‘I can’t go out tonight.’ You re-read the words, rolling your eyes and tossing your phone across the couch. He messaged you 10 minutes before you were supposed to meet. You sighed, irritated at the fact that he just told you, after you’d spent so much time getting ready. You’d styled your hair, done nicer makeup than most days, put on the perfume he bought you on one of his tours, and spent more time than usual planning your outfit. And he cancels minutes before. You didn’t quite know why you cared enough to do all that in the first place. Of course, you were always a little extra when going out. At least, that’s what you told yourself. After all, Jungkook was just a friend. ‘No problem. I have something I need to do anyway.’ you responded. You decided you weren’t letting all that work go to waste. Jungkook or no Jungkook.
The next day he texted you again, asking if tomorrow would work. Sure, I’m free. You didn’t know what the nature of your relationship was with him. In the last few months, it had changed. Everything used to be much more light-hearted and innocent, but recently it was like some kind of game. Every interaction was more weighted than it should be, and you didn’t like thinking about it. A lot of the time you couldn’t tell if he was casually flirting with you or just messing around and being silly like usual. The idea of him being more than a friend? Well, you refused to think about it, and if you found your thoughts drifting that way, would busy yourself. Talking to him about it would seem weird; ‘What if I’m reading into it too much?’ After spending too much time thinking, you changed your mind about meeting him. You picked up your phone and called him.
“Hey, Kookie. Something came up, so let’s meet later.”
Jungkook glared at the ceiling. ‘Let’s meet later.’ This time, he was the one who’d done all the extra work getting ready, wearing all the clothes you’d told him you liked best, messed with his hair so it looked how it did when you said he looked cool, and he was ready to be sincere. The last few months, his feelings toward you had changed. He’d always liked you, always thought you were special, but as a close friend. One who’d seen him from his craziest moments to the most genuine. But at some point that feeling had morphed and evolved into something he didn’t understand and tried to keep secret at first. Recently he’d been fighting for your attention: saying and doing things a little more out of the ordinary to see if you’d react, if maybe you felt the same. But he didn’t want to be too forward…telling your best friend you liked them had a way of making things weird. At the same time, he worried that if he waited too long, he might never get the chance to tell you.
Today he’d cancelled his plans to meet with some friends and game to hang out with you. Since May he’d been wanting to tell you, but waited a while, so things weren’t sudden. Each day that passed where he hadn’t told you felt suffocating like August heat, so this time he was going to tell you how he felt. He was feeling a bit nervous; though he was somewhat confident in himself, he had no way of knowing how you’d react. After shrugging off the nerves, he was on his way to meet you when you called, cancelling your plans. Why you did that, he didn’t understand. He was almost sure you liked him too, but you cancelled plans out of nowhere too often. In a way, it made him think you must feel something, but he wished you be willing to admit it.
This evening you were lying in bed, windows open to allow air to circulate through the apartment. The summer heat was stifling, and you were thinking too much because of it. You felt lonely for some reason, and the idea of seeing Jungkook seemed more and more appealing as the sun slipped below the horizon. Today the idea that Jungkook might date someone else popped into your mind. For some reason, the idea was almost sickening, and you hated to admit, but you would rather be the one beside him. Pretending not to know what was going on wouldn’t work forever. You decided to call him, just from a mix of curiosity, boredom, and loneliness.
“Hey,” you began hesitantly.
“Hey.”
“Can I ask you something?” You proceeded to fabricate a story, feigning the idea that it was about one of your friends and her crush, not you. He gave you a vague answer, saying she should tell him how she felt. He wasn’t really invested, especially since he was disappointed in the nature of the conversation. You hung up not long after, but not before making plans that you’d keep this time. You decided to meet at your apartment first, having decided to tell him (and Jungkook’s dorm had way too many boys eager to listen in). He’d agreed, having similar thoughts and motive.
Jungkook showed up right on time, and you opened the door to let him in.
“Need anything before we leave?” you asked, stalling.
“No, I– . Wait. Y/n, before we leave, I have to tell you something…”
I know this is the anon wrote this but this is Queennie in offline mode from @heart-baek-bleed. I know but I had on hiatus starting October 1st 2018 until February 10th 2019. Why? You sighed, plopping on the couch and turning on the TV after finishing the day’s classes. Your apartment was a mess; cleaning it cost energy and motivation you didn’t have. You tossed your phone aside, not wanting to respond to the texts that had piled up through the day from your friends and boyfriend. Dealing with people took so much energy out of you. You really did care for them, but it was hard spending time with them. Sometimes you felt genuinely happy around them, but other times feigning a joyful exterior was something you could hardly bear. It was much easier to stay home watching TV, only going out and talking to people when you absolutely had to.
