Cora closed her eyes and took a deep breath, leaning against her bedroom's window she let the cold December wind caress her face. She looked at her neighbours' houses all lit up, full of life, families and groups of friends coming together to celebrate New Year's Eve. From her house she could see the sea in the distance moving in the calm of the night. Everything around her seemed to say "Hey, I know you've been through a lot these past few years. But now everything is calm, everything is fine, you see? Enjoy this peace, relax like you've never done before".
So that was what she did. She was so calm that she did not notice that her family and a handful of good friends downstairs had been waiting for her return for several minutes. Nor did she notice that Tristan, concerned about her tardiness, had come to look for her and was now standing behind her, not daring to speak fearing that he would break the peaceful atmosphere that surrounded his wife. After a few minutes of watching her, he finally decided to approarch. He stood at her side of the open window and hugged her , catching Coraline unawares.
-Lin-lin, what are you thinking about? - he whispered to her ear, pulling her out of her trance.
-Nothing, important- she answered quietly smiling at him.
-if it wasn't important, you wouldn't be like this- he added with a grin, he knew the woman he had married too well to believe what she was saying.
-I don’t know, Tristan. Just watching all this made me realize something- she confessed- I am truly happy.
-What do you mean?- he didn’t understand what she meaned
-I am just happy- she tried to find better words to explain it- For a long time, I thought I would never feel like this because I didn’t deserve. I never thought I will find people who will understand me at all, friends to care about and I didn’t feel worthy to be loved by anyone. But now I have you, I have all our friends and I just have realized that I have all that I thought I would never deserve- a few happiness tears escaped from her eyes- I am so happy about it, Tristan.
-Oh, Lin-lin. Come here- he opened his arms to give her a long hug - It has been a good year, hasn’t it?
-Yeah, it has been a good year. The best of all- Cora said wiping away her tears with her sleeve
- And there are still a lot of good ones yet to come- Tristan assured her looking at the sky
I couldn’t find the words to express it, so I let my characters do it for me. This last two years have been the best and happiest of all my life for now. During this time, I learned a lot of knew things about the world around me, became more confident and prouder of who I am as a person, and last but not least, I met my three best friends irl. Growing up I wasn’t used to having true friends, so they meant the world to me. But I think they don’t know how much they had helped me since I met them, so I want to tell them that they had made me a better person and (I hope this doesn’t sound weird 😅) I love them with all my heart for it.
Actually, two of them were the ones who convinced me to join this crazy and lovely site. Then I started posting and I didn’t imagine how many wonderful people I will find through Tumblr. It’s true that I joined this place last June, but when I started talking with some of you it felt like I had known you for years. I am not the best socializing irl, neither I knew much of how to talk with people on social media, so I was incredible awkward when I started. But you all made me fell welcomed and now, I am proud to consider you good friends apart of mutuals. If my irl friends have helped me to improve as person, you also had your part here and all your sweet words made me feel a lot more confident about my writing skills (which I thought to be horrible at that moment) I love you all too and I wish I could give you a long hug. But since screens are separating us, here is a virtual one 🫂
Now the year comes to end, and I can assure that it has been the best one of life thanks to all of you. All that I have to add is that I am so thankful for this for still being here and having the opportunity to meet all of you. So, I hope you all have a wonderful New Year’s Eve and as Tristan said that there a lot of good years yet to come for you.

Plot: Although Coraline says that it is not necessary, the gang decides to organize a party for her birthday. But thanks to the fire whiskey, most of the group end drunk by the end of the night. This leaves Cora and Tristan having to take care of all of them until next morning. As a well-timed mistletoe appears over them, which makes the Lestrange boy finally confirm his feeling for his best friends
Writer's note: Hi everyone! Since today is Coraline's birthday (mine too because we shared it) I decided to write this little fic to finally talk about Cora's eighteen birthday. Which was a little bit messy but she always remembers it like one of her favoutite ones. Hope you like it 💜
Coraline never thought she would be celebrating her eighteenth birthday taking care of her friends after they had gotten drunk. But even if it wasn't her ideal plan, she found herself carrying water, blankets and cushions with Tristan. Trying to help the rest of their group to fall sleep.
