adding, Facebook and Twitter icons at the bottom to help traffic more viewers to the pages.
This is my flyer for my upcoming viewing event! I’ll be showing the first two episodes of The Jeffersonian. These will be printed out and distributed this week and I’ll be monitoring the Facebook page for an increase in likes and activity. There will be a preview/ promo for the in-production episode “Take 3”. I hope to have a representative there to help answer questions and to speak a little about the process and ideas behind the show.
On another note, I’ve met with a woman from Southern Oregon Public Television and I’ll be creating a webpage specifically on their home (SOPTV) website for the Jeffersonian. I’ll make a calender of updates for the page and will keep the site updated with current information and production details of The Jeffersonian.
