ARTIST PROFILE: 

Harvey Mann is a 22 year old artist from Salisbury who comes from an artistic family. He’s finally studying his true calling which is Fine Art, after being sidetracked by Sport and Fitness. His practice predominantly looks at photography and collage based media with some drawing thrown in to. He appropriates billboards through photographs and re-imagines their messages to reflect his own philosophies, doing this so as to reclaim the streets from corporate dominance.

He finds it hard to place himself in a single genre as his work changes so rapidly, however he touches upon subjects such as consumerism and advertising with the intention of subverting public space to involve a wider variety of messages not just those of advertising.

Three key influences in his work are Barbara Kruger, Jenny Holzer and the “Brandalism” initiative. “Brandalism” for its proactive approach to reclaiming public space from advertising. Kruger for her use of found images and Holzer for her use of public space.

Lastly, Mann wants to emphasize how his work is about being in the public, visual realm and domain therefore for his exhibition piece he will be wheat-pasting his collages to the outside of a container for the exhibition.

New work by Gullu Kandrou in the run-up to the uncontained 2017 show.

Gullu Kandrou is queer, disabled, young woman of colour who creates work about sexism, ableism and racism. Her practice encompasses many mediums and techniques however the core issues always remain the same. She comes from a life painting background and has experience with etching, sculpture and painting within this year alone. This year she has somewhat moved away from the core issues and focused on what happens when love comes apart because there is a lack of communication and it becomes about either reestablishing new lines of re-communication or allowing that to go. She is influenced by artists such Tracey Emin, for her style of confessional love messages, Frida Kahlo, for her confessional nature and disability acceptance and Louise Bourgeois for her forthcomingness. 
Miss Kandrou also does work relating to her disabilities which takes a completely different form, this work won’t be shown in the upcoming exhibition but can be seen over on her blog if you are interested.

ARTIST PROFILE:

Tina Nicholls work is based on the dichotomy of the treasured and cherished, opposed to what is discarded. In her exhibition piece, Nicholls spent ten months collecting coloured plastic from two Isle of Wight beaches. These items were then separated into their respective colour categories.

Outside of her exhibition work, Nicholls work is predominantly textile based, and she enjoys making her own felt from scratch. She describes the physically engaging process as “wonderfully serendipitous” in its outcome. Nicholls enjoys the unveiling of the final piece, which even she does not know how it will turn out. Her work is tactile, colourful and contains echoes of her personal life which embellish her practice.

ARTIST PROFILE:

Mandy Smith is a Southampton based artist whose body of work encompasses a variety of mediums, including drawing, printing, needlework and sculpture. Her work emerges from experiences of the maternal; examining details of the past and details of the motherly relationship, both between herself and her mother, and herself and her children. Smith combines elements of different memories, distorting the past, conveying feeling through a patchwork of different elements.

Smith has a love of learning new processes, mixing this desire with the content of her work, creating an enriching practice. She is heavily influenced by female artists such as Louise Bourgeois, Annette Message and Sarah Lucas.

Smith’s choice of materials are modest, clothing and stuffed toys are sourced from the domestic setting, reworked by the artist to an unsettling effect. Through intervention in scale or material quality, Smith navigates a space between the body and the monstrous. At first glance this may be interpreted as humorous, bordering on the theatrical, as the dismembering of soft toys in Bonkers takes the childish qualities of the toy away to create a darker, shadowy ‘otherness’; inspired by the wrenching realisation that her own daughter was becoming an independent woman. This coupled with her daughter’s growing interest in makeup and social media left her feeling uneasy and worried; feelings which she took out on the once beloved soft toys creating the “monster” which became Bonkers. Kat Hutchings is a Southampton based artist whose work explores themes of identity and the mind through photography, sculpture and performance. In 2016 her installation which took the form of a “hat” was featured in the Solent Fine Art Midyear Show.

Her current practice utilises photographs that she has captured using a Nikon film camera; creating installation pieces and interactive, immersive sculptures through the pieces. Although currently working on these pieces she doesn’t identify with a single genre as her practice is so fluid and constantly evolving.

Hutchings’ work is based on the exploration of the self, and she has therefore researched the theoretical writings on identity by Jacques Derrida and Eckhart Tolle’s book The Power of Now. This has enabled her to overcome her anxiety to an extent and is a perfect example of practice feeding positively into everyday life. A further inspiration to her is Marina Abramović who demonstrates the power of performance art and highlights the importance of accessibility and interactivity with her audience, which Hutchings’ strives to accomplish in her own work.

ARTIST PROFILE: Fallon McCoy is a twenty-two year old artist, living and working in Southampton, who has always been passionate about the arts; first beginning her artistic career in Special Effects then moving over to Fine Art as she felt it was a more open specialisation. She enjoys Fine Art as it allows her to explore all artistic aspects not just film based media, and especially loves model-making and the process of bringing to life drawings. 

 Three key influences in her work are Alex Pardee, Ron Mueck and Joe McNally. Pardee’s work is really colourful and surreal, pushing boundaries. This notion of boundary-pushing applies to her own work, not in a visual sense, but in the creative freedom and ideas which fuel her practice. Mueck’s work consists of hyper-realistic sculptures, which inspire her attention to detail, as she acknowledges it is often this small detail which can have a lasting effect on an individual. McNally captures real moments that feel genuine, in particular his “Faces in Ground Zero” series, which document the people who were on the ground in 9/11. The profoundness which came from a single photo spoke to her and inspired her own imagination and photography.
