zakki:re translations Part 1 (pg. 10-29, Vol. 1-2 illustrations)
Hello and welcome to the zakki:re translations post! It took a bit of time to think about how I’d have to structure these translations, but I’ve figured it out for the most part.
What this series of posts will be is a text translation of Ishida’s comments accompanied by the art he’s referring to (the actual art itself that’s been available online, not a picture taken from zakki:re. It’ll make more sense once you start going through the post, I promise). It will also include some commentary from me for some additional context, which will be marked as “T/N” for “translator notes”.
What this will NOT include are photographs of the book. If I take pictures of the book, they will be contained in a different post since I don’t want the translations posts to be more cluttered than they already are. I also won’t include any illustrations that don’t have commentary attached to them unless they’re somehow relevant to it.
They will be posted every 1-2 days depending on my schedule, and have roughly 10 pieces of commentary each which I found was a good length.
And lastly, some terminology before I begin. TG = Tokyo Ghoul (overall, like the fandom tag), OG = the first Tokyo Ghoul series, :re = Tokyo Ghoul:re.

“Bienvenue à l'Académie de Magie Beauxbâtons!”
The loud voice of Madame Maxime echoes the whole room. Leiretta, as well as other first-years, is walking down the aisle in the middle of the Hall. The enormous room enchanted with soft colors and butterfly-shaped sparkling decorations make their face lighted up in surprise, excitement and even some fear. It is unblamable, almost every eleven-year-olds have never seen such a magnificent scenario in their entire life.
“Before you join other students in our opening feast, the first-years will be sorted into one of three houses:
Pappilonlisse, searching for who is kind, artistic, mature and idealistic.
Bellefeuille, the house of great bravery, sensitivity, loyalty and love of nature.
Ombrelune, where you’ll find cunning, logic, ambition and curiosity suits you best.
In order to get sorted, you have to shoot an arrow with your name engraved in it across the room. After a few seconds it will burst into your house color: Green for Bellefeuille; purple for Pappilonlisse and navy for Ombrelune.”
A bow set is placed in the center of the Hall. Suddenly the atmosphere becomes so quiet, only hear the gasp of some nervous students.
Madam Maxime breaks the ice: “We shall start before the night sets in and you gonna go to sleep with an empty stomach. Please go ahead,
Mademoiselle Aurélie Dumont!”
The quiet room a few minutes ago is replaced with the cheering and clapping sound of Pappilonlisse when the purple sparkles burst out in the air. Other new students also get more excited, waiting for their names to be called.
“Next, please! Monsieur…
…
Mademoiselle…
…”
In the middle of the crowd, Leiretta, contrary to everyone, seems to kinda lose interest. That’s actually true. She agrees that her surroundings right now is wonderful, but it feels like nothing can stay in her mind for more than a second. She isn’t even following the ceremony.
Leiretta spent the whole summer preparing to attend Hogwarts. She heard her deceased father tell a lot about his old school and how his childhood passed by with imprinted memories. Her paternal family kept telling her why Hogwarts is the best school for wizards and witches all the time. She just can’t understand why her mother - a Bellefeuille alumni - decided to bring her here, knowing how eager she was to go to Hogwarts.
“You just biased this school because you studied here, mom. I never gonna like this place, Hogwarts is certainly better than this silly French thing.” She thinks.
Cutting off her train of thought, the loud voice of the Headmistress makes her startled:
“Mademoiselle Leiretta Shanor!”
Leiretta steps forward. Looking around, everyone is watching her. She’s standing right where her mother did and raised her bow with great pride twenty-one years ago.
She lifts the bow up, sets the arrow, wondering why everyone seems so nervous for this meaningless thing. She just wanna finish soon and get some rest.
“Veeshhh” The arrow soars in the air.
One, two, three seconds… Nothing happened.
The arrow started to go down. Still nothing.
“So that’s it. This whole ridiculous thing is just wasting my time.” She thinks. But why does it feel like she has missed a heartbeat? “No way. Maybe I’m too hungry so my mind is imagining things. So crazy.”
