chromogenic print of an atom-bombed dress, ishiuchi miyako, 2008
miyako photographed clothing and accessories left behind by victims of the 1945 atomic bombing of hiroshima.Â
âfrom the 19,000 items made available to me [at the hiroshima peace memorial museum], i chose things that at one time had touched skin and bodies, and photographed themâŠ. a flower-patterned dress colourfully dyed. a puff of gathered, shiny skirt woven of silk thread. cool-looking, thin, gorgeous materials that once shed the summer heat. used kimonos transformed into blouses and cut to make air-raid hoodsâŠ. these objects, exposed to the heat and radioactive rays of a fire ball that suddenly appeared one summer morning, and relinquished by the victims of the atomic bombing, have been on earth as long as i have. when i came to realize the coincidence,i caught my breath at their vivid hues and distinct textures, their flaws and complicated detail. these are too deeply linked to daily lives to regard as âhistorical materials.ââ

for a handful of years i worked as a radio dj/show organizer. i donât think the importance of FM radio can be overstated and i think back to how it changed my life at a young age and feel so, so sad about how thatâs never going to come back for various reasons.
still, i miss the creative output. i miss being able to share what i had found on a massive scale. i miss knowing that iâm working the same night job that my grandfather had when he was my age. recently, i had some small idea of how to make this a Thing i can do to share my analysis and the context of it all. of course i ended up talking myself out of it. at the end of it all, i donât want to be a public person.
so here are the remains of that small spark of an idea. a playlist iâve been working on for over a year trying to tell a story of unexpected angles, the experimentation and the songs that speak to me from 1980s (sandwiched between two songs from 1979 but thatâs neither here nor there)
i hope you like it!
