Details: Waves Breaking, c. 1860, by Gustave Courbet. Oil on panel.
This is not a bar of soap, but in fact a toad. The New Mexico spadefoot toad [Spea multiplicata] is an absolutely tiny specimen of a frog, averaging out at about 1.5 to 2 inches long. Although they are their own species, this toad has been known to accidentally hybridize with western and plains spadefoots on occasion. Image by Sarah Beckwith.