The Hall went quiet again. The arrow is about to touch the ground. No one has seen this case before, at least in recent years.
“I told you mom. Clearly I don’t belong here. You see it now?” Ignoring the heartbeat getting more and more wildly, she’s pleased to prove her mom was wrong.
But then - beyond her expectation – right the second the arrow is down to floor, the dust that it is dissolving into suddenly turns into navy, like a firework exploding.
So bright.
So bright that the shine remains in her eyes. Not until Madam Maxime exclaims “Ombrelune!” did she regain her senses. The crowd cheers heartily, she can hear some are congratulating her for the new “home”.
She didn’t realize since when a single tear was rolling down her cheek. She didn’t realize how relieved she was to see the navy sparkles.
She walks towards the Ombrelune dining tables unconsciously. She can’t tell whether she’s feeling empty, or so full with chaotic mixed emotions. But she knows, the moment the navy lights burst out, she can understand why her mother was so proud of being a student here. Deep down she knows that this is her home. That from the beginning, she belongs here.
And that’s how Leiretta’s journey, at Beauxbatons, begins.

✢ New students entering the school, after classes, will be brought home safely by very cute vehicles, which are large-sized petrels before they turn 11 years old.~~
“Isn’t it good, Kiel? We can enjoy this adventure for the farthest of all the students!” Hillary says enthusiastically.
It has been a week since Akiel Kawaguchi, as well as every seven-year-old wizards and witches living in Japan, started learning his first lesson at Mahoutokoro School of Magic. As school tradition, before officially boarding at their elevens, these young wixes are flown back and forth to their homes every day on the backs of a flock of giant storm petrels.
Akiel, together with Hillary and two other senior students, are always the last ones to get off their petrel. Naturally, they quickly became friends. None of them has ever felt tired of the long distance from the new school to their home, because, as Hillary said, the adventure can be described as enjoyable, except for the fact that it’s quite modest to say so. The petrel’s plumage is so soft as the finest velvet. The clouds surrounded look like giant cotton candies floating. The sun at its last hours of a day takes their breath away everytime. Anyone would agree that this adventure is beyond spectacular, but having a chance to truly experience it is one of the privileges of Mahoutokoro students.
Of course, Akiel loves this daily journey to every single minute. But if asked, that’s not the best part. Actually, he never thought he would ever have friends. The boy had always been isolated by his peers due to his strange hybrid features. But the girl who is now sitting next to him, Hillary, has always been so nice to him from the last day they met, not to mention Zephyrus and Leiretta ‘senpai’, all of them don’t discriminate or hesitate to play with him. He hasn’t felt so blessed for a long time.
“Look like our boy’s head is in the clouds?”
“Literally and figuratively.”- Leiretta continues Zephyrus.
“Well well, the young…” The older kids giggle. Maybe one more year of experience got them the better ability to hide their overwhelming faces before this scenario. But of course, teasing their little friend a bit couldn’t hurt.
“You are only one year older than us, Zephyr!” Hillary replies at once. “Ignore them Kiel, look at that cloud! It looks like a Kneazle, doesn’t it?”
“And that one’s a Knarl!”
They laugh together, the most carefree laughters one has in their life. Although having seen quite many times, Akiel is always impressed with this girl’s smile. Hillary’s smile is as bright as the sun far over there. He doesn’t know why, but seeing this face of Hilly makes him happy, maybe as if he were eating Chocolate Frog, or as the Charms professor was complimenting his performance this morning. No, maybe even happier. Then Hillary must be the one with the most beautiful smile, or she is such a great witch that her smile is enchanted too, he thinks so.
“You say, did they forget the elderly here, Zeph?” - Leiretta’s voice from the behind.
“I already told you, the young these days…”
“Zephyr, you idiot!!” - Hillary turns around.
Just like that, these wizarding children's day-ends are always filled with laughter. No one knows what the future holds, but one sure thing is, these days will be imprinted on their minds as one of the most beautiful parts of their school years~~