You felt bad ignoring people, and occasionally you’d respond with excuses of feeling sick, having headaches, or being too tired from school or work. You felt especially bad about ignoring your boyfriend, Jungkook. When it came to your friends, you at least saw them in class or on campus at times. But Jungkook was busy often: touring, performing in concerts, or rehearsing for comebacks. So you felt guilty when you brushed him off. But the idea that his limited time with you would be spent trying to comfort you in your misery felt worse. He had enough worries on his own, especially with his job; he didn’t need yours added on top of them.
At first you made a ton of excuses why you couldn’t hang out or answer his messages. But eventually you ran out of those, and would ignore his texts, replying with a ‘Sorry, didn’t see this!’ after extended periods of time. You closed your eyes, listening to the background noise the TV provided, and drifted off to sleep.
You woke up an hour later to the sound of your ringtone. Rubbing your eyes, you looked at the name displayed across the screen. Kookie. You hesitantly answered the phone, not in the mood for conversation.
“Hey, I–”
“Y/n, open the door. I’m outside.” He sounded frustrated.
“O-okay.” You tried to tidy things up a bit, then let him in.
“I thought you were busy?” he gestured to the TV you’d forgotten to turn off.
You avoided his eyes.
“Are you mad at me or something? I mean, you never answer my calls and you always have some excuse for why we can’t hang out,” his eyebrows furrowed and he raised his hands.
“No, no. It’s not you, I promise…I just…”
“Then why do you ignore me? Are you tired of me? Did I upset you?”
“No, no, that’s not it. It’s just that I…” you trailed off, not wanting to give a real answer.
“Well since you won’t talk to me, I had to ask your friends how you’ve been doing. They said you hardly talk to them anymore. What’s going on with you? Did something happen?” He reached towards you, but you quickly stepped back, afraid you’d cry as soon as he touched you.
“No, nothing happened. I’m fine, there’s nothing wrong,” you replied. I’m fine, I’m fine. You’d conditioned yourself to say those words.
Jungkook shook his head, “Why are you lying to me?”
You folded your arms, looking away. “Jungkook, I’m just tired, that’s all. I just–”
“Y/n,” he spoke softly. “I can’t help you if you won’t tell me what’s wrong. I’m worried about you–”
“I don’t feel like talking about this right now,” you cut in. “Can we talk later?”
“Y/n!” he shouted suddenly, causing you to jump. “Every chance I get to see you, you shoot me down. It’s always later! So when’s that, huh?”
You felt your eyes burning, but no matter how hard you tried to bite back your tears, they spilled from your eyes, slipping down your cheeks. “I’m sorry,” you whispered shakily.
“Hey,” Jungkook remorsefully moved towards you. He cautiously placed a hand on your shoulder to gauge, then pulled you into his arms. At the contact you hadn’t known you craved so much, you began crying harder, unable to get any words past the lump in your throat. Jungkook didn’t say anything, only rubbed your back as you wept. Once the tears had slowed, and you began to calm down, he slowly leaned back, keeping his hands on your arms.
“I’m sorry. I’m just worried about you, and I can’t do anything unless you tell me what’s bothering you.” He spoke softly, almost like he was afraid you might break in his hands.
“I know…” you whispered. You paused before inhaling deeply, deciding to tell him.
When you finished, he pulled you in tightly before saying anything. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I didn’t know that things were becoming harder for you.” He leaned back, “Why didn’t you tell me? I would’ve done everything I could to help you.” Concern laced his expression and his eyes softened.
“I know. I didn’t want you to worry…I know you have a lot going on, and–”
“And? That doesn’t matter. You’re my girlfriend, and I love you. That makes your problems my problems too. I don’t have all the answers for you, but I’ll be there for you in everything, this included. Okay?” He took your face in his hands and mustered a small grin.
You nodded and embraced him, “Thank you. I love you, too.”
“I don’t know what the next thing to do is, but whatever it is, I’ll help you through it. You can always tell me what you need, and I’ll do what I can to help you, just like you’ve done for me.”
