I listened to the great divide by noah kahan as soon as it was released and look, i always thought he was queer until i discovered about two years ago that he's apparentely straight. when i first listened to that song, after reading the little text he wrote about the album, i thought it was about queerness. growing up with a queer best friend and understanding, as you get older, what he went through (especially with religion: ") but also, understanding your own feelings and your own queerness, feeling like it's too late ("rage, in small ways. did you wish that I could know, that you'd fade to some place i wasn't brave enough to go?"). after i watched the video for the song, i got even more sure of that. the cover of the album is two little boys, the video very clearly shows noah's friendship with his best friend throughout the years. in the part the i quoted a few lines ago, it shows the man who plays older noah crying, after it shows him remembering moments with his friend. watch the video, read the lyrics, i'm not insane. i genuinely thought the great divide (album) was going to be some implicit queer work about reconnecting (after all, one of the images the he posted for the album is the cover with "the courage to reach out" written over it) with an childhood friend (that maybe you were in love with). imagine my surprise when i learned that noah is married to a woman.

Each day that passes i'm more convinced that instead of byler happening in the volume 2, we are getting mike's acceptence arc of his own queerness, since it's going to switch to his point of view. we are getting the confirmation that yes, byler is going to become canon but they are only gonna kiss in episode eight.

PLUS THOUGHTS

i think will is going to kiss mike first but he's going to pull away really fast and who's actually initiating the kiss for real is mike. with volume 1, it's clear that the writers are building will's confidence in his on opinions, thoughts and identity and the line "how obvious?" is there for a reason. he's going to initiate the kiss because he's more sure of himself than he ever was but he's also going to pull way because he worries of losing mike still and mike is going to kiss, for real, because that's what he's been wanting to do since forever but he's been scared, of himself, of their situation.

i also think, realistic speaking, the kiss will be more gentle than passionate, kind of like nick's and charlie's kisses in heartstopper. what i think is perfect: a passionate kiss like nick and jess from new girl.

Just thinking about the current political landscape and how this last season of Stranger Things, a show about outcasts and creating communities and support systems for those who are not seen by standard-society/the state, makes a point to show how vulnerable kids and teens actually are, by making the kids in the narrative disappear or be actively in danger -- which can be interpreted in a lot of ways, since the upside down can be read as a metaphor for depression so that would be how young people are prone to mental illness OR the fact that vecna/mindflayer is an allegory for predators and he's been targeting kids and teens.

what i find interesting is two things: 1. the government pins the fault of everything on el's shoulders, the deaths, the upside down and the kids being at risk, it's all el's fault in the eyes of the government, a girl that's been doing nothing but help all this time, who's been villanized by the state and the military, seeing as a danger, because she's different, an outcast. the fact that el is completly different from what a "normal teenage girl" looks like makes automatically a target, even if its been proved that nothing that is happening is her fault. el being an outcast that is not under control/manipulation, is a threat to the system, turning her into an easy target. you have seen this story before right?

2. the kids are in danger, the military knows that but they are willing to put them at even greater risk to ignore the identity of the real villain and the real problems for their own benefit, because they gain more profit if they target el instead of the big bad problem. the government uses shallow excuses that they're "protecting" the kids while only putting on greater danger to achieve their evil agenda. and let me tell you something else: the only people that actually cares about the kids and did (and are still doing) everything on their power to keep them save are the outcasts, the minorities, the ones that the government blame for unsafety of the kids.

the outcasts care and they have a cause that they fight for, they are also actively in danger but kids matter, because people in vulnerability matters.

when you read this narrative like this, it's clear the parallel of "protecting kids" propaganda created by our consertives governments that only exists to target marginalized communities. it's not super deep or super obvious in the tv show, but it's there.

Since the Duffers have said that Vecna leaves Will there for a reason (probably implying that he wants Will to gain powers, so he can begin to control Will even more), my guess is that he showed Will the memories of him being tortured by internalised homophobia to induce so much anger in himself that it ignited his powers. However, that obviously didn't work - Vecna doesn't realise that Will's self-acceptance of being gay and in love with Mike actually is the thing that unlocked his powers and saved everyone. Self-love and queer love saved three people from death, not fear and not hatred or anger.

Now, my next guess is that Vecna is going to try this again. This time, not just with Will's sexuality, but with Will's feelings for Mike, because he can no longer use the self-hatred thing, as Will has gone past that now. Mike is going to be used as a tool for Vecna's torture of Will next volume.

What we also must consider is that:

Will can see through people's perspectives if Vecna is inside their mind. If Vecna is inside Mike's mind, Will can see his perspective. Could be used for a terrible thing or a good thing, who knows.

We have not gotten a lot of Mike's pov yet, though I expect to get even more of it due to the last 10 minutes of Sorcerer in which he kept saying "eyes on me, remember?" and the pov of Will standing up etc.

Nancy's vision from S4 described everything that ended up happening: the world splitting in half, monsters everywhere, her parents being hurt, her sister being hurt and Mike.... well. That part hasn't come true yet, and it's being saved until last for a reason.

The last thing that needs to happen here is Mike's feelings for Will to come into play, to be made obvious to the audience, and maybe his internalised homophobia to not only be used against him but used against Will, in a kind of - see how disgusting he thinks you are? - way, when in fact, it's Mike that sees himself that way. We all believe in a happy ending for our characters, so how can this be solved? I think you know: Mike needs to come to terms with himself as well. In order for a full recovery of Will, and the rest of Hawkins, Mike needs to have that insane monologue that Finn has been teasing for a couple weeks now. Shits gonna go crazy.
