The 6 of you walked down the road, you rolled up your map and sighed tiredly, walking for hours had taken its toll on you.
"We should be there by nightfall," You put your map back into your bag and zipped it up, grabbing the jar of peanut butter from Changkyun and scooping out some with a spoon, shoving it in your mouth.
"That is if we don't run into any problems."
Kihyun just had to speak, didn’t he?
The bridge crossing the steep river to get to the town was blocked by a pile of cars, and behind the cars, you all could hear the growling and snarling of the undead.
The hill you stood on was tall enough so that the stragglers that had gathered near cars couldn't see you, but you could see them.
"Here," Minhyuk handed you a pair of binoculars. "What do you see?" He asked you, looking at you nervously. Your eyes roamed.
"Lots of...corpses. It looks like the wall was breached. That could mean the city's overrun and full of those things," You continued looking. "We can take 'em out, won't be too hard," You put the binoculars down and sighed. "But what's the point? If the city is overrun we shouldn't even bother going any further."
Kihyun shrugged. "Wouldn't it be better to scavenge the cars? There's quite a few, there could be food in them." You motioned your head forward. "Let's go. As long as we find somewhere to stay before night time, I'm fine with anything." You all headed down the hill, but you stopped before you got all the way down.
"Hey, do you have- Y/N? Hey, what are you looking at?" Minhyuk looked back, and then in the direction that you were looking at, one of the 'things' was wandering closer and closer. It only took a second for them all to realize why you were staring at it. You froze in place, You looked at Minhyuk with watery eyes, "Can you distract the other ones? I have to be the one to do this." Your hand was placed on your knife handle. "You sure?" His eyes were full of concern and you nodded, unsheathing your knife. "I'll be okay, it's not them anymore. It's something else." He motioned his head to the others, then to the small group of corpses that were approaching.
You walked towards it slowly, you dreaded this moment.
You had hoped that you'd find them with that bright smile of theirs, their cheerful laughter ringing through your ears.
Although you had told yourself not to get so hopeful, that there was a bigger chance you'd find them dead instead of alive you still believed. It turned towards you and that's when you broke, strangled sobs left your mouth as it inched towards you, its arms stretching out to grab you. You ducked and it tripped, falling. Your breathing was uneven as you finally bent down, jamming your knife in its skull and pulling it back out before it could do anything to harm you, though you knew it was already dead the moment it took its final breath, you couldn't help but once again stab it again and again.
Everything started replying in your mind. This thing used to be the person you'd stay up until 3 am with, the person you'd cry and laugh with, the person you got your first job with, the person you went to college with. The tears wouldn't stop coming and neither would the thoughts. They were the only reason you hadn't lost it, the only reason you kept going. They had been there for you through thick and thin. You realized you would never get the chance to tell them how important they were to you, that you were thankful for everything they had ever done for you.
You were pulled back into reality when someone grabbed your wrist, "It's over, it's dead. You can stop," Kihyun's gentle voice floated through your ears and you loosened your grip on the knife's handle, it fell to the ground and you stood up shakily with the help of Kihyun. The others stood a distance away, keeping watch as you threw yourself into Kihyun's open arms. He knew how it felt, how it felt to have to end the life of someone you loved dearly. His hand rubbed up and down your back, his shirt was drenched with tears but he didn't mind.
"We need to find somewhere to stay the night," Minhyuk whispered, "More like hole up for a few days, we're exhausted and we need a new plan, we have enough food to last us a while," Changkyun motioned to the three bags that were full of food.
"I saw a cottage a few miles back when I went to..twinkle," Wonho motioned his head towards the woods. "It looked clear from what I could tell." They stopped whispering when you walked over, looking dazed, your eyes were red and held no emotion.
"We know a place we can stay for the night," Minhyuk spoke up. "We can regroup and plan our next move." You nodded, your eyes glued to the pile of cars, the snarling and growling of the undead getting louder, and louder by the second.
"That's good. We should go, those cars aren't gonna hold much longer. I don't want to get caught up in another herd and lose you guys too." You said the last words bitterly.
You turned back to the group. "Lead the way." You walked for about an hour until you came upon the cottage. It was all clear, opened cans of food on the floor.
You bent down and picked up a can. "This was recently opened," you frowned. "It seems like someone has been camping out here," Changkyun looked at the neatly tucked away blankets in a cupboard.
"Should we leave?" You thought long and hard before setting your bag down near the door.
"No, for 2 reasons. 1. It could be your friends. If it isn't, that leaves us with reason number 2. I don't feel like leaving, and if they have a problem with it, then they can shove it up-" Your sentence was ruined by Jooheon coughing loudly.
"Uh, let's just hope that it's our friends, or that whoever it is, they're not coming back." You all settled in quickly, the door was being guarded by you.
You all passed around the dry foods you had to eat. You didn't want to make a fire, it would draw attention to you and that was the last thing you wanted.
You were all wrapped up in the blankets, you occupied yourself with a book, reading it to yourself quietly in the corner. The door knob jiggled and you were all alerted, your eyes widening.
"It's locked..did you do that?" A hushed voice asked, still jiggling the doorknob. "No? Why would I, if I knew we were coming back here?"
You looked at the group and Kihyun pressed a finger to his lips, motioning for you to crawl over to them. "Let's try the back door." You were all frozen in place.
You shook your head, "There are people in here!" You cursed yourself for speaking out. "I'm sure there's more of us than there are of you." You stood up and walked over to the back door slowly.
"We don't want any trouble, we were camping out here...most of our things are in there." A voice outside trailed off and you felt the guilt inside of you, they sounded harmless.
"You can come in and collect your things, leave your weapons outside, or don't. But, like I said, there are more of us, than there are of you." You warned, nodding for the others to gather around the room.
Minhyuk stood by the door, Changkyun was near the closet, Kihyun, Jooheon, and Wonho stood in the middle of the room.
You opened the door, and you were greeted by two faces, nerves clear on their faces, you tilted your head. "Come on in,"
They awkwardly shuffled in and you closed the door. "Oh! Hyung?" You heard Minhyuk exclaim and you turned around, taken aback by the scene in front of you, which was Minhyuk clinging onto the shorter one.
"Hyung!! you're safe!" The tallest one let out a sigh of relief. "I thought we were dead.." He sighed. "I can't believe we found each other!!!"
Your face fell at the sight of this. They had all found each other, yet you were alone. You sat on the chair. "We can figure out a proper plan now!"
Minhyuk was a happy camper, he turned to face you and he began explaining to the two newest additions to your group what had happened.
By now, you had zoned out. You were thinking of skipping out on them. But the same thing that made you help Minhyuk, the same thing that told you to accept his offer, told you to stay.
As he excitedly introduced you to Hyunwoo and Hyungwon you made the decision that you were gonna make sure they all stayed safe.
Things were gonna turn out fine. You weren’t sure how, but they were.
They had to.
