Maddie had to say: her life on the outside was always so beautiful, full of elegance and poise fashion, but of course, if you looked too close, things were uglier than anyone could ever imagine. Sure, living in the biggest house on the big hill seemed so picturesque and sweet, but no one would suspect that Madeline herself was an illegitimate child of some trashy roadie her mother drunkenly hooked up with a few months before her wedding and kept a secret for decades. They wouldnât suspect that her parents kept her at armâs length, despite how hard she tried to win their approval, and this resulted in her unsafe and treacherous journey into uppers, designer drugs, anything to keep her going, to keep her sharp. Before she knew it, she had a full blown addiction, but she could stop any time she wanted and she did, here and there, but the itch was always there. She had enough money for any designer drug she wanted, but she tried to convince herself otherwise - to spend time with her siblings, get to know them, although even that seemed like quite the bust lately.Â
âHey, Hunger Games for clothes? Darlinâ, I would never. Iâm quite particular about what I put on my body, and Iâm the same way in my store, Steel Magnoliaâs. Ya heard of me? Itâs right in town.â She smiled, that sugary sweet smile that Maddie always had on her face. âOh, I understand that. Parents can be so complicated, canât they? Whatâs with yours? Mine are just too boring for me to stomach sometimes. Thatâs the story I know, at least.â Maddie smiled, shaking her hand. âMadeline Covington. Itâs nice to meet ya, Sofia. You can just call me Maddie though, no need to be so proper.âÂ
squinting her eyes, sofia nods. âyeah, i think i have heard of steel magnolias,â she says. âdid you open it yourself or just inherit it?âÂ
sofia shuffles her feet. âi dunno, my parents are just ....â she sighs, at a loss for words. âwell, i wonât bore you with all the details yet and scare you away before we even have a chance at becoming friends.â she gives the other girl a lopsided grin, as an apology. ânice to meet you. covington? covington. why does that name sound so familiar?â she said this moreso to herself than as a question to maddie, but she wouldnât be opposed to an answer from the girl, too. Â
