i forget that we're mammals. but my mother's fingers rake through my hair and it feels like an ancient thing. we pass fruit and toss our voices around a table and there's a seat for everyone. we are not so far from tribe-making family out of a stranger. a friend out of nothing.

i keep myself clean and fed and there's not much else to do. i understand the goodness of skin on skin, the goodness in the weight of sleep. i can stop any time i want to feel warm blood running through this beating, four-chambered heart. i remind myself that the clock and the mirror are foreign, not the pain or my skin or the way it's been changing. because in the end, it's always just dirt.
