Interest check.

So I was thinking maybe something along the lines of a Solarpunk fashion week.

Probably around the same time as Paris Fashion week with it not being too close to solarpunk aesthetic week and it being around the same time as Paris one I think would just fit for showing a more sustainable side to fashion.

Basically showing off clothes/accessories that are:

Handmade (whether by yourself, bought or comissioned)

Second hand

Repaired

Altered

Held onto and used for years

I've meant to put togther outfits for both solarpunk aesthetic weeks and forgot but if it's a week for it I'm more likely to remember.

I know personally I've got several outfits that are fully secondhand and don't even realise that the full thing is at times.

I think it'd be a fun way to help show the sustainable side of fashion and also anything you've made or repaired yourself and haven't had the chance to show off.

Forgot to mention when I came up with this I was also thinking if you didn't want to share pictures of yourself you could just share the clothes itself or if you don't have some but have sketches or even just describe ideas it'd be some more accessible options.

Solarpunk Fashion Week is actually something we organised on this blog before, way back in 2018! I (the blog mod) got busier after that and didn't organise any more, but would be interested in e.g. collaborating on it on this blog again if that's something you'd be interested in. Tumblr does still do shared side blogs, yes? I'm thinking that this blog has the most straightforward blog name for it if that's desired.

A week for planting, building, fixing, creating, sharing, and spreading awareness of the solarpunk movement! Coming Spring 2019, exact dates TBA (currently leaning towards late March)

I’m looking for another mod or two to help me run this, so lmk if you’re interested! I’ll also be making a Matrix chat and sharing resources as we get closer to Spring

A small ring for Solarpunk Fashion Week. This ring was made using the last of my pleather scraps bought secondhand and salvaged from clothing. It’s like a tiny reminder for myself to try not to let anything go to waste.

My contribution for @solarpunkfashionweek is this practical farming outfit which has been crafted by me essentially from industrial waste! The over dress is made from upholstery wool that I got for free from a friend of my mother who is an interior designer. It was left over from a job and each client orders new fabric by the bolt so she had no use for it. The under dress was made from a sheet from the retreat centre I work at which had been stored badly and so had a few mould spots on it.

Each piece was sewn by me. I also drafted the pattern for the wool dress, which features fitted darts, an underarm zip, and a side pocket; but the under dress did not require a pattern as it was made with rectangles of fabric shaped with a gathered elasticated waist and elasticated cuffs. An incredibly easy construction that I will be using again. Boots are Doc Martens originals bought 2nd hand from Oxfam 4 years ago.

I wanted something warm, breathable, easy to layer, and with a pocket for my phone. This outfit ticks all of the boxes.

The top and skirt are both newly traded! I regularly attend a local Trans/NB clothing swap which is now where I get most of my clothes.

The shoes were thrifted as was the necklace.

It was super dark here today, so the photo came off a bit fuzzy. Anyway here’s my @solarpunkfashionweek contribution. The kilt/skirt has elements of both kilts and ancient Mediterranean men’s clothing. Not pictured is the single, giant box pleat in the back. I realize that actual kilts have more pleats, but there wasn’t enough fabric for that and I felt like being adventurous. It’s probably more of a skirt if you’re being technical.

I’m wearing basically the same outfit today. The dress is a hand-me-down from my step-grandma, one her mom made her when she was around my age, and one of my favourites!
