Hannah Modig: Hillbilly Heroin, Honey
Hannah Modigh’s photographs from her ‘Hillbilly Heroin, Honey’ series is an outsiders look into a rural coal mining town in Virginia, a place blighted by high unemployment and poverty.
The term ‘hillbilly heroin’ is slang for the prescription painkiller Oxycontin which is often used by miners. These days there is growing black market for the drug which has a heroin-like effect on its users. This scourge of drug abuse in hand with a lack of jobs, boredom and poverty has fermented an inertia in the beautiful Appalachian mountains. A place hidden from the world. Forgotten. (moray mai)
