I’m not fond of many of the attitudes of much of modern World of Darkness
I’ve sat here typing a retyping my thoughts on the subject a lot, because they always wind up very TL;DR and ranty.
Suffice to say, the tl;dr version is: I hate the hypocrisy, I hate how they unironically treat European myths and Judeo-Christianity as fair game for fiction and fantasy because, “none of that is real,” while they toe the line of their academic masters and consider anything Native American, African or Asian completely off the table for use in modern worldly games about folklore.
Many of them don’t even seem to like horror or urban fantasy, it’s about grudge-writing the material just so you have to interact and acknowledge they/them characters and punch a Nazi wearing a gamergator shirt in the face while they babble some misogynistic bullshit lines. WoD to some of them is just a way for the house to pay fools that are in their union a sum just to give them a job and credentials before moving them on to somewhere else in entertainment with a padded resume.
World of Darkness has always had a far-leftist angle. This is not new. But the sheer amount that the no-fun zone has expanded to just be a platform for a person with an entire ham for a hand to start swinging it and not just decry behavior but demand certain lipservice to shit or canonizing radical social theories as real modus operandi for company conduct just, sucks.
In the 90s I groaned to my soul about fucking Gypsies having their own game supplement. Because, just no dude. They defended that sort of thing because they weren’t playing the real ethnic group, they were playing the Hollywood novelty folklore pop culture idea of the Gypsy, so it was okay. No, that was never okay. It was a bad idea. A terrible idea.
But what’s happening now is just such an overcorrection that it stifles fun.
It’s enough that I’m pondering about making my own game, just to control the tone and set the culture and norms, and make them sufficiently different to World of Darkness to re-allow the fun and cheesiness of the 90s, without the unintentional faux passses or… making ethnic groups into playable races/classes/templates with their own supernatural stats. pfthehehe.
