It was freezing.

He wanted to curl in on himself, huddle desperately around his core. He wanted to shut his eyes to this horrible place and block it out forever.

He tried to remind himself that the others were coming. They’d find him.

Lies. They left you.

He shook his head with a whimper. They didn’t leave him, they’d be back, he just had to hold on, he’d be okay.

Look at what’s happened to you. Look at what they allowed to happen.

No, no they didn’t – they didn’t know – they’d be back, they’d find him.

Only when convenient; only when they need their canon fodder back.

He violently shook his head. No! They were his friends – they’d come for him, they’d help him – they would rip these vengestone restraints to pieces and patch his scars and he’d be safe he’d be okay –

E narrowed his red eyes and entered the command with a harsh jab to his keyboard.

“How’s it coming?”

He turned to the voice, glare quieting at the sign of her. Garbled sounds filled the air as he motioned to where the prisoner thrashed and bucked against the programming.

The Quiet One studied him a moment. “I’m sure he’ll get with the program soon enough,” she said with a grin. “After all, you’re a mechanical marvel – he’s got no chance.”

In front of them, Zane shook with effort as he denied the insistent words flowing into his brain.

Jay paused at the crackling in his comm. Nya’s voice filtered into his ear.

“All clear on your end? Anything to report?”

Jay shook his head. “All quiet out here, unfortunately.” He sighed. “No sign of anyone.” The unspoken name hung out on the airwaves between them. Their friend never seemed to stay long enough to try and talk to him – and any battle-tinged pleas had fallen on blank stares.

He’d been captured behind enemy lines before. He’d had to work in a noodle factory, had to try and pass as a stone warrior henchman, even disguised himself as a snake hive mind foot soldier.

He has blanks in his memory, from time to time. They fill in later, when he’s calmed down, but in the moment it’s terrifying. He has no idea what’s supposed to be there, and he’s always scared it’s something awful.
