PHOENIX KEATING
Who is Phoenix Keating? I’d like to think I am a young designer pushing the boundaries of fashion while maintaining wearability. I try to look into eras past and put an odd, yet modern twist to it. My design aesthetic is constantly growing and I try to stay as transient as fashion itself. I was lucky enough to have had Lady Gaga wear my things in the past and that has given me a lot of amazing exposure – I owe a lot to Gaga. I feel deeply for art and music in the sense that I feel fashion is a parallel medium. I was recently nominated for the International Woolmark Prize and found out that I was the youngest since Karl Lagerfeld to have been nominated and I am hugely excited to be apart of such a prestigious prize.
What is inspiration behind brand and collection? I take from the past and try to juxtapose it with something quite odd. I then take it into the future. Music inspires me greatly to do what I do. The latest collection “La Diosa de Oro” was based on spain; the Matador and flamenco.
Process of making pieces? That’s quite a big question! I guess it differs from each garment to the next.
Any special techniques you use to create a garment? For the latest collection I used heat set vinyl to apply the golden accents used throughout.

Take five minutes in my head. Seriously. In my opinion, this cover image is the perfect sum of my life and vision living in NYC. The fast pace and the blurred vision, sometimes you don't know if you are moving very fast or not moving at all.

We have not thrown in the towel. Life has just gotten in the way so we have been backed up with work and…. well… life. Postings will still be happening weekly. Shortly we will balance our new lives and bring you more editorials, interviews, weekly obsession and Audrey’s thoughts will resume shortly!

I am a muse. I say it is the most intimate relationship you could ever be in. Creators hold inspiration very dear to them and in order to inspire them, I hold them very dear to me.
My art is how I inspire others.
My job is to make non living things living. And my purpose is to express my mind on my body. What you see is how I really am. What you don’t see is that I have two personas. One behind the camera and one in front of it and they both intertwine to make up myself. I do dress like this daily and when I am dressed casual in jeans and a tee shirt there is still something over the top about it (but just know I don’t feel like myself dressed in jeans and a tee shirt). But what you don’t see is how I am before and after the camera is on.
I am a performer really. On camera I turn into someone else. That is something you will only see if you are on set with me. It is very easy to make the assumption that this character you see in front of a camera is really how I am. It is very easy to fantasize about what I could be like based off of my expression. It is not easy to get inside and see that I am just a pure human and a lady underneath all of it. I am very light hearted, feminine, delicate, careful, goofy, persistent, precise, driven and very unsure in new situations.
I give myself to the art freely but I do not give myself in real life. Maybe this persona I create on camera is my defense so I don’t feel hurt again. In real life, I am very detached and self committed. What you see is real, it is under the surface. And that is something that isn’t given freely outside of my art. In order to get all of me, you must create with me or know enough of me. In order to get what you see of me, you must treat me special and cherish what I have to offer. Because what I have to offer is all of me, both sides, and that is the most expensive gift I have to offer that can only be bought with trust.

This skirt was meant to be worn this way. Cruella, who?

I call these my victory jeans. Usually when I don’t feel like wearing a skirt and when I am in that “stay in bed all day and don’t want to go out but I have work to do” kind of mood. Which is kind of funny since they are called victory jeans because I wear them on the days when I feel defeated…..
We are on a hill, the photos are not uneven.

A flashback to one of my favorite shoots to this day. This was before NYC. This was before I was a stylist. Before I was ‘So Fausti’. This was the start of it all and still one of the most creative days ever. This is a video from the shoot titled “Faust” shot by Maria Lankina.