It was the twenty-second of December and the next day many of the teenagers would be catching the train to spend the rest of the Christmas holidays with their families. So, they had two reason to reunite, celebrate Cora's birthday and gather for their own Christmas. All together like a little family. Since the previous year, The Khanna's circle had been using a classroom for their meetings. This particular room was on the second to last floor, it was quite cosy and hadn't been used since Jacob had studied at Hogwarts. So, when they decided to organise a party behind the teachers' backs, it seemed like the ideal place.
At first Coraline had insisted that there was no need to celebrate her birthday. As a child she had only enjoyed a few of these special days with her parents and older brother. She hadn't had any friends until she got to Hogwarts, she was used to being the outcast and spending time alone. So, apart from Neil, she had no friends to invite. Due to this she was used to never make a big deal about celebrating her own birthday. However, it all changed when she arrived to the magic school. During her first year Rowan, Penny and Ben had managed to throw a little party in the artifacts room and since then it had become kind of an habit for the group and more and more friends joining them each year.
But that would be the first birthday she would spend without Rowan and the second without her grandmother. And as she had told to Neil some weeks before, she wasn't in the mood to party. Besides "what is the point of having a birthday if the people you love the most aren't there?" It was she constantly repeated to herself the previous days. But her friends weren't going to be so easily persuaded.
Moni,Joslyn Penny, Ben, Neil, Chiara and Tristan had been decorating the classroom with Christmas lights, mistletoe and tinsel for a whole week. Tonks, Josh and Charlie had kept her busy asking her to help them to study for the N.E.W.T.S in order, she wouldn't notice anything in the meantime. And Jae and Tulip had been in charge of the food and drink. So, Cora didn't know what was going on until her little brother asked her to come with him to the classroom because he had something important to talk about with her. With all that plan she didn't discover the surprise until she entered to the room, and everyone started hugging her. The evening had started well, quite calmly. It was a nice winter evening with friends. They had given her some presents, sung Christmas carols together, told anecdotes from other years, drank hot chocolate... But a few hours later after the younger ones, Neil, Beatrice and Cedric, had to go to their rooms (by order of Penny and Coraline who were playing their role as older sisters), the trouble started.
As I said Jae and Tulip were in charge of the drinks, and of course this pair of troublemakers came up with the brilliant idea of taking two bottles of fire whiskey along with the eggnog. They encouraged the rest of the group to try it for their first time. Tristan and Cora refused to drink on the grounds that someone had to be in their five senses to stop them if they started to do something crazy. Penny, Moni, Joslyn and Chiara also said no at first but gave in after a while. And as they weren't used to drink, they couldn't take any more and fell asleep after two glasses. With one more drink Tonks, Jae, Joshua and Tulip (ironically the ones who had insisted the most on playing) had to sit because everything was spinning around. Barnaby, Charlie, Talbott and Ben managed to have a couple more but after that they ended up singing Jingle Bells rock at full volume and then had to lie down because they were totally dizzy.
Well, the thing is, now there wasn't any whisky left. And Tristan and Coraline, as the only responsible and sober ones, had to look after everyone. Cora put a reddish blanket over Josh and Charlie, who were laying above some cushions near the fireplace. The young witch was grateful that Chiara had decided to bring a good assortment of cushions and blankets from their bedrooms so that they could sit down.
-Tonks, if you throw up on me, I'll never speak to you again- she heard Tristan joking from where her friend was lying with kind of a sick face
-Don't worry, Tris. There's no danger- the metamorphmagus had a silly smile on her lips and could barely put the words together.
-Sure. Come on, drink this. You'll thank me in the morning- he knelt down to offer her a glass of water he had just conjured up with his wand. After the witch nodded and took the drink, she lied again on the floor in an improvised bed.
