The potential successors of Mojo Jojo in Powerpuff Girls Bloodlines
bonus Beam and Night-Mare
I feel like I'm going to get yelled at for this question, but this is something i had thought for a long while and wanted to know what outside people think, and I had never seen a lot of debates about this ship. (PPG x PPNKG) (This is regarding canon, no AUs or anything) The Powerpunk Girls (Basically an official mirrored version of the PPG and technically an alternate version of themselves with different names. But they could be different enough to be considered as "counterparts" (like the RRB) or even as their own separate people.) A good amount of people in the fandom has been debating from what I seen if PPG x RRB is technically wrong because of the weak relation with Mojo, borderline incestous. (Which is very hard to consider since the PPG and RRB are made out of a crock pot by 2 different people who also had barely any relation with one another and that the RRB was revived by a devil with a new body.) I seen more of this being the discussion, but barely with the Puffs and Punks out in public. The Powerpunks, are pretty much confirmed to be alternate versions of themselves. But one hand, oddly enough they are different and went through different things, they could be considered as different people or secondary counterparts to the girls. (Also Crock Pot Logic too?) (Probably implied to have different ingredients) On the other hand, it could be seen as selfcest (or for Crack and Clash PPG x PPNKG it be also borderline incestous) Let me be clear I'm not here to diss on any ships, I want genuine, raw answers to have a better understanding of what the people thinks of it all entirely because this is probably a weirder gray area I seen with this ship. Because ngl the more I think about it the more it makes me wanna know what others think. [MAJOR SIDE NOTE, I'm not gonna compare appearances because the same logic was applied to the RRB, when in reality it was meant to mimic like Mickey x Minnie or Donald x Daisy type of thing, Chemical X too because the show has shown Run Of the Mill Girls or Movie starting, as well as Antidote X which removes Chemical X in their system.] What are your guys opinion on Powerpuffs x Powerpunks ships in itself?
That’s a good point! BUT
Not to beat a dead horse, but the whole “PPGs and RRBs are siblings” thing has always felt more like an observational fan theory than an actual confirmed fact. There’s definitely an argument for it, and I understand why some people like the theory (hell I vibe with it✌️), but at the end of the day it depends on whether or not you buy into that interpretation. The show itself never really confirms it.
That reminds me a bit of the whole thing with Kagamine Rin and Len from Vocaloid….
A lot of people see Rin and Len and immediately assume they’re twins because of how similar they look, even though they aren’t canonically siblings. Some people ship them, some people don’t, and both reactions are valid. Even if something isn’t technically incestuous, people can still find it uncomfortable, and that’s their right.
A lot of this comes down to personal preference in character design. Personally, I’ve always found contrasting designs more interesting than matching ones. I’m talking height differences, different color palettes, different silhouettes, different personalities! characters who visually and narratively bounce off each other.
Part of the reason for that is that modern audiences tend to place a much bigger emphasis on visual individuality than older cartoons did. Nowadays, it’s practically a meme that cartoon couples look like siblings because they share the same face shape, body type, or overall design. That’s one reason designs like Mickey and Minnie can look a little strange to modern viewers. They’re products of a different era of animation, where simplifying characters and reusing similar visual language was common practice. It’s less a flaw in the designs themselves and more a byproduct of animation standards from the 192 was and early cartoon era. It was so common place. It never stopped and still standard practice for animators all the way up to the 90s and 2000s.
The Powerpuff Girls and Rowdyruff Boys don’t really have that kind of contrast because they’re intentionally designed as counterparts. For some people, that’s the appeal. For others, it’s exactly why they look elsewhere or end up redesigning the characters from the ground up. There aren’t actually that many options once you get into the whole “they need to be with their own kind” debate, which has always made me a little uncomfortable anyway.
(I know that was a huge tangent, but I thought I would bring it up because I just know someone will mention it in the comment somewhere)
I also see people bring up the fact that the boys were revived by HIM, but I’ve never really found that argument convincing either. HIM didn’t create entirely new characters; he resurrected characters that already existed. They’re still the same Rowdyruff Boys, just brought back after being defeated. Whether that changes how people interpret their connection to the girls is up to them, but I’ve always seen it as a revival rather than the creation of a new set of characters.
As for people shipping the girls with the Powerpunk Girls, I’ve always seen that as falling into the same category as clone ships, alternate universe ships, evil counterpart ships, and all the other weird fandom stuff that have existed forever. It’s basically like that one question you think about while laying in your bed at night of, “If you could clone yourself, would you date them?” It’s not really something I take all that seriously.
I don’t personally ship it, but I also don’t feel nearly as strongly about it as some people do. I can understand why someone looking for a lesbian alternative to other ships might gravitate toward it. There are aspects of the dynamic that people find interesting even if they don’t like the more popular counterpart….
Really, this whole discussion exists in a gray area where people can hide behind what’s technically true while still making others uncomfortable. That’s why I think most of these debates ultimately come down to interpretation rather than objective right or wrong.
At the end of the day, fandom has been shipping alternate versions of characters, clones, counterparts, and mirror-universe doubles or even just literally the character themselves for years. It’s not exactly a new phenomenon. We all remember what happened with the Onceler.
Ahhh alright, you do point out pretty good points, thanks for this insight, for a long while I had been conflicted with the ship itself. While I recalled liking the ship back then, some point in time it sorta click to me they are technically dating alt ver of themselves or alt ver of their siblings? Since I always remember seeing them as counterparts or entirely different ppl back then and did not pay attention to the logic behind it. Which is why I wasn't sure now if I should keep continue liking this ship or not. Im ehhh on it atm only because Im more questioning how to view this now. Especially when I do have some friends pointing that out it made me think deeper?
Like I said, this isn’t something I take all that seriously. To me, it mostly comes down to how you choose to look at it.
If someone sees the Powerpunk Girls as alternate-universe versions of the Powerpuff Girls, then I can understand why they’d find the ship weird. In fact, if the idea of the girls dating another version of themselves or what could be interpreted as an alternate version of their sisters makes you uncomfortable, then congratulations! you now understand how I feel about some of the arguments surrounding the Rowdyruff Boys. A lot of these discussions ultimately come down to perspective…
ANYHOW, I think there’s a bit more gray area with the Powerpunk Girls because they’re from another dimension and are generally treated as distinct characters with their own identities. Whether that’s enough separation is up to the individual viewer, but I can at least understand the reasoning….
Ironically, the more you try to logically defend or argue for these kinds of ships, the stranger the conversation tends to become. You can argue that dating another version of yourself is weird. You can argue that they’re technically different people. You can argue that they’re counterparts rather than the same character! The deeper you dig and the more you think about it, the more complicated and convoluted the logic becomes….
It’s honestly similar to the whole thing surrounding Loki and Sylvie. The moment you start applying strict rules to alternate universes, timelines, counterparts, and variants, you end up creating entirely new questions that are even weirder than the original one you started with….
At a certain point, it becomes a damned-if-you-do, damned-if-you-don’t situation. You can make an argument against it, you can make an argument for it, and both sides usually end up running into strange implications the more you ramble on.
Sometimes it’s best not to think about it too deeply….. 😵💫
