Your eyes dart open as someone lifts your sunglasses without a warning from their comfortable position on the bridge of your nose. 

   “You’re going to get a really stupid tan if you fall asleep like that,” your boyfriend’s voice scolds teasingly, flicking water from his fingertips onto your face before you can even begin to muster up a protest.

   You can’t help but giggle, and give him a playful smack on the bare arm. “I wasn’t sleeping,” you assert, even though the day is so nice and the sun so comfortingly warm that you were definitely moments from dozing off. Sitting up, you sigh contentedly at the sunlit sky and turn to glance at Hansol in the beach chair beside you. Warm, sunny weather spent in each other’s company never fails to bring out the happiest in both of you.

   His bleached blond hair is dripping beads of saltwater onto his shoulders and he’s smiling so big at you that you can see his entire perfect front row of teeth. It’s a smile that, even after seeing it almost every day for so long, still stirs up a warmth in your chest that causes your cheeks to heat up and your lovestruck heart to start racing. It’s a sight you never, ever want to forget.

   But rather than sit there and think cheesy thoughts to yourself, you spring to your feet with a mischievous smile. The words, “Catch me, slowpoke!” leave your lips in a jumbled haste and you haven’t even finished the sentence before you take off, feet leaving messy, quick footprints in the sand behind you. 

   You take a look over your shoulder to see him, still grinning from ear to ear, leap up out of his seat and take off running in your wake. He’s already caught up to you before you’ve barely even stepped into the water. A surprised laugh bubbles up from deep in your throat as he wraps his arms tightly around your waist and spins you both around in the ankle-deep water, nuzzling his nose into the back of your neck. “Caught ya.”

   When you finally turn around -- still in his arms’ grasp -- he tucks a loose strand of hair behind your ear, a domestic gesture that only makes you smile wider. The kiss he then presses lovingly to your forehead is somehow both just long enough, and yet leaves you wanting another, even longer kiss. “How can you make me so happy just by existing?” It’s probably the sappiest question you’ve ever asked him out loud, but you mean it. You’ve been wondering what the answer is since the day you met. He pauses to take in the question earnestly and think about his answer. His exaggerated pensive look makes you roll your eyes (with loads of affection.)

   “Well, I don’t really know,” he starts, “Maybe we were meant to be each other’s happiness. Like fate.” And the twinkling in his eyes as he says the last four-letter word, fate, as if it tastes like his favorite dessert is enough to make his answer the most perfect thing you could’ve asked for.

   Despite the crowds of people milling about back on the shoreline, and the noisy families splashing about not very far from where you stand, they feel very far away. In fact, the beach suddenly feels like a place that only the two of you know exists. And a place you know the two of you can always come back to, so long as you remember it is here.

On your way out, a reflection in the hallway mirror that isn’t your own -- adorned with a familiarly toothy smile -- is the last thing that catches your eye before closing the front door. With wide eyes, you turn on your heels to look back. At him. “Wh-- how long have you been standing out here?!”    Joshua shrugs, already avoiding giving you answers. Typical. This wasn’t part of the plan tonight, your mind registers with a big sigh, because this isn’t a date and plenty of other people will be there and you’ll only ever really be friends with Josh. The mantra you’ve been repeating since he invited you to come tonight makes a repeat appearance in your thoughts.    “Cool socks,” he says, swinging his car keys around his index finger and jutting his chin in the direction of your neon rainbow knee-highs.     “Just trying to get into the era.” You say with a furrowed brow, still processing the situation and trying to come up with a fathomable reason as to why Joshua would come all the way out here to pick you up. By the time you realize you’re just standing there, looking confused as a lost duckling, Josh has opened the passenger’s side door and is waiting for you to, well, get in.    Once both safely buckled up, you turn to him and clear your throat. “Wait.”     “I’m waiting.”     “How do you even know where I live?”     He smiles lazily and starts backing out of the driveway. “I asked your friends.”    “Oh. Well, why are you even picking me up to begin with?”    “Um, to be polite. Should I not have?”    “Oh. Um, it’s fine.”    “Any more interrogational questions?”    You sit back in your seat, defeated and only barely more informed. “Nope.”