They had decided that the best they could do is sleeping all together in the classroom (as it would have been really complicated to take all of them to the dorms considering the state they were). Then, in the morning, Coraline and him would wake up everyone before eleven so they could take the train to their homes. Tristan went to Cora and they both sat on cushions contemplating the fire they stayed like that for a couple of minutes since they were too tired to say a word.
-Tonks was the last one, everyone else is already asleep- the girl explained with relief.
-I'm sorry your party ended like this, Lin- the boy apologised and gave her a friendly hug behind her shoulders.
-Don't worry, it was fine. And they had a great time at the end- she tried to joke, but the sad smile in her face gave her away.
-Well, what's it like to turn eighteen? - he noticed her sadness and tried to change the topic.
Coraline lost in her own thoughts while looking for an answer. Her eyes stared at the flames of the fired while memories from better and more calm years travelled in her mind. Her parents singing Spanish and Italian lullabies to her, decorating the tree with Jacob, baking with Neil and Isadora, going to Hogsmade with Rowan and Ben to buy presents, dancing in the winter ball with Tristan... If she just could go back change everything that had gone wrong in the last years
-I don't know Tristan- she finally answered - I thought that by now I would have all my life planned out, that everything would be sorted out and that I would still have everyone by my side. I don't know I used to think than when I get older I would be able to fix all the things I had messed up Now it feels like that every year everything stays the same or just gets worse- a single tear escaped from her eyes but she rapidly wiped it out because she doesn't want to worry her friend.
-Lin, don't say that- he hugged her tighter to try to cheer her up- Things are getting better little by little, even if you don't realize it. And you have us by your side for whatever you need. You will never get rid of me, do you hear me?- he smiled, her friend’s head still laying on the space between his head and his shoulder.
-What would I do without you?- Cora laughed while leaving the hug feeling a lot better.
-You'd probably have to deal with these idiots on your own- he joked, while finally standing up. Then he offered his hand to her so she could do so.
Coraline took his hands and when they were both standing, she noticed a small branch hanging from the ceiling just above them. Her first reaction was to blush as red as Rudolph’s nose. She didn’t even notice that she was still holding his friend’s hands.
-Tristan, the mistletoe is…- she couldn’t finish the sentence.
She thought that the situation was too awkward and that if they kissed right there their friendship would change forever. She started to overthink, what if she was bad at it? How was it supposed to work? She had no experience at all, on the other hand Tristan was quite popular between the girls, he had kissed more than one of them and he had even gone to a couple of dates (none of them being really serious)
The other problem is that, secretly, Coraline was a huge romantic on the bottom of her heart, she wanted to keep her first kiss for someone she truly loved. Apart of his best friend Tristan was also her first crush during their first three years at Hogwarts. Yes, she had imagined what it would be like to kiss him but that was years ago. Of course, Tristan was kind, brave, intelligent, caring… just how she imagined her ideal partner. They always cared and comforted each other and maybe sometimes she felt way too comfortable and had some butterflies while hugging him. And when she thought about her future, she always imagined him by her side. But that was a totally normal thing between best friends, right? Unconsciously her hands (which were still linked with Tristan’s) started sweating.
-Well, tradition is tradition- he rubbed her hands so she could calm down. Little she knew he was as nervous as her- Of course you can say no, but would you mind if…?
Tristan couldn’t finish his sentence either, but Cora closed her eyes and offered his left cheek without thinking more about it. It wasn't exactly what the boy expected, but his face still got closer to her with his eyes also closed. It was brief, yet sweet and cute. When it finished, they smiled to each other, and Cora let go his hands at the sudden realization she had been holding them for so long.
Maybe Tristan was thinking about a true “true” first kiss, but still it was beautiful for him. His feelings for the Wytte girl had become stronger since their fifth year, he had been waiting for years to confess his love, but he never found the right moment. He didn’t want to push Cora to do something she didn’t want to, he loved and respected her to much for that. He was ready to wait whatever it took her to be ready for his confession. And in case that day never arrived, or he was rejected in the end he would love to keep her as a good friend.
-Happy Birthday Lin- he hugged her again- And Merry Christmas too.
That night the confirmation of their feelings arrived to the young students hearts.Months later when they had they truly first kiss together Tristan realized that the blush in Cora’s cheeks was still the same as in that day. And many more years before when they had their last child, he nearly cried when he discovered that the little May had inherited his mother’s blush. The blush than even when they got married, he loved to see each time he kissed his wife.

In the context of 18th century, this is a fictional story created by me, Leiretta and my partner Hillary (@hillarydevillier), about the lives of some aristocratic families. All characters included belongs to mentioned authors.
The title is inspired by an idiom, "All that glitters is not gold". The reason for this idea will be transmitted throughout the story.

Part 1: Introduction
I: The Villier
1874. A dramatic year of British aristocrats. The most highlighted, tragic event was…
Villier, with the title Duke passed down to generations, was an infamous family. Maverick, the latest man holding the title, was among the worst contributing to that reputation. In 1960, he suddenly killed himself, leaving the whole family to his only son, Yacine. Some say that he couldn’t get over the death of his wife 1 year ago, others say he just disclaimed his responsibility after squandering too much money on betting and gambling. But like many other stories of the elite, they can only make their wild guesses, no one really knows what happened to others.
Unlike his father, Yacine proved himself a reliable head of the family, who restored its name as an influential clan. It seemed as if the Villiers turned to a brand new happy page after his wedding with a French lady, Elfleda d’Aureville and got twin girls and a boy. But once again, “Duke Villier” became the top topic of the aristocrats to chatter about.
February 24th 1874, The Duke and Duchess Villier got into an accident at the side of the forest near their mansion.
In the same day, every servants got reported to be murdered by bandits. One of the twins, Allenia, went missing. The other two kids, Priscia and Diamandis later were found, and soon were picked up by d’Aureville to France.
II: The Varford
The name Varford, has been clinging to the image of a noble, respectable family for as long as 3 generations up to now. Looking from outside, Varford is a model family anyone would dream to be born in.
The previous Marquess, the head of Varford family, used to be known to have two brilliant children, the current Lord Mathias and young Lady Monetta, who was born only half a month before her father’s accident, leading to his death.
But the truth is, this honorable family is hiding an enormous secret. There were… two “Lady Monetta”, a crooked twin.
III: The Castelli
The Castelli received more than a mourning this year. Undeniably, the shocking event early this year had a terrible impact on Lady Charlotte, whose maiden name was Villier, the first-born of the late Duke.
Let’s skip this sorrow phase, just for now. Later that year, when the last autumn breezes blew over the country, Castelli's servants were in a state of flux again with the affair of the ill-fated Artus and his wife, who has worked for Lord Hector ever since beginning, left behind their only one-year-old girl. Obviously, none of them could afford to raise the kid. Nevertheless, they also didn't want to report this to the milady, because she was obviously too traumatized to receive any more negative news. But how could such a big issue be missed?
Contrary to what the servants think, when Lady Castelli saw the sleeping baby in the handmaid's arms, she gave such a soft, peaceful smile that they had not seen in a long time. As she said, the girl was undoubtedly a God’s blessing, given to her in those dark moments.
And that’s how Annette became a part of Castelli family.

The kids don't want to worry their busy mom, so they basically tell nothing about the Cursed Vaults.
When she learned her kids violated the school rules for hunting the vaults, she felt left out but couldn't blame them because she knew she had been mostly absent from their lives.
The sense of guilt made her not dare to ask Joslyn about the vaults, so she tried her own way to gather information to find Jacob, but as a squib alone she couldn't do much.
With Chiara Lobosca's new look I've been thinking about drawing her, but I don't have the slightest idea how to draw her, so I just have this sketch :b
I'll try to practice the Hogwarts Mystery characters more.