   “I’ll be back,” you say, letting go of a vise grip on your friend’s shoulder and grimacing at the lost security blanket. Gliding (but really, more like waddling and just struggling to stay upright) off of the rink floor and onto safer carpeting, you make your way to the snack counter to drown your pathetic sorrows in a blue raspberry snow cone. Joshua is an incredible rollerskater, which comes at no surprise, and has left you to suffer around the rink in the dust with your own friends.    You’ve all only been here for an hour, maybe less, and you’re already so exhausted you wish you could just close your eyes and wish yourself home. Even the lady behind the counter gives you a sympathetic look like she’s worried you might pass out in front of her.    What gives you a shock is when you come back to sit and eat the rest, and is Joshua sitting in the very spot you were planning to.    “Welcome. Sit down, stay a while,” he says in inviting honey tones while patting the space of carpet beside him. “It’s... I mean, it’s probably clean enough to.”     Laughing somewhat uncomfortably, you fumble your way to a seated position with your legs stretched out in front of you. You wish you could take a mental polaroid of the way your feet in skates look next to each other, but you know no memory will ever compare to the electric feeling of sitting with your shoulders touching.    There is a small silence between you during which you refuse to look to your left, at him, and when you finally do he’s already looking at you with questioning eyes. “Do you not... like rollerskating?”    “Um,” you think about how to answer him without revealing that no, you do not, and you only said yes to spend more time in his heavenly company. And eat a final huge spoonful of snow cone to stall for time. “Well, I’m not great at it?” It’s not a lie.     “I see.”    The song playing ends and changes, and the notes of an old and comforting one your parents used to listen to when you were little float through the loudspeakers, down to where you and Josh are sitting with your backs against the rink wall. A smile, genuine for the first time tonight, creeps its way onto your face. He notices. “You like this song?”    You nod, slowly. “Very much.”    He grins his toothy smile so big that his eyes all but disappear into crescent moons. “Okay. Then it’s a sign.”    And suddenly you’re being grabbed by the hand and pulled to your feet so rapidly you nearly drop your empty snow cone cup. “Jesus!”    “Will you be okay if I let go?”    “No! I mean, yes? Probably.”    He giggles and it’s an angelic sound. “I’m letting go. Because I believe in you.”    Without him to hold onto you slowly roll to a stop, too terrified to take a step further. “Why are you helping me now?” You ask without entirely meaning to, the question leaving your mouth without having stopped to think about its repercussions.    “What do you mean?” Now it’s his turn to look confused this evening.    “All night long you’ve been doing what might as well have been a choreographed skating routine with Seungcheol and Hannie. We haven’t exchanged a single word since the car ride over.”    He laughs at you like the answer should be obvious. “I was trying to impress you.”    His words leave you astonished and you just stand there with your jaw dropped. That doesn’t make any sense. “Why would you be doing that, you idiot?” you huff, going to walk closer to him to give him a shove, but forgetting you’re on skates and instead tripping over your own feet.    Josh is there to catch you. He steadies you, but leaves one hand on your waist. Him smiling down at you gives a new meaning to the phrase butterflies in your stomach, fluttering wildly inches from where his fingers rest. “I like you. Isn’t it obvious?”   You can’t think of anything to say that could come close to expressing your incredulity. You come up with a feeble, “But... I like you.”    “Oh, good. I’m glad. I would be embarrassed if you didn’t.”    You know you’re staring at him now, but you don’t mind. In fact, you’d really like to freeze time, with his warm hands holding you and his cat-like eyes full of sincerity. Full of sudden embarrassment, you look at the floor. “Well... what now?” you mumble.    Joshua interlocks the fingers of your free hands and gives yours a reassuring squeeze. “We skate.”

get ready for lots and lots of impromptu texts asking to meet up for coffee (drinks if you're into that) so he can ask for your opinion on new songs he’s been working through in his head or just to talk if it’s been awhile

if either of you is too busy he’ll just pull up facetime and ramble to you about anything, how his day was, what he had for dinner, that way

being his best friend would also mean being his closest confidant

so not only does he want to share all the best times with you

you’re who he goes to when the day is shit

and when he needs to rant about the pressure he’s under

of course you always listen with open ears and offer a caring shoulder for him to rest his head on

i bet you’ll take plenty of night drives listening to electronic music from the eighties, or maybe sometimes in silence, just saying whatever comes to either of your minds, if at all

he is the ideal friend to sit with in comfortable silence

jihoon is probably the perfect gift-giver, he always knows the exact thing you want or need when it comes to gifting seasons

and it’s because he’s ultra caring and protective over the people he cares for dearly, a category which you fall into,

your senses of humor probably line up impeccably and lead to moments of laughing so hard one of you snorts milk out of your nose and you both are just sitting there clutching your stomachs in pain

you’re both so grateful to have someone in your life who understands you so well
